Purchasers of the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 may have to deal with the absence of custom servers, but they have one advantage: The ability to look deep into the game and discover unannounced/aborted/and otherwise secret content.

Game enthusiasts who downloaded a hack that allows for access to the developers' console for the game poked around a bit and discovered three game types:

  • Global Thermonuclear War -- The object is to  capture, then detonate a nuclear bomb.
  • One Flag -- Basic capture-the-flag: grab the banner in the middle and bring it back to your base.
  • VIP --  Defend the VIP. Or, if you’re on the other team, kill the VIP.

They are apparently playable on the Afghan and Favela maps, but haven't been played on others. They may not work for all maps.” Whether these three game-types will be included in future DLC, are abandoned content "left over" on the disc, or are clever decoys left by the programmers for some unknown reason remains to be seen.

Almost makes me wish i got this instead of Dragon Age. But the lack of a dedicated server (no mods :( ) made me say no. Still, I do like it when people discover hidden content.

Global Thermonuclear War seems left in as a play on the movie Wargames from the 80's.

Strange game, the only winning move is not to play.

I wonder if the console versions have similar locked material. My guess would be this is a way to add more playlists later on (although most games like Halo 3 seem to just change playlists all the time without the content having to be on the disk) after they have been tested more throughly. It could also be that these game types did not play out it a fair and balanced fashion so they decided to hold off on them for now until the kinks could be worked out. The only part that seems suspect is that IW apparantly had the posting removed from their site but that might also be because it contained information on how to obtain the hack neccessary to unlock the content. I don't think it is a DLC cash grab like some people in the PC community have speculated but then again what do I know :P It could always be a master plan to replace the people on our friends list with alien pods.

The reason they didnt include the nuclear war game mode is because it would cause EVEN MORE controversy... and after the airport level... no one wants that, even though it sounds like it'd be fun as hell

The only way to win Global Thermonuclear War is to challenge your PC to a game of Tic Tac Toe. Or to not play the game at all.
