James Cameron's Avatar: The Game Review

When James Cameron came out on stage at Ubisoft's 2009 E3 Press Conference to talk about Avatar, you could feel the room come alive. Although we knew the film had a massive scope, Cameron had said little about the plot of his expensive and delicate passion project. Everyone was anxious to finally hear what it was all about. After about 35 minutes of semi-coherent rambling, only three things were clear: one, it was going to look damn good, two, Cameron was so deeply invested in this project that he couldn't explain it in a way that made sense and three, there was going to be the inevitable videogame tie-in.

Now, we're much more informed about the movie thanks go to a gigantic marketing push and as Avatar is about to hit theaters, Ubisoft's James Cameron's Avatar: The Game is set to hit stores. Jason D'Aprile has the review:

"Avatar isn't a terrible game; it's simply one that is nearly devoid of creativity beyond the alien landscape of Cameron's design. One of the most immediate problems is the lack of cohesive storytelling. So little focus is given to the setup and characters that there is no real connection to the interspecies war saga. Even worse, Avatar forces you to make a major decision about the plot of your game at the very beginning: whether or not to become a traitor to the human race. It happens at a point when you’ve played so little of the game, there’s simply no motivation to make a decision either way."

lets hope this isn't a sign of how the movie will be too. Great visuals, but weak-sauce story. I will fully admit, a good story will make me play a game despite it's flaws, but if the game play is outstanding, and the story is lame, you'll have a hard time convincing me to play it. (multi-player is a different matter all together. Someone in my party could enhance it by reading me a story though.)

The script was made 14 years ago. That's all. They're blowing up the technology as part of the marketing push, making it sound like it's been in PRODUCTION for that long. I work in the movie biz, and while this is going to be the most technically magnificent movie of all time, it didn't really take that long.
