Fable creator Peter Molyneux revealed some Fable III details at the X10 convention today, and, I, for one, am not angry. Earlier in the week, Molyneux promised gamers would react with rage at an announcement he planned to make about Fable III.
"When I go out and tell people what it is, they’re going to get super pissed off," he said. "They really are. But it’s the right thing to do."
Below is what Molyneux revealed. See if it makes you angry:
- Fable III will have no Heads-Up Display. -- Hmm... I just took my blood-pressure, and it's normal. Seems like a rational, logical choice for the game.
- You bond with other characters in the Fable III universe by touching them, hitting a button to either do something nice or something mean. -- I'm still calm. I like this idea, actually.
- Your character's weapons will change their physical appearance and attributes as you use them. Evil swords will drip blood, good ones will glow. -- I'm actually calmer than I was before hearing this, according to my EKG machine.
- Character-customization is more organic than in past Fable games, although Molyneux says he's "not supposed to talk about" that. -- I'm still perfectly un-angered.
And that's it. All the talk of touching other people seems to point to Natal, but there was, apparently, no mention of the motion sensing technology at X10, and nothing anger-inducing!
So Peter Molyneux got us all hyped-up, expecting the kind of ground-breaking announcement that brings up the ire of the gaming community, and then he stood up there and announced that there won't be a HUD? Seriously? That’s it? And that's supposed to make me mad? WTF? I've been tricked!
I might not have been paying such close attention to this event if it wasn't for the possibility of Molyneux making some off-the-cuff crazy remark that isn't part of the game's marketing plan, or announcing some huge change to the franchise, and yet, all I got is news of incremental improvements and carefully selected, corporate approved details! That just pisses me off...
Wait a minute... it worked! Peter Molyneux was right after all! Balance in the universe has been restored at last.

lol, i have the exact reaction as you sjohnson. i was so excited to find out what was going to "piss me off" so i was reading through, expecting something to make me mad and there was nothing! i was like O come on i wanted something new and exciting that was going to shock the nation (metaphorically speaking). so in the end i realized that he did piss me off just not the way i was expecting
the game looks like its going to be sweet though! cant wait!

This is exactly why everyone laughs at Molyneux all the time. The guy is a phony. He NEVER delivers on his promises and his games are lukewarm at best. This guy just needs to shoot his own ego down before WE do it for him.

No HUD kind of pisses me off. lol.
im starting to think he was joking when he said people would get super pissed just because every other thing he does seem to make some people super pissed.

Lol...how can ye stay angry at pete? Too funny....and hey...least his games tend to actually be awesome...even if they're not quite up to par with what he has in his head....that can be said about artists in every genre....

molyneux you tricky bastard

I'd be that egotistical if I created a game as unique as Black and White. I have faith in you Molyneux...just fix Fable III's co-op and maybe i'll forgive you for Fable II.

god...this man gets more and more stupid as time goes on.
he makes cool games, but stupid statements. I know some people make some stupid statements, but he does it for EVERY one of his releases. not to mention milo >.>

this has got to be one of the funniest moments in gaming history. peter molyneux, i love you and your bald head, you sneaky bastard!

Yeah Fable II's co-op was pretty bad but I still liked the game. All the things Molyneux said sounds cool (as long as my nobleman trousers don't get stained with the bloody sword)
RickAstin
of course....the possible downside here is that it's entirely possible that they nixed the "piss people off" reveal for a later date....
but I figure the Hud and adaptive weapons was what he was referring to....even if that's nothing to be angry about..
TheGamePhilosopher
Wow. Well, I'm pissed. Pissed that these were his announcements. I guess he was right.

...and then he took a dump on the stage?
Although he misled us, I do see it as a viable tactic - initially lead us on, blow it out of proportion, so that when the actual bad news arrives it doesn't seem too bad. Happened to me all the time...
"Son, it's about Grandma and Grandpa. They were driving on their way here when...when...they decided to stay at a hotel overnight...your mother and I are getting a divorce."
Yeah, childhood was fun...

I'm so angry I'm not angry!

was this a joke?

I don't love the idea of having no HUD whatsoever... I prefer games where you can turn off part or all of them, especially for once you know your way around and the controller interactions. But I would hardly say it makes me super p'd off. I still think its Natal, and they haven't announced it yet.

Not a word about the nuclear arms take over by the now sentient Milo and his threatening to destroy the world if Peter publishes Fable 3 (because users would spend too much time playing that and not talking to him about life stuff). Which proves what i posted about this yesterday! Peter is going to publish this game even though it means the death of us all!
I am very angry!

How about instead of all these new, cool features, give Fable III some interesting story to tell unlike the first two. I find it ironic that a game called "Fable" has some of the most mediocre story-telling I've ever experienced in a game. It's just one step above "The Princess is in the other castle" storyline.
Don't get me wrong. The games are fun, amazing places to explore and experience, but they don't really strike me as a short tale designed to teach a moral lesson (as is the definition of the word)... especially when you can choose to be good or evil.
If you need help with that, Mr. How about instead of all these new, cool features, give Fable III some interesting story to tell unlike the first two. If you need help with that, Mr. Molyneux, why don't you give the people over at BioWare or 2K a call?
