We've all played clones before. When a big franchise develops a great gameplay mechanic and becomes popular it's only a matter of time before other publishers and developers start pumping out very familiar feeling games. Adam Sessler was reminded of this while he was writing his review of Dante's Inferno, and some of you didn't take too kindly to his references to the God of War series. So, being the humanitarian that he is, Adam decided to use this week's Soapbox to explain himself to you, his loyal audience. Find out why The Sess thinks that not all clones are bad, just the ones that lack innovation and originality. Like that crappy Bruce Willis movie.

Next Assassin's Creed Takes Place In Rome, Stars Ezio

The Ubisoft info train just keeps rolling today, as the publisher has revealed that the next Assassin’s Creed, which continues the story of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, will take place in Rome. The confirmation came during Ubisoft’s third quarter financial call.

Seeing as the first game ended in Italy’s capital city, this news is far from surprising, but it’s still good to know, especially since, as Ubisoft explained, it means Ezio will be taking the fight to those dastardly Templars on their turf. It’s about time too. I mean, if you don’t count the end of Assassin’s Creed II.

Ubisoft also said that the game will feature "very innovative assassination multiplayer,” and that the publisher will be putting a heavy emphasis on cooperative multiplayer in all future titles as well.

What do you think about continuing Ezio’s story as opposed to jumping into a new character in a different time period?

Even though Ezio is going to be in it, i belive that a majority of the game will be with Desmond.

Dante's Inferno was released this week. My review sparked some intense debate, especially from gamers with a deep love for God of War. If you want to go beyond the review, though, check out my discussion with Adam Sessler, where I had a chance to expand on some points in the review and reflect on what it's like to read through a very deep pool of heated (but welcomed!) commentary.

Second Mass Effect DLC Pack Now Available On Xbox Live

I placed was a small asterisk next to Electronic Arts' casual announcement of "something far-reaching from Mass Effect" in early 2011 during a financial call yesterday: maybe it was a mistake. Nothing Mass Effect-related was in EA's uncharacteristically detailed lineup for the next 12 months, but there was mention of a new Dragon Age game due to arrive between January and March 2011.

That would be quite the mistake, however. Thankfully, it wasn't one.

An EA spokesperson has just confirmed there was no confusion yesterday, and BioWare and EA are, indeed, cooking up something Mass Effect-related that will arrive sometime in early 2011.

"Both of those games [Mass Effect and Dragon Age] were referenced in our plans for the coming fiscal year," said the spokesperson.

Let your rampant and potentially misguided speculation...begin.

crossing my fingers for major expansion or Mass Effect 3, provided it is ready to go then and not being rushed... im going to be crushed if EA somehow thinks "far reaching " means a PS3 port of ME 1 and ME 2

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Announced, Coming Holiday 2010

Ubisoft announced today that the next installment in its hit Ghost Recon series will be hitting shelves this holiday season for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (which just sounds like a streamlined way of saying “Advanced Warfighter,” right?) is being developed by Ubisoft Paris, the team behind the Advanced Warfighter and Advanced Warfighter 2. Ubisoft says the game "will go beyond the core Ghost Recon franchise and deliver a fresh gameplay experience, with an unparalleled level of quality that will excite long-time fans and newcomers alike."

There will also be a multiplayer beta this summer, but if you want access to it, you’ll have to pick up a copy of Splinter Cell: Conviction (poor you!).

I just hope it feels more "traditional" Tom Clancy. I love the Modern Warfare franchise for its balls-to-the-wall-80's-"Die-Ha rd"-action-movieness, and I appreciated the way GRAW and Rainbow Six: Vegas straddled that line, but when it comes to the Clancy branch of tactical shooters, I want my stoic realism I miss the old days of Rainbow Six 1 on PCs: plan your attack, execute, and one hit and you're dead.

What kind of game is it?

A modern day beat 'em up. A hack 'n slash. Have you played God of War? You have a pretty good idea of what to expect from Dante's Inferno. Dead Space developer Visceral Games have lifted the best elements of God of War's combat and tossed it into a journey through Hell that's based on the first part of Dante Alighieri's three-part epic poem, The Divine Comedy. Dante must travel through the nine circles of Hell to save his princess from none other than Lucifer.

Who's the developer?

Visceral Games, formerly known as EA Redwood Shores, is same studio within Electronic Arts that developed Dead Space. It's not the same team (they're working on Dead Space 2), but you can definitely tell it's from the same thinktank. They also worked on the internally developed the Wii spin-off, Dead Space: Extraction, both The Godfather games and The Simpsons Game.

New Armor, Shotgun For Mass Effect 2 Available Tomorrow

Tomorrow, some much anticipated armor and a shotgun will be available for Mass Effect 2 players. Both PC and 360 gamers will be able to download the gear for free at noon through the in-game Cerberus Network. Here's what's on-tap:

Cerberus Assault Armor
Cerberus assault armor is designed for shock troops, turn the tide of battle against creatures or forces that would decimate normal soldiers.
Increases heavy weapon ammo capacity by +10%
Increases shields by +10%
Increases health by +10%

M-22a Eviscerator Shotgun
The M-22a Eviscerator Shotgun is a longer-range shotgun with armor-piercing loads. This design also violates several intergalactic weapons treaties, so the M-22a is not distributed to militaries.

What do you think? Pretty hot, right?

Big, Upsetting Fable III Announcement Coming This Week

Upon hearing the news last week that Peter Molyneux and the whimsical wizards over at Lionhead Studios plan to show off Fable III at Microsoft’s X10 event this week, I’m guessing that quite a few Fable fans selected the “Jump for Joy” option from their personal action menus. If this describes your response, then Molyneux has some words of warning for you.

"There’s some – Wow – there’s some very, very big things happening in Fable. Bigger than you think, and it’s going to really going to upset people. I’m really scared. When I go out and tell people what it is, they’re going to get super pissed off. They really are. But it’s the right thing to do,” Molyneux recently told Game Reactor.

Seeing as gamers have come to expect Molyneux games to have their release dates pushed at least a few times, it would be hard to imagine that a Fable III delay would really "piss off" that many gamers. If the game were 100 percent Project Natal-powered, then that would definitely elicit some rather unpleasant feelings among players. This is probably the least likely scenario, seeing as I doubt Microsoft would pull a Tony Hawk Ride with one of their most precious franchises, but anything’s possible I guess. Fortunately, we only have to wait a few days before we know the devastating truth.

The Story So Far: Mass Effect

After the launch of Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2, you'd think BioWare would be quiet for a little while. But according to comments from Electronic Arts COO John Schappert, there is "something far-reaching from Mass Effect" coming between January 1 and March 31, 2011.

Schapper's comments came during a discussion of EA's latest financial results and he provided no other details during the conference call. Is it Mass Effect 3 already? Is it an expansion pack?

In an earlier press release, EA listed an unnamed Dragon Age title coming to consoles, handhelds and PC during the same period. Schappert did not mention the Dragon Age title during the conference call. It's possible Schappert meant to reference Dragon Age, but accidentally said Mass Effect.

I've contacted EA for clarification. Stay tuned.

@most everyone against ME franchise going muultiplatform
Just because I suggest that ME franchise could be ported to PS3 doesnt mean I advocate or condone the possibility. Im just attempting to interpret/rationalize what was said during an EA Conference call/FINANCIAL Earnings report. Again, my comment is in no way a product of fanboyism, as I own both major consoles, as any real gamer would... but some of you need to start thinking outside of the box, pun intended.

Mass Effect 2

Electronic Arts has been making interesting moves to encourage users to avoid selling their video games to retailers and creating incentives for gamers to buy new versions of games. The Saboteur had the much-discussed breasts downloadable content and Mass Effect 2 shipped with a much more ambitious "Cerberus Network," which costs someone with a used copy $15 to gain access to.

During a conference call this afternoon discussing EA's latest financial results, EA's leadership said there would be more things like Cerberus Network in upcoming games from the company.

"In every case," said EA CEO John Riccitiello, "what we've seen is a very positive response from the consumer and each case, particularly starting with Dragon Age, a strong pick-up in revenue per user. By and large, they like the extra content and we think it's a strong positive move."

Cerberus Network is a in-game store for Mass Effect 2. BioWare has launched free content -- both missions and characters -- only available through Cerberus Network. Bigger downloadable content (think: Dragon Age: Awakening) will be available outside of the Cerberus Network.

"We've got similar strong PDLC [paid downloadable content] with each and every one of our titles this year," continued Riccitiello.

This is the wrong step in the wrong direction. Lower the price to $20.00 for games since you are robbing us blind with DLC and only giving us 25% of the game anways for 60.00. If it has E.A's name on it I just stop buying it. Tired of the BS they are trying to pull. I only buy new games but I am tired of the hoops we have to jump through to pay for a game
