ya, adam totally agree with you and to tell a funny story, the other day i poped killzone 2 ina nd jumped in a match and i shoot this dude in the face and i call him a noob and run over him, then in turn he calls me a homophobic name ( i think thats how it spelt) now i was pissed and this kid sounded like he was 4, now i am 14 and am mature enough to know that i dnt know these people and shouldnt do anything about it plus we r all gamers and just want to hav fun but it is now being ruined by 5 year olds that think there the new crack.

I have several friends who do this kind of thing whether it is in-game or not, and it really strains our friendship at times. A couple months ago, I was hanging out with friends (one of whom happened to be African - I'll call him "John"), when "Mike" came over for a surprise visit. We were all watching TV and talking with one another perfectly civilly for a while when, out of the blue, "Mike" uses the N-word in casual conversation. He caught himself immediately afterward and apologized to "John" (who may have missed the whole exchange, or at least pretended like he did), but it still upset me. "John" doesn't even use the word himself (an endearing trait, since the acceptable use of any word should not be based on racial criteria), yet "Mike" somehow finds it perfectly acceptable to continue the trend of casual use of an archaic and barbaric slur.

At any rate, I've talked to them about it before, and their reasoning behind using such language, or so they say, is quite similar to my reasoning for not using it. The acceptable use of any word should not be based on racial, cultural, physical, mental, etc. criteria. They argue that any and every word should be acceptable to use by anyone. To their credit, they insult one another with the "appropriate" racially-charged slurs corresponding to their own genetic background and they all laugh it off. To an extent, I agree with them, but I find that they seem to be using this "stance" to justify their blatantly racist and homophobic comments. I hate straddling lines and trying not to step on toes in the interest of being "politically correct," but there's a difference between some people being too sensitive and other people intentionally inciting racially charged conflict.

Normally, I hate all things sessler, his views are too cynical for my taste, HOWEVER, I do respect his input on video games. That being said, I also have noticed this disturbing trend. The reason these people can't help but go on 20-minute rants saying nothing but racist, sexist, and homophobic slurs is simple. Ignorance. It takes a strong mind to be able to handle a game, and still come up competent and personalized insults. These ignorant, small-minded, infantile people cannot handle it, so they simply blurt out the things they know are the most offensive to the biggest number of people. Howeverm I see no real way to stop this, without causing a huge disturbance for all the gamers who either just respect their fellow gamers, or are more intelligent about their trash talk. I know from experience that the Xbox Live "file complaint" option is a joke. One person cannot get another removed for innappropriate game behavior, no matter how offensive it is.But, this is why we have options like the mute button, and on Xbox live, the ability to avoid the player.

And if there's anyone who IS a bigot on xbox live, reading this, PLEASE, take this next part personally and take it to heart.... ahem. The only people that use offensive slurs to offend people anymore are just ignorant backwoods hillbillies that are AFRAID of what they don't understand. Although they live with the inbred creations of brother-mother love, a black person stuns them. instead of getting yourself that "hi-tac inturnat" and "sex box three-cindy" you should have spent the money on a slightly current textbook, and tried tio get an education. You are pathetic and in reality, the biggest *MEOW* on the face of the planet, only choosing to use the words when you are anonymous, or in some cases only around your other bigot friends. I challenge your bigot ways. Next time you're in public, find a person of color, walk up to him the names you call people on xbox live. See what happens.

Thanks for the highly relevant gaming topic, I"ve been wanting to get that one off my chest for a while. THANKS ADAM!

I'm waiting to see if one of the many homophobes on this site (you know who you are) have the balls to answer Adams question of why you feel a need to do this online? But I suppose they will hide like cowards behind the anonymity of the internet and say nothing.....

Great points in the video. It's sad to see that this trend isn't going away at all. The video was made over a year ago, and it seems like it just keeps getting worse. It's rediculous how people just pick the "popular" insults that would be hurtful to the largest amount of people and throw it around to try and get a reaction. By using these terms, the speaker is basically associating the group of people (based on sexuality or race) with a negative, portraying the disgusting ignorance that they themselves posses.

U should do what I do and not use your mic . Is it this type of s--t annoying? Yes it is, but people have options on these these types of things, like muting players or not using your mic. No offense, I respect your opinion, but it almost seems like your using the Soapbox to push your Liberal views on everyone else... not cool

*p.s. I'm a former Marine and what we used to say to each other on a daily basis was probably a lot worse than what you heard and we are around people from all walks of life. WORDS ARE JUST THAT, WORDS*

I completely agree with this, I play on PSN and just from my experience it seems like I barely run into those types of people. I run into more of them while playing on my friends Xbox. But usually when I run into those people, I just keep a cool head and make them feel like a fool, and usually one or two other people with join in with me. Once they realize that there not getting to me, and I am just making them sound stupid they quiet up.

To be honest I think part of the problem with young gamers cursing so much is because older gamers tend to not take them seriously or don't like playing with them when they hear a kids voice, so kids feel they need to run their mouth to be respected. It is probably also due to their parents, considering that they got their 10 year old an M rated game to begin with.

@xwingvmanx I like that last comment you made, I never really thought of that. When playing games like COD4 and there are little kids, i'm talking pre-pubescent here, I never realized that those kids are playing games designed for us 18 and older crowd. You could avoid this in games like WoW by picking the correct server. i played on Argent Dawn for years and, while there were a few "bad apples", most of the population there were mature enough to there wasn't terrible "barrens chat" going on all the time. But with Xbox Live or PSN for each game it's like being in a giant hat that names get pulled out of and theres no control over who you play with.

The only thing that bothers me with the mute function is that i don't want to have to mute a bunch of people every time i play a game, i just wish that parents would set a better example for their children. in my experience the kids with the foulest mouths tend to come from homes where parents curse up and down in front of them so that they see it as normal and don't realize that that is not how society works.

Anonymity is the problem as well as an overall lack of common courtesy. I'm online all the time, and I hear all sorts of garbage. It affects me for a second, and then I remember who these folks are. These are the powerless tweens who haven't had their testicles drop yet, and get no respect in any other area of their lives, so they take it upon themselves to ruin everyone else's good time. Once that processes, I mute the bastards, and then proceed to tee off on their faces. After which, I leave them some negative feedback in order to warn the next civil minded soul that they re about to engage a total prick in combat.

I had to scrap my whole comment due to using the words you used in that video. Haha, how's that for hypocrisy. You can use what ever words you want in that video, which the "bleep" only masking the sound of the word. I can't even replace the vowels with asterisks.

My whole point was: These people shouldn't have to censor their vocabulary due to the fact it may offend somebody. Sure, if they're using it to offend, then it will. But, if it's just thrown out as a word to express an emotion, then there is asbolutely no problem there. How dare you call them all ignorant, when you yourself end the video with the word "bastard". Which, where I'm from, describes a child born out of wedlock. Surely, despite it only being used to describe them, the way you used it could be offensive.
Why? Because it's the way it's used. The words you are talking about are merely used to describe a certain type of person. It's as offensive as you want it to be.

I'm not racist, nor am I a homophobe. I completely respect all races, and all ways of life. Of course, some who use the word don't have the same reason as me, but they still have a reason.
You called them what you called them because you don't like how they are, how is that any different to how they feel about those they insult?
Please, explain that one to me.

Agreed Sessler. one thing that rears it's ugly head in my xbl parties is people using the word rape, I make a point to always point it out to my friends and remind them it's not something to be used as a substitute for destroying the competition.

Adam Sessler, you are my hero. I'm not nearly articulate enough to put it that well so I thank you for voicing a concern I've had for some time now. I don't think the problem is that the people who use these terms are racists or homophobes though. I believe the root problem here is that the racist and homophobic connotations of the words have been lost. People don't even think about the fact that those words were made to denigrate an entire group of people and rather use them as a generic expletive. Unfortunately I don't think your challenge will be taken up by many but here's to hopin'.

yeah this is a huge problem. But thank God for xbox live parties. Whenever i get on i always join my friends in a party and just play our separate games so i don't have to hear those little immature kids screaming and cursing.
