Posted: July 1, 2009

since when is dlc free? this is obviously a new game and who cares how long it them if they pull it off then they pull it off and create another kick ass game. l4d was a great game for kids who arent that good at gaming but still want to. i played this with my girlfriend and bless her heart she isnt a pro gamer by any standard but she stood her ground and by now could give me a run for my money. this game gave me countless hours of fun and am hoping l4d2 brings the same enjoyment

Im all for valve making me pay $50 for this game, it looks like the game left 4 dead was supposed to be in the first place. New maps that are not pitch black, a ton of new weapons, ammo mods, new engine, cole - errr - coach, what doesn't this game have. If they come out with the map modding software soon after launch, that would just be the icing on the cake. Sure they might be leaving left 4 dead alone, but let's face it, it isn't the best game out there multiplayer wise. I for one can't wait for valve's new offering into the l4d series, and maybe if this one is a winner, they might turn it loose for the long term updates like valve usually does. Maybe they are making l4d2 so soon after l4d because of all the bad things people said about the original. New maps would only be fun for about a week, then people would whine and complain some more. This way, valve can pretty much start over and make a much deeper and more fun game that can be enjoyed for far longer than the original ever could. All we can ask for now is a horde mode and a sentry gun! (Zombie sappin' mah pills?)

I agree that it shouldn't be free, but to take everything they promised to do for the 1st L4D and then bundle it all into a neat little $50 package is shenz.

They have lied time and time again about L4D1 and the support it was to get.

VALVe has yet to prove this is a new game worth the "Massive" $50 price tag. We have seen a few videos and pictures and that's it. I think if they release a demo, it may cause some to change their minds. I mean a real demo too, one that is free for everyone.

Here's the "new" stuff we've seen so far:
    - Four new characters
    - Upgraded AI system
    - New infected
    - Melee Weapons
    - New maps
    - New environments
    - New special infected

5 of the 7 above could have easily been done through DLC as we are already seeing it being done with custom content from the community. The melee weapons is most likely already a mod in progress and will feature melee weapons we actually want. The new AI system is the only thing I see that is new and ground breaking.

Should we pay for it?I think if they are going to charge for it they should leave it around $25 - $30. At that price there wouldn't be so many people pissed off. The problem is within the "speculated" $50 price tag and the lack of content released for the original game. Not everyone is made of money and we know there are people who will buy anything with VALVes name on it, but it doesn't make it right to charge a premium price for something that's seems like a mod/DLC.

Speaking that i have a ps3 i would really like this game coming my way, but it looks to be more polished then what the first was so power to valve i guess the points of it being soon for a full fledged sequel to a game that is pure set piece it seems i don't know why this isn't just an expansion or dlc of some kind or have some way of moving hand combat to the original.

I think that everyone wouldn't be so mad if they just released some more dlc for the original.

Considering valve would of started developing L4D2 as L4D was released it's a bit of a kick in the teeth as valve obviously from the start had no plans to significantly support L4D and considering it was a game lacking in content and was still released as a full priced game I can only hope that they don't make the same mistake this time with L4D2 and give us a game worthy of it's price tag as well as some support later down the track.I would hate to think that L4D3 is on the way as soon as L4D2 is released.

Firstly, why is there so much hostility towards the L4D boycott on G4TV? "Sess-Dawg," was whining and bitching about people making a boycott, saying gamers have no sense of entitlement when it comes to purchasing games... This is where I beg to differ, if it wasn't for the gamers... who purchase games... there would be no game developers... for that matter, Sessler would be out of a job,. How he can be so blind to this is absurd. Given this economic climate, when you pay $50 for a game (even more outside of the USA), and they make certain promises about that game, and have not only yet to fulfill those promises, but go ahead making another stand alone sequel, it is upsetting.

Thanks for the slander calling us a, "nerd rage group," as that colorfully dressed man to the right stutters over it. What is this Fox News? Maybe if we call them a nerd rager group no one will take them seriously instead of actually investigating what they are angry about!

---"Perhaps Valve made some broad promises, that they feel haven't been fulfilled." -Guy on right supposedly defending us...

    quotes from....
    http://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=SQWylFmqnwM

"Post launch we will definitely be supporting this game with DLC on both the PC and the XBOX360, uhm, similar to what we've done with TF2 with shipping new missions, new weapons, new achievements, and new characters."

"I think the thing that makes the most sense in this one are the mini campaigns... I think probably most likely we will see a new campaign, maybe some new weapons, maybe some new monsters to go with that campaign."

"We're going to keep supporting games, like all Valve multiplayer games, we'll keep supporting it, we'll add new maps, we'll add new items, we'll just keep adding. It's great because once it's out we can get the feedback from the fans and we can see what they like and how they're interacting w/ the product and help go down that line of what they're looking for."

Those aren't broad promises, and no one cares that they didn't write it on paper... the reason no one was bitching about L4D's lack of content at the beginning was because most media reviews assumed there would be some sort of DLC in the future due to what Valve had said and promised.

"All this outrage should have come when L4D1 came out., and it wasn't in my opinion worth what you paid."

Maybe the general media shouldn't have given it such high scores then.... or a perfect score for that matter... G4TV 5/5 http://g4tv.com/games/pc/36634 /Left-4-Dead/review/
Why would you give a game 5/5 if it isn't worth what you paid? Oh yea, because they promised DLC. Even the general media thought there needed more content/valve was going to add new content... this link sums it up nicely.

    http://forums.steampowered.c om/forums/showthread.php?t=904 952

In closing... since you slander us as nerd ragers, I'll be brutally honest to the people broadcasting this bull... Sessler; You are a clown that manages to talk loudly and somewhat convincingly... but no pertinent information is coming out of your mouth , Webb; you were questionably hot 4 years ago and added nothing to the program except sitting in between two trolls, guy on right; for the love of god stop trying so hard.

From the L4D Boycott. Please respond to this. I would like to see a debate from someone who isn't just 5% in support of the nerd rage.

    "Mr.Sessler,

It has come to our attention that you recently spoke about our group on your segment entitled Sessler's Soapbox . You brought up some interesting points about those in opposition to Left 4 Dead 2, and we welcome your comments. While there were some over generalizations made during the show, that is understandable. You must be reporting on a lot of different groups that are upset about this release, and have to address a wide community of people. We most definitely do not envy your job.

The Left 4 Dead 2 boycott staff would like to invite you to sit down with some of our community members, many of whom are fans of you and your work, so that we may discuss any questions or misconceptions you may have about us.

Feel free to contact us at the boycott if you are interested and would like to set something up. Our email is l4d2boycott@gmail.com

    Thank you for your time.

    Sincerely,

    The L4D2 Boycott Staff
    http://steamcommunity.com/gr oups/L4D2Boycott "

The following is a personal opinion.

THE BIGGEST MISCONEPTION: Most resonable people believe L4D2 can't be Free at this point due to the effort that has gone into it. It should be an EXPANSION as to not split the community, and still allow for L4D1 to be supported.

L4D1 and L4d2 are not complimentary. Chet himself says L4D2 is the answer to the "problems" he saw in L4D1. One of them being corner camping, and shockingly, they didn't see that as a viable strategy. No one is going to buy the first game since L4D1 doesn't actually have a story. L4D2 does. It's what Halo 2 Multiplayer is to Halo 1 multiplayer. Why would people buy both if the second is frankly, an improvement.

As part of the "nerd rage" group. I bought L4D expect the support Valve has given to all their games, great modding potential, and post release support. I know CS, CS:S, DOD:S, and most notably TF2 have all had good support post-release. From quotes already given in this thread, the support was expected to continue upon the release of L4D1.

Many disappointments followed, from the forced matchmaking all the way to the flawed SDK and custom map support. Simply put, finding custom map games is a lot more linear, and do not lend themselves nearly as well to discovery of new maps as all other Valve games have. You join games based on a map, hoping to find players playing it, not based on players willing to play custom maps.

The new weapons are reskins and remodels, no new actual functions. The modding community has already provided a large supply of reskins and a few new models. Melee weapons are damage buffed Gas canisters. Incendiary ammo is a gimmick that many players are expecting to hurt versus, due to the ability to take light a player tank much easier.

Objective cresendos could have been implimented if the SDK was released on time. That's just an extra entity.

Dynamic Mapper, if it's genuinly a randomly generated section of a map, that's something respectable, even though it's been done in CS:S and currently a mod is being made for Half Life 2 specializing in this. If it's just A/B/C prefab paths, then thats something able to be modded and mapped in if the L4D team doesn't specifically make L4D to not be able to do it.

Other than real dynamic mapping(which I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't actually happen and it was simply a/b/c prefabs or object blocking), the voice work and a genuine story is the only thing that strikes me as "all-it's-cracked-up-to-be" and would generate excitment for me.

L4D2 is nothing what I'd expect from a sequal. It's given a development cycle of less than 1-year. Most of the alleged new content is less than spectacular to those who are frimilar with game development.

Plus, it's so soon, as of now restricting any new players from entering the L4D1 community. Since L4D is a multiplayer game, it's only as good as the community around it. Valve could have simply sat on their hands without any new updates other than an SDK, and watch the money flow in, the expectation of updates is enough to drive sales. But they beefed it, and decided to doom a young restless community.

The biggest influence for me though. Is my gut reaction. I thought it was a joke. They joked about firing staff on the TF2 blog. Maybe this was another Valve troll. But they really are releasing a new game THIS early. What happened to Valve time?

I've learned now though, that even though Valve bought Turtle Rock, Turtle Rock hasn't adopted Valve's philosophy. I won't be buying L4D2 for this reason. I encourage any who haven't bought L4D1 to buy L4D2 if interested, it's a decent deal because it's more of what L4D1 was meant to be.

But for me, as of now, I can't help but associate Turtle Rock with the business as usual sect. The developer that feeds off rich or ignorent consumers and certainly not part the Valve I've known since HL1.

One of the reasons X-Play gave this game a five out of five was that, while it was enjoyable and the levels were fun, they also expected there to be extra content coming out. But there really hasn't been. As I have said on the forums, I really don't appreciate the way Adam has been completely insulting to those who have had a problem with not seeing the complete value in the first game. But, hey, if Adam and Morgan are going to go 'Oh! There's more stuff coming! That's why it's a good product' when it comes out, and then insult gamers that expect that... than it more-so lowers my opinion of X-Play, especially when it then goes on to insult the people they re-assured.

Wow, u know it really dissapoints me to see people actually complaining about valve. Who seriously can say that they have not delivered greatly with left 4 dead??? How many other games do you get an entirely new mode of play AND a new map completely FREE?! You couldn't even get versus mode on Resident Evil 5 without paying extra and that mode was even published in the strategy guide BEFORE the game was released. If everyone is gonna keep complaining about companies that even throw free goodies out for a game (which by the way i have played L4D continuously longer than any other game i've owned even BEFORE they added the survival mode) then were just gonna end up screwing ourselves by aggrivating and disrespecting the developers to the point where they are like hey screw it noone cares what we do for them, charge em. I think left 4 dead is obviously a whole new game, it's an entirely new enviornment, new characters, a new location, and new infected. Did you guys forget this was named game of the year??? Doesn't that mean it's worth paying for? I spent nearly 100 bux on Resident Evil 5 and trust me i'm a HUGE RE fan, and i was more dissapointed than i've ever been in an RE game. Valve rocks my socks and i'll gladly pay full price for Left 4 Dead 2.
