It's a well-documented phenomenon in the game news industry that secret information gets leaked fairly regularly. It's almost unavoidable. But why is that not the case with other media coverage? It seems to be most prevalent when it comes to gaming blogs and game publishers. Such is the topic of this week's Sessler's Soapbox. Adam talks about how he sees the leaks as a result of the exclusivity deals that media outlets make, therefore creating a culture of "we got it first" amongst the outlets. But let the Sess explain it for himself.

Sessler's Soapbox: Mafia II's (not so) Open World
This week, Adam uses his Soapbox to discuss a game he just reviewed, Mafia II. You may expect this game to be an open-world type of sandbox similar to the GTA franchise, but you'd be wrong. While the city is yours to explore, there isn't any reason to. Your experience of this town is directed by the story of your character, something else Adam quite enjoyed. But don't take my word for it, let The Sess explain what he means.
China promotes sports to enhance the physical condition of its people; she is formulating policies to provide encouragement of this activity. She awards prizes to the excellent players for the best records both in china and the world. In the world the Chinese have become a strong people instead of the weaklings of East Asia . ugg boots

Sessler is back from QuakeCon 2010, and after moderating a panel about blockbuster games and the announcement of Bioshock Infinite, he's got a new topic for this week's Soapbox. When we play a video game we enter a world imagined by someone else, a universe created by a mind similar to ours. The creation of that world, and its full realization within the game, usually has a lot to do with how pleased we are with the experience. But don't listen to me, listen to the Sess.
Sessler's Soapbox: Changing the Game is a Good Thing
Change, for the most part, is a good thing. But not everyone is comfortable with change. Sometimes, the one thing you've grown accustomed to is the last thing you want to change, even if it's for the better. Such is the subject of this week's Soapbox. Adam uses Madden NFL 11's new Game Flow system as an example of how innovations within a gaming franchise, even if they're for the better, can often anger their core fanbase. What do you think of the Game Flow system? How do you feel about the character model changes in Infamous 2?
I for one agree with Adam. He's actually acting MATURE, and REASONABLE. Honestly, it's so funny how childish people get over some of the slightest changes in things. inFAMOUS 2 was a great example of studpidity from people. So Cole grew some hair, that was actually pretty realistic. Most game sequels just give the character a different set of clothes and maybe a scar or two and say "he/she's older now". By changing Cole, it felt like he had was changed as a person, not some digital doll who...

Leave a Comment »Sessler's Soapbox: Good Endings Make Great Games
We've all been there. You pour 10-20 hours into a game, master the mechanics, approach the final conflict... and end up with a giant WTF expression on your face. It's happened to the best of us. So why does it seem that an amazing game doesn't always mean it will have an amazing ending? Adam Sessler decided to use this week's Soapbox to discuss what he thinks developers should do to make sure their final act is as meaningful and epic as the rest of their game, and why he gets frustrated when the experience of finishing a game seems to ruin or contradict his experience up until that point. What do you think?
Worst ending for me would probably be a tie between Assassin's Creed and
Bioshock. Mainly because I loved both games which made the crap endings even more disappointing. Best ending ever would definitely be Half-Life 2
or Metal Gear Solid 4

Leave a Comment »Sessler's Soapbox: Adam's Experience at Comic-Con 2010
In case you hadn't heard, there was this little convention in San Diego last week that had some movie people, some video games, and a couple of comics. I think it might have been the boat show. Either that or Comic-Con. But of course, Adam Sessler was there to not only do his duty for G4, but he also hosted a couple panels himself, and found a little piece of his own nerd nostalgia inside Artist Alley. Check out this week's Soapbox to hear about Adam's experience at Comic-Con 2010.
Now I'm going to check out Metropol.

Leave a Comment »Sessler's Soapbox: Downloadable Games Fuel Creativity
Alright, everyone calm down, we've got a new Soapbox for you this week. While he was hiding from the bright lights of the city in his air-conditioned home, Adam discovered some amazing new games that are downloadable on your home consoles. Specifically Limbo and DeathSpank. Obviously these unique, original properties had a much easier time getting onto the PSN or XBLA than if they had tried to publish them on actual discs. So what does that mean for the future of the gaming industry? Will the higher levels of creativity be allowed to flourish in the digital distribution space? Or will this bring larger publishers in on no-disc media?
I feel as though Microsoft should have released Deathspank as a summer arcade title instead of the terrible Hydro Thunder Hurricane. I love the creative style of both Deathspank and Limbo, and I hope to see a few other gems like this sneak into my library before the end of summer, or at least before the end of the year.
Also, Adam, I just wanted to tell you that you truly get the beauty of video games (in my humble opinion) much better than any other video game reviewer that I have...

Sessler's Soapbox was born at E3 2008, which means the show is now 2 years old! Can you believe it? Well today we'd like to take a moment to look back at the last year of Soapboxes and revisit our 3 favorite episodes.
First, we'll go back to October of last year to allow Adam to remind us why zombies are such an important part of the American pop-culture lexicon that we all live in.
What about the Killzone 2 mailbag episode? That was soooooo funny

Leave a Comment »Sessler's Soapbox: The Science of Game Reviews
We're all familiar with game reviews. Heck, it's probably part of the reason you're reading this right now. But regular viewers of Sessler's Soapbox also know how Adam feels about reviews. In his opinion is all about the written word, not the final score. Well this week's Soapbox focuses on a recent study that attempted to determine if reading a review before you play a game can affect your enjoyment and opinion of it. Check out what Adam thinks and express your opinions below in the comments section.
I'm looking for a senior research project for my psyc degree, and I think judging the number against the content of a review is a likely candidate. It has application to my future field (industrial/organizational psychology), is fairly simple to design, and it's something I'm genuinely interested in. Do you know of any other groups/individuals that may already be on this task?

Leave a Comment »By now I'm sure you all know during E3 our offices are quite busy. So much so that a few things sometimes fall through the cracks. So to make up for it, we're giving that E3 2010 episode of Sessler's Soapbox the love that it deserves. Sure this has already been on our site for two weeks, but we didn't give it the proper promotion, so you might have missed it! Check out this special "on the road" episode of Soapbox where Adam talks about the press conferences, the surprises, and who he thinks won or lost this year's E3. Enjoy!
I AGREE WITH YOUR STATEMENT XBOX IS THE LEADER IN ALLMOST EVERYTHING

Leave a Comment »We all know Adam's opinion of 3-D gaming by now. He's not a fan. But wait, what's that? He may have changed his mind? Yes that is the magic of the Nintendo 3DS ladies and gentlemen. It has even warmed the cockles of The Sess's heart. After last week's E3 and his hands-on time with the impressive new handheld device, he has softened on the concept of 3-D gaming and is willing to give it a shot and see how game developers will take us into the third dimension.
i'm a nerd and therefore i wear glasses
thus making the 3D glasses very uncomfortable
therefore, no glasses equal great experience
so yea, i would think that the 3DS would be my solution to 2 glasses weighting down my nose

By now you all probably know that everyone in our office can't wait to get the new iPhone 4. While some of you may disagree, you can't deny the place Apple products have taken in the world of gaming. Sure we all love Peggle and Plants vs. Zombies, but are these really games in the purest sense of the word? Such is the subject of this week's Soapbox. After Adam explains his stress levels, he digs into why he thinks an iPhone or iPad game is a different animal from a console or PC game you sit down and play for extended periods of time. What do you think?
so long as you have a kickass PC or 3DS 3D is great.
but console 3D is very last-minute-make-some-money-wi th-a-bad-product-y

Leave a Comment »Nintendo has done it again. They've filled the bright and shiny platforming void in our lives with an amazing little game called Super Mario Galaxy 2. But of course, nothing's perfect. And even with all the praise that Adam has for it, there are some tiny issues that he thinks could improve the experience, which he will proceed to explain in this week's Sessler's Soapbox. Were you totally satisfied with your Mario experience? Or would you like to see some similar improvements?
I love watching him praise games I like <3 yup yup *nod, nod*

Leave a Comment »Sessler's Soapbox: Red Dead Redemption Perfects the Western Video Game
It's no secret that we here at the G4 offices love playing Red Dead Redemption. So it comes as no surprise that Adam decided to use the same game as the subject for this week's Soapbox. Is this the first game to nail down the Western Video Game genre? Or is the game a success regardless of its setting? Take a listen to Adam's opinion and let us know what you think in the comments below.
adam sess, is the best host in the world... he can even convince you to buy a peace of c$@p!!

In case you didn't see last week's Soapbox, Adam was recently invited to give the commencement speech at the ceremony for recent graduates of the SMU Guildhall Game Development Education School in Dallas, Texas. Not only was Adam deeply honored by the invitation, but he was also slightly nervous. After having spent the day seeing student games and projects, he was so impressed by their creativity and talent he felt they deserved the best speech he could possibly give them. In my opinion, I think he succeeded. Enjoy.
congradulations Adam, everyone has your back, so keep those casts showing and make it too the top
