 iPad

The amount of hype leading to Apple's iPad reveal this week was astounding. You couldn't avoid it if you tried (but why would you?). It's difficult to imagine how even Apple could have lived up to the expectations for their latest product. The iPad has been revealed, however, and we decided to check in with some of the same iPhone developers we previously asked to make predictions about the then-mysterious new tablet device. Did the iPad live up to their expectations? Not for everyone -- yet.

All Existing iPhone Apps Work On iPad -- Including Games

The leader of the modern casual gaming revolution, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, was not impressed with Apple's latest offering, the just-revealed iPad. In an interview with The New York Times, Iwata brushed away concerns the iPad would encroach on Nintendo's own offerings, like DS.

''It was a bigger iPod Touch," said Iwata.

Of course, Nintendo's own DSi XL is really just a bigger DS, too.

Iwata was equally dismissive of the potential for 3D video games in a post-Avatar world, and based on reaction around here from CES's 3D push, that's a feeling most TheFeed readers can get behind.

''I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home," he said, echoing a common criticism of the concept. "How is that going to look to other people?''

they're totally right about the iPod touch XL, but you got to think Nintendo would know a thing or two about 3D gaming, they did make the horrible fail of a system the Virtual Boy. Remember that thing, only on the market a year and was probably Nintendo's second biggest mistake, being passed by shunning their hardcore market.

On Monday, we presented our expectations...our hopes and dreams...for the Apple tablet. Now that we have actual information to go on, our hopes and dreams have been amended accordingly. And in the case of Steve Johnson, his life has been given a whole new meaning. But first, enjoy this video presentation of myself and Patrick Klepek discussing Apple's new baby.

Eric Eckstein, Director of Gaming Editorial

Naturally, no one was surprised that the device in question was a tablet, but as a gamer, I'm a bit disappointed in the end product.  Sure, it's a mass market presentation, designed to get children to buy for their parents and gadget fiends to impulse buy only to sell it on eBay a month before generation two streets, but I was hoping for something a bit more revolutionary in the hardware. In the end, everyone's joking that it's essentially a giant iPhone and, as suspected, gaming is just a byproduct.  Maybe if they had figured out a way to work with Ubisoft to show off R.U.S.E. or another game that utilizes the screen real estate and touch mechanics, I'd be interested but gaming seems to be just one of many things you can do with the iPad, but it's not done significantly better or different than before.

While most of us were forced to watch the events of today's Apple iPad event from afar, Attack of the Show's Chris Hardwick was actually there and went hands-on with the iPad. What's he think?

Ask An Expert: Apple's iPad »

We know what you guys think about the Apple iPad, but what about those tech experts? You know, the people who actually get paid to be all nerdy and talk about gadgets all day?

Chris Hardwick caught up with three experts for their first impressions on the iPad, including Natali Del Conte from CNET.com, Ryan Block of GDGT.com and Gizmodo's Jason Chen to find out what they really thought about Apple's latest creation.

Strange that Chris pretty much had to feed them negative points. I would have thought the complete lack of flash, USB ports, Multi-tasking, Camera and 3G not being standard features would be at the front of a tech expert's mind when talking about the device. Cudos to Chris for at least trying to get some clearly bias people to have an honest discussion about the device.

The iPad is official. So, are you buying one?

Yeah, I'm not goin for it. I'm pretty much stuck on Android, so if a hardware company comes out with an Android tablet, I might look at that. Especially since I'd rather spend money elsewhere. I can buy a heck of a lot of booze and video games for $499 - $829.

iPad Prices Starting At $499...All The Way To $829, Depending On Features Perhaps the biggest question going into Apple's event today wasn't if Apple would reveal their tablet (now revealed to be the iPad), but how much the device would actually end up costing.

The answer has been revealed: $499....sort of. It depends on what model you want from it.

  • Wi-Fi Only: $499 (16GB), $599 (32GB), $699 (64GB)
  • Wi-Fi + 3G: $629 (16GB), $729 (32GB), $829 (64GB)

Apple brokered a deal with AT&T for the 3G connections that doesn't require consumers to sign on a contract. 3G data for the iPad is pre-paid and reportedly can be cancelled at any time.

  • 3G With 250MB Cap: $14.99/month
  • 3G With Unlimited Data: $29.99/month

iPad can also connect to any AT&T Wi-Fi hot spot for free.

Be sure to watch Attack of the Show on G4 this evening at 7PM (EST) for even more Apple reaction, discussion and madness.

also has a 160gb drive which is good enough for me and can do all the things i need for school and then some...

iPad Accessories Announced

Apple has dropped word on a few accessories for the iPad. they are:

  • A dock
  • A keyboard
  • A keyboard dock
  • Carrying case/stand

Personally, a keyboard is a must-buy for me. No matter how good the touch devices get, there's nothing that compares to the soothing clicking of a real keypad... I'd also need a case. And a dock... damn, I'll be buying all these things!

More details on all these devices when they become available.

It should come with this junk out of the box. All it is is $4 worth of extra plastic that they will charge probably $50 for.

iPad

Occam's Razor proved correct this morning, when Apple revealed their new tablet computing device dubbed the "iPad." And to the surprise of people who abandoned logic and over-caffeinated concept artists, it looks exactly like the rest of us thought it would: a giant iPhone/iPod Touch.

Featuring a Home button on the bottom (or side if you're holding it the other way), and a thick black border surrounding the touch screen -- obviously providing a safe place for your thumbs to hold the contraption without interfering with navigation -- the iPad appears to be roughly the same size as an 8" x 11" sheet of paper (meaning a roughly 10" screen). Unless my perspective is wrong and Steve Jobs is either 4 or 9 feet tall.

The iPad

Knee-jerk gaming implications would include room for two or three people to crowd around the device as it lays flat on a surface. But if you're holding it yourself, it seems like holding it in a landscape configuration might be a comfort issue. We shall have to wait and see...more analysis and hype-drenched hysteria are coming to you all day here on TheFeed, and be sure to watch Attack of the Show on G4 this evening at 7PM (EST) for even more.

I know i am going to get backlash for this from apple fans, but i think apple has no clue what "tablet" means. A tablet is supposed ot be a full featured computer and the "ipad" is just a oversized and overpriced ipod touch and also unnecessary in my opinion. Everyone reading this go here and watch this video it's hilarious http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =YFNQE_TzQNI

this is what a tablet should be and i applaud Lenovo for it which is just awesome.

iBooks App

At the big Apple Announcement Event moments ago, Apple founder Steve Jobs introduced iBooks for the iPad, a book reading application. Publishers participating include Penguin, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and Hachette book group -- all heavy-hitters in the publishing world.

The books feature full-color photographs, as well as the ability to turn pages, zoom in, and otherwise browse content using the iPad's touch screen.

No word on prices yet, or how rigid/loose the system will be -- IE: Will users be able to "self-publish" onto the iPad? -- but one thing is for sure: The Amazon Kindle, with its proprietary books and relative lack of other features, is looking pretty last-gen, eh?

Apple Makes Games A Big Focus For iPad -- Need For Speed, Nova, Others Shown The continued prominence of video games on the iPhone and iPod Touch made it a natural expectation that Apple would make video games part of the company's tablet device, now revealed to officially be called the iPad. At the San Francisco event today, Apple showed off a number of games for the device.

Apple first showed off Gameloft's NOVA, otherwise known as Halo for the iPhone. A somewhat unabashed rip-off of Bungie's shooter with higher-resolution assets and enhanced touch.

Electronic Arts then came on stage with an upgraded Need For Speed Shift. EA took advantage of the added real-estate offered by the iPad with additional touch mechanics, like swiping up and down to change gears and the ability to switch into an in-car perspective by simply tapping on the car itself.

Be sure to watch Attack of the Show on G4 this evening at 7PM (EST) for even more Apple reaction, discussion and madness.

We should see plenty more examples of gaming on the iPad in the days ahead.
