Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

They say there's no business like show business, but I disagree. Like any other business might, the powers-that-be in Los Angeles seem to have noticed there is a big vidja game out right now called Modern Warfare 2, and they would like to diversify their investment portfolios into an intellectual property with a built-in fan base and cross-sector identifiability in the 15-34 year old demographic in order to fully leverage merchandising opportunities and bring in a potential windfall profit that ultimately boosts stock prices and contributes to the overall financial health of their parent corporation and its shareholders. In other words: People are talking about a Call of Duty movie. Great.

In an interview with something called PopWrap, Kevin McKidd who plays Captain "Soap" MacTavish in Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2, said of playing the role: "They were looking for a rough, Scottish actor in Hollywood they probably couldn't get Gerard Butler, so they got the No. 2 Gerard Butler, me. I had no idea it would be so huge, and now there are talks of a feature film."

Will he play Soap in the big screen version: "if the script is good, and Gerard isn't available [laughs], then absolutely."

Yeah, ha, ha, McKidd, absolutely. We all know you won't be playing Soap in a big-screen MW 2 movie. That role would go to someone more famous and less suited to it... or it will be written out of the movie entirely in favor of a wisecracking robot sidekick.

At the risk of repeating points I've made eight million times before, here's why a COD movie is a bad idea.

  1. Video game movies always suck.
  2. (Almost) all Video games are already based on tropes, characters and situations jacked from movies anyway, so a movie based on a game is really a movie based on a game based on other movies.
  3. Video game movies always suck.
  4. Modern Warfare 2 had many things to recommend it, but the story and characters are not among them. Don't get me started on the impossibly jargon-ridden dialog either.
  5. Video game movies always suck.

Here's why I predict the COD movie will happen: It doesn't matter if it sucks. People will go see it anyway, provided the marketing is on-point and there are enough promotional cups given away by 7-11, of course. You and I will get mad, but the special effects will look good, and the mall theaters will be full of rabble and Hollywood "professionals" will make money and buy themselves another solid gold island or 100 Grand bar.

I'm going to drink more coffee and fume now.

I agree with all of your points save for one tiny mistake. The Silent Hill movie was awesome.

This is a fail just waiting to happen. Yeah, it would be cool, but like you said, its something that is already based off of movies, and it really wouldn't work.

And video game movies suck......but I would still see it. "I lik hugeee esplosions and stuf"

Gerard wouldnt fit the role I think either.......Sean Connery should play Soap

But isn't the story line behind the games ABOUT war? how could it be anything BUT another war movie?

I tell you what if there is a Modern Warfare 2 Movie, here is my conditions

    1. Infinity Ward supervises the script (they don't need to write it, but they damn well better have the final say, it's their baby)

    2. Fox Doesn't Touch THE GD MOVIE (max payne was disgusting, I'll never forgive Fox for shutting down 'Payne and Redemption' the independant Max Payne movie)

    3. If ya can't think of a better storyline then the Original Game, DON'T F*ING redo the Storyline! (Again Max Payne's story line in the game is awesome, maybe a bit long and needs to be a TV Mini-Series Event, but the story the way it was was awesome. Fox basically shat in basket, gave it a crap loud of explosions, and said, 'Duh Dirrr........ Our news Company hates Video Games, so we just got you this exploding crap instead!''

    4. Uwe Boll or whatever he is, keep him on another F*ing Continent, or the Moon if possible

This is a bad idea considering that Modern Warfare 2 is essentially nothing more than one big homage to various war and action movies. Not to mention as it stands the plot just doesn't really flow, particularly the American missions where you save the two VIPs despite no indication you were going to be doing that before hand and what the significance of it was to the story. Then of course protecting the evac site of various transport vehicles only to EMP them all while they're still in range to "Win" the war on the homefront. Doesn't really make for a coherent game story let alone for a movie.

i think they should focus on making the games more cinematic instead of making a movie, use the big production of hollywood and just make the game more epic!

@Holf - Yeah but don't you think that's a reason why they shouldn't make one. I mean i hope its good, but we wont know until they make it . Right. And most likely i still check it out though.

I've been a big COD fan since the begining but I could really careless about a COD movie. It would just like every other action movie ever made.

The jargon ridden dialog makes it more authentic. That's all I have to say. I'm Oscar-mike.
