Super Mario Galaxy 2

Just because Nintendo introduced the Super Guide for New Super Mario Bros. Wii doesn't mean we should expect it in every new Nintendo game. Speaking with the Official Nintendo Magazine in the UK, designer Shigeru Miyamoto said he hasn't decided whether Super Guide, which allows players to let an A.I. take control of the on-screen action to pass difficult portions, should be in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

"Well, as far as the challenge of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is concerned," he said, "I think it's going to be a really challenging game, but whether or not we are going to incorporate the Super Guide, I just cannot tell. In general, wherever and whenever appropriate, I think we will want to incorporate that kind of thing, but I cannot commit to anything specific right now."

If it's not a technical challenge, Nintendo would be wise to include the Super Guide feature in more of its games. Becoming selective with its inclusion mean frustrating consumers who become accustomed to the hand-holding help in New Super Mario Bros. Wii might naturally expect a similar feature in Super Mario Galaxy 2. No doubt Mario's second 3D adventure on the Wii will be more difficult than New Super Mario Bros. Wii, reinforcing why the Super Guide makes even more sense.

Gaming in the future is dead. By adding Super Guide defeats the purpose of playing the game and makes playing video games more of a brainless activity. Back then there were no Super Guides so people were forced to think on their own. Now we have strategy guides and what not. with that said...

it's a pretty nice feature for when you are stumped and won't destroy your experience of playing the game.

I think you have the wrong idea there. This is great but not for the reason you'd expect. In the past games were tough, how many did you complete? These days they need to cater to hardcore and casual alike. Rather than make an easier game for them and leave us to deal with it, they can make a difficult game for us and offer this OPTIONAL assist to those who want or need it. If they chose to incorporate this feature all of a sudden I think it means good things to come for those like myself who have played for years.

For a company like Nintendo, who have to cater more to the needs of the young kid crowd, the Super Guide makes sense. It's a way for Nintendo to make a difficult game easy for a kid who might be having problems with it. For seasoned players, the Super Guide doesn't kick in until you've lost 8 lives consecutively (I think that's the number), so you shouldn't even need to use it without first completing the level on your own.

I haven't picked up NSMB Wii yet, but I don't think I'll want, or probably need, to use Super Guide. However, its inclusion doesn't bother me.

Do you remember back in the day when you were playing Metroid... the original on the NES? Do you remember exploring every nook and cranny finding missile upgrades and dead ends? Do you remember getting to that secret area that you needed the high-jump boots to get to the door, but you didn't even know the high-jump boots existed, so you tried (for at least two hours) to make the jump without the boots? Do you remember how awesome it felt, after months of exploration, endless corridor searching, backtracking and map memorization, to finally find and beat the Mother Brain?

Imagine if they had a super guide back then. That sense of accomplishment and personal triumph would not be as sweet if one existed. No my friend, you beat that monster of a game all on your own at the age of eight. You succeeded where others failed and gave up because the game was too frustrating to them. You stuck through it and had the patience and persistence to do what they could not.

Getting through a difficult game builds character. A super guide will amount to nothing more than a modern-day video game equivalent of an open-book test that can write by itself. Sure, you don't have to open the book for a challenge, but deep down inside, my hard-core, old-school master, tough-as-nails seasoned gamer is crying foul.

Its an OPTION people. No one is holding a gun to your head making you use this OPTION. Yeah, its sad that games can now play themselves/help you beat a part but its not something you have to use and that the reason it doesn't bother me.

I think the super guide only works in particular types of games. NSMB Wii is a straight-up side-scrolling linear platformer. The guide doesn't look like its going to reveal any tricks or secrets to you. It's just going to get you past the part you can't get past so that you can continue playing the game. I don't think the super guide would work in Super Mario Galaxy because of the non-linear progression of it. Or maybe it could be made available only in certain levels. Many of the original SMG levels were special levels that were supposed to be frustratingly difficult so that only the better players would beat them. Likewise, it wouldn't really work in a game like Metroid due to the different branching paths you could take, or the non-linear order in which you can do things.

I have to say that Nintendo's games are by far the easiest to figure out. That said if casual players can't figure them out then they should go back to playing bejewled and leave the consoles to the people that know how to use them. It's a real shame to take up space on the disk for a feature the is so unneeded, just for people that are lazy. What's next, making larger controllers for fat people?

Maybe they could incorporate it like a Crack in Time in that to bypass the time puzzles, you lost a certain amount of bolts. But since the Wii is more for casual players who don't care about collect points, bolts, gold coins, or fart gas would not like being penalized for using it. Once players who are concerned about collecting items, highscores or e-p-e-n-i-s measurements will care.

THe super guide isn't for hardcore gamers, how haven't you figured it out yet? It's just there for casual gamers who aren't lonely nerds spending two hours trying to complete an area in Metroid it's for people who want to have a good time for an hour before going to do regular people things. I would rather the game help them and teach them what to do than to just let them turn it off and never pick it up again. You guys are so negative it's revolting and just shows what a bunch of egotistical jerks gamers can be...

In any case, It should be in Galaxy, but I'm more worried right now that it sounds like the game won't be coming out for a while if they haven't made that decision yet. Are we looking at a holiday 08 release because I was under the impression that game could have launched this year, but they didn't want to compete with their own Mario game.

Isn't the point of games to play them? This whole super guide thing seems like a sad attempt to cash in on people's nativity. If people want to buy a game, they should want to play it. I mean, why else buy a game? And part of playing a game is being challenged. Take that away and there's really no point.

I'm fine with the Super Guide, as long as the games targeted at hardcore gamers on the PS3, PC and 360 don't adopt it.

The super guide is there as an option and will only work with specific games for example i have a brother who when he plays a game if he can't figure it out within a few minutes he quites the game and never picks it up again if this could help him figure out a game and ease him into it until he's good enough to decide he doesn't need I say bring it on
