Paul W.S. Anderson Eyes Metal Gear Solid Movie?

Fans have surely been waiting a long time for the inevitable news of a film adaptation of the Metal Gear Solid games. How, then, would those fans feel, should a name such as Paul W.S. Anderson become attached to the project? Well, it turns out that there's a chance we may find out.

Website ShockTillYouDrop was recently in Toronto on the set of the Anderson-directed Resident Evil: Afterlife and conducted a brief interview with producer (and Anderson colleague) Jeremy Bolt. In addition to updating the status of the long-discussed Castlevania film, he dropped a bit of bombshell when he stated that Anderson would like adapt Konami's Metal Gear Solid game franchise for the big screen. That is the extent of what is known on the MGS issue, but more will surely develop to clarify (or perhaps shoot down) its significance.

Do we really need to go into depth as to the why this is wrong? Some things are just so obvious, it's silly to even waste time explaining them. You don't stick a fork into a power outlet, you don't swim right after you eat, and you don't hire Paul W.S. Anderson to direct a Metal Gear film. Don't get me wrong, Anderson is not the worst director walking the planet, in fact, (as I've said in other writings,) his video game films such as the Resident Evil series and the first Mortal Kombat film are solid efforts, given the genre. His films provide a steady supply of action and excitement buttressed by a relatively stable storyline. While there's nothing intrinsically wrong with that, it is NOT how I would want to feel about a film that would have audacity to adopt the Metal Gear Solid mythos, which I (and legions of millions across the globe) find sacred. Solid Snake deserves so much better than to be placed as some fan-placating symbolic character in a prospectively over-the-top spectacle full of Woo-esque slow-motion shots.

If Anderson ends up doing a Metal Gear film, I can only hope that he's fascinated enough with Raiden to do a film focusing on him, so that someone else can tackle Snake. It can be a comedy where Raiden tries to beat up the bad guys, but always ends up naked in a locker, with a slight difficulty sitting down and walking. (Yeah, I know he came off pretty badass in MGS4, but it's still funny.)

The other recent Anderson-related tidbit revolves around the Castlevania project. When we last heard, in July, Saw co-creator James Wan was on board to direct the film, and it seemed like a lock. Anderson has been on board as a producer for the prospective film over at Rogue pictures, but it seemed like he was ceding the director's chair to Wan's vision. However, in the aforementioned interview with Jeremy Bolt, he revealed that Anderson is once again circling the project.

These are two very brief one-sentence revelations which should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm sure comments straight from the horse's mouth (and from Wan about Castlevania) will emerge soon.

    Oh... my god....I'm...I'm having a ... h...heart attack....

Well...uh... if this is it for me....the gaming populace has my solem oath... that I will do everything in my post-mortem power to... paranormally sabotage the production of this abomination if it happens.

Maybe God will even let me come back on the weekends since I'm sure he hates all of his movies too.

I seriously disagree with anyone taking a shot at making an MGS film.
Think about it logically the story is too in depth that spans 4 solid games with 2 side psp ones (not saying they are not worthy of recognition) And then someone is going to step in cut it down to 2 hours and attempt to make the characters emotionally engaging and tell a story worth the how many years this has been running ? Why can't it just be left in the context it was created and not lost in interpretation.
And on that note David Hayter is snake and anyone playing that character without that voice and recognition is not snake. Like wise with the rest of the cast of characters.

    No. No. NO. Laaaaame.

This is almost as bad as that announcement that the writer of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is writing the Shadow of the Colossus movie.

An excellent idea, it is how they make the Metal Gear Solid movie good , Kojima will have to in charge as a director telling the second director how the Metal Gear Solid movie will be created!

I do agree that playing a Metal Gear Solid game is like watching a movie .
I hope that the movie will do really good!

NO! I wanted the MGS movie to be good! IMO the Resident Evil movies went from decent (RE 1) to crap (RE: E).

Ok Personally i think theirs allot of directors capable of pulling this off as long as they work closely with the writing staff of the MGS series and keep in consideration the color and saturation of the Games the camera angles and what not i could be done in two films each about 120mins each just to get the feel for the story going and if they hit off they will have an option to film another two the games have a strong enough story line to hold a film
Im still waiting for Shigeru Miyamoto to allow filming of the Zeruda no densetsu series so it would be kool to get a MGS film in production with the write team allowing
    Thats my two cents Sorry

ya that would be a poor choice. it should be a law that if any director would like to adapt a game into a film, they should at least beat said game at least three times. or something like that idk... ah they would probably still screw it up.

First, keep Paul Anderson away from the film. He screwed up my baby Resident Evil and now he's threatening to strangle my in-lawS Castlevania and Metal Gear Solid. Look, the guy is a talented director, but he needs to stay away from video-game adaptations. I think he sees them as opportunities to make them special effects ridden with no story substance. Metal Gear is pivotal because of its story, characters, direction, and action. All these elements need to blend in and Anderson just can't go the whole 9 yards when it comes to that. I appreciated Mortal Kombat, but that's because there wasn't much of a story to begin with and the action was great for its time.

Oh and I'm just throwing it out there, you can bat it back, or just swat it to the ground, but Eric Bana for Solid Snake. (Think of him in Black Hawk Down) -- he can pull it off.

If they're going to have any "Paul Anderson," they need Paul Thomas Anderson to direct it. There Will Be Metal Gears!!

Please guys, dont encourage this crap! Allow MGS to keep it's pride as the best tactical espionage game ever made. Making a spin off on the 360 was already an insult for us fans (i dont hate the 360, i just think it cant handle a MGS games like the Playsation can.I feel the same way for FFXIII but that's another story).

Movies made in the likeness of video games have a terrible track record aside from the Resident Evil trilogy (the best of the worst). I grew tired of the Metal Gear movies in the game so live action movie could not possibly be worth the 2 1/2 hour run time minimum it will require!

To all MGS fans: Be prepared to have Snake turned into a woman and played by the talentless Milla Jovovich.
