What the G4 Staff is Thankful For

Eric Eckstein, Director of Gaming Editorial -- G4tv.com

I am thankful for the rise of cooperative gaming, because without it, I would probably be writing this surrounded by my cats. I learned long ago that adversarial gaming with loved ones leads to no good and inviting friends over to watch me play Dragon Age: Origins just doesn’t have the same appeal as getting together for Halo 3: ODST.  So now, thanks to clever game developers everywhere, there’s more compelling cooperative gaming than I can shake a joystick at; what a wonderful world!

Morgan Webb, Host -- X-Play

I'm thankful January is going to be as big for games as the holiday season. May the summer drought never come!

Andrew Pfister, Senior Games Editor -- G4tv.com

After what has unequivocally been the most difficult and challenging year of my life, I am thankful that I landed in Los Angeles with a job at G4 and have had the opportunity to enrich my life with new friends. The invisible bond that forms just by sharing a hobby with someone can put you on the most interesting paths in life, and when times are less than stellar, it's those people that are there to get you through it, hang out, and throw you into Piranha Plants. Also, I am thankful for beer.

Robert Manuel, Associate Producer -- X-Play

It is during these dark times when the light is fading and all seems lost that I am thankful for Second Wind.  Mistakes were made. Ammo was spent. Maybe I should have used my regular shotgun instead of the one that spits out a single shell of corrosion death. All faults are thrown aside when you’re on your back and life merely becomes a pair of fading crosshairs. Keep firing. Keep pulling that trigger soldier. Keep fighting. You never know when that last ounce of strength will pull you through. I am thankful for Second Wind and the chance to do it all over again.

Stephen Johnson, Lead Editor -- G4tv.com

I’m thankful for my PS3. I’m not being a fanboy here, I swear -- my 360 red-ringed last night, right before a long holiday weekend. If I didn’t have my PlayStation 3, I’d probably have to interact with other people and that only ends in restraining orders. But seriously, I’m thankful for my wife and son.

Jake Gaskill, Feed Writer -- G4tv.com

I’m so thankful that I’m able to say, "I get paid to write about video games" and have it actually be true, as opposed to being a lie I share with a group of unicorn dolls over tea…Seriously, I could not ask for a better place to work or for better people to work with. You all rock! Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of my family and friends. Thank you will never be enough. Oh, and I’m thankful for the ridiculous lineup of games slated for next year. Horray gaming!

J.P. Shub, Supervising Producer -- X-Play

This year I am most thankful for The Beatles: Rock Band. More than just a great game, it also serves as the ultimate way to introduce a new generation of kids to the genius of The Beatles. The re-mastered tracks sound fantastic and by playing along with the legendary songs you gain a whole new appreciation for the incredible talent the Fab Four possessed. I can only hope the Beatles Renaissance of 2009 will open people’s ears and help hasten the death of the soulless, auto-tuned corporate pop currently polluting the Top 40.

Dana Vinson, X-Play Interactive Producer

There were some bright spots in 2009. It was a great year for gaming and we finally got to see what our consoles were capable of. So many huge titles hit, sometimes it was hard to juggle everything I wanted to play at once, which is a good problem for a gamer to have. Plus, there was a lot of exciting industry news this year and I got to go on my first trip to Japan for Tokyo Game Show, which was a high point for me both personally and professionally.

As always, I have great friends and family who I am eternally thankful for; however, now I’m going to say what no one else is going to: as a whole, 2009 sucked harder than your aunt after two Long Islands at Applebee's. The economy took a grumpy, there was a distinct lack of happy news and no one I know had any good luck what-so-ever. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m really thankful 2009 is almost over. I can’t wait to start a new year, with a new set of dice roll, and see what happens. Maybe we’ll go on a hot streak.

Michael Leffler, Segment Producer -- X-Play

I’m thankful for gravy, tryptophan overload, the invention of fermented hops, my friends, and my family. But not Left 4 Dead 2 on Expert. That’s just plain mean. Screw you, jockey!!!

Brian Leahy, Previews Editor -- G4tv.com

This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for a bounty of great games that are best played with friends, competitively or cooperatively. More than ever, gaming is a social activity and whether it’s over the internet or in person, teaming up with others is the way to go. That’s why I’ll be playing Rock Band 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Modern Warfare 2, Street Fighter IV, Peggle, DJ Hero, and more with some great friends this weekend.

Eugene Morton, Interactive Producer --
Attack of the Show

I'm thankful that I wake up every day and go to a job I love with people I love even more. I always thought my adult working life would be miserable and it's better and more fulfilling than I could have ever hoped for. I'm also thankful for the friends and family that continue to put up with me despite the fact that I'm lousy at returning phone calls.

Patrick Klepek, News Editor -- G4tv.com

I'm thankful there are so many good video games these days. In general, video games are just better than ever before. Compared to other mediums, video games are so mechanically iterative that by design, video games should, as they have now, continue to become better over time, as developers learn what does and doesn't work and technology erodes every possible stumbling block for visionaries. We're never going to be completely free of bad video games (will motion control become our CGI?), but when you look at the amount of fantastic experiences available this year and what's already coming, it's hard not to say "thank you, video games."

Abbie Heppe, Editorial Manager --
X-Play

I’m thankful for my amazing friends and family who support me in my adventures and misadventures. They are truly wonderful and patient people. I’m also thankful that I still find as much joy in videogames now as I did when I was a kid and that my mom believes I’m “working” when I bring games home during the holidays.

Patrick Roche-Sowa -- Interactive Content Specialist, G4tv.com

I’m thankful for my new super-fast cable Internet connect, that should fix all the lag issues I’ve been having with Modern Warfare 2. Right?

Jason Paul, Web Developer -- G4tv.com

In today’s world, there are many things to be thankful for. Myself, I am very happy to have a job in today’s economy. I am more than fortunate to have a job that not only allows me to live a decent life but also gives me the added joy to work in an industry that I love. It is rare to be someone that works in a field that they also enjoy and I cherish that thought, even on the bad days. This job has allowed me to meet and create great friendships with various types of individuals from many different backgrounds with one great common attribute: the love of gaming. These friendships are equally, if not more important to me than any job and mean the world to me. I am also thankful for the support of my family and my “casual” -- Buzz! -- gaming girlfriend, Susana, who has supported me from the fanboy days at Ohio State to now. These are a few of the things that I think about throughout the work week that help carry me through the bad times.

Sterling McGarvey, Reviews Editor -- G4tv.com

I'm thankful for the changes in gaming we've seen in 2009. Console price drops mean that more of my friends can go multiplatform. More popular, more mainstream games mean that my family members have a better idea of what I'm talking about. I'm thankful that because the bar of entry has lowered this year, our pool of gamers grows. It's one step closer to what I'm really most thankful for: the shared experience we all have when we're in the middle of play, those endorphins kick in, and you think to yourself "this is why I play videogames." I want more people to have them.

I'm thankful that you and I share those moments, too.

Frank Meyer, Senior Interactive Producer -- G4tv.com

I am thankful for the oncoming zombie apocalypse that I am sure will happen in 2010. Why? Because finally my undead brethren will get their comeuppance and the human race will perish. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

Wade Beckett, Executive Producer -- X-Play

I'm thankful that when I wake up in the morning I'm fortunate enough to have a job where I get to make a tv show...about videogames. Yup, not too bad. I'm thankful for an amazingly well rounded show team that loves games (and movies, books, music, baking and crosswords). I'm thankful that a place like G4 exists and has let us make nearly 1,000 episodes of a crazy show we truly love ...and the fans, THANKS to all of the X-Play fans out there for their support over the years. We wouldn't have a show without you. Thanks for being part of our team.

I am thankful for the game developers for creating these massive games that are pushing the boundaries, especially Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games. Along with Dead Space for bringing back some of what Resident Evil lost. Im thankful that we are that much closer to EA losing exclusive rights to the NFL. Heavy Rain is closer than it was yesterday, HD is awesome, my controllers don't need cords, wifi, Rocko's modern life is on the PS store, and of course hands down my family... which is in the kitchen right now preparing the greatest meal of all time.

I am thankful for the juggernaut known as gaming, without thee, I would be lost. Countless hours have been spent saving the world, squashing alien invaders, and improving the attributes of my self to become bigger, faster, and stronger. Without the simple joy of blowing away those evil bad guys, I wouldn't be as happy and carefree as I am today, especially with the world in the sad state it is today.

Thank you Developers, for making the greatest experiences I have ever laid eyes upon.

    Naughty Dog for Uncharted

    Bioware for Mass Effect

    and

EA for Dead Space and Mirrors Edge. Keep up the great work EA!
