Multi-console Owners Favoring PS3 Over Xbox 360 For Major Sequels?

Let’s say you own a copy of either Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and/or Assassin’s Creed on either the PlayStation 3 and/or the Xbox 360. With the impeding releases of highly anticipated sequels to both titles, it appears that you have a rather difficult decision to make, namely: Which version of said sequel are you going to buy?

The reason I ask is that OTX’s GamePlan Insights recently told Gamasutra that a surprising percentage of gamers who purchased COD4 and/or AC for the Xbox 360 have said they plan to buy PS3 versions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and/or Assassin's Creed II, respectively. Fifteen-percent of gamers who own a 360 copy of AC said they will be picking up a PS3 copy of its sequel, while just 7 percent who own a PS3 copy plan to buy the sequel for the 360.

OTX didn’t provide any figures with regards to Modern Warfare 2, but OTX said the percentages were similar to those for ACII. In light of this data, analyst Nick Williams believes, “The PS3 seems poised to shift the ratio of Xbox 360 to PS3 sales for most major multi-platform releases in its favor among dual owners.”

The fact that there are more PS3’s in living rooms now compared to when the first installments in these franchises were released might account for the MW2 shift, given the game’s significant multiplayer component. But Assassin’s Creed II is single-player only, so what could be causing so many gamers to choose the PS3 version over the 360 version?

It might very well be that gamers who didn’t want to shell out the cash for a PS3 two years ago decided to pick up a 360, and then when AC and COD4 came out, those were two massive games, so they bought them. But now, thanks to the price drop, those people who originally wanted a PS3 have been able to buy one, and buying games for your shiny new system is a commonly held attitude.

From a more industry-based perspective, the shift could be attributed to the way ACII was presented at this year’s E3, and the way the game has/will be marketed. During E3, Ubisoft used Microsoft’s press conference to show off Splinter Cell: Conviction, while it used Sony's press conference to showcase ACII. It’s hard to say exactly what kind of impact this had on gamers’ perceptions of ACII, it would be unwise to think it hasn’t influenced some percentage of gamers who paid close attention to the biggest gaming event of the year. Also, as GamesIndustry.biz reports, Ubisoft has revealed that it made a marketing deal with Sony earlier this year to have television ads for ACII feature only the PlayStation 3 logo. Given the surge in the number of PS3’s flying off store shelves these days, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that we'll be seeing more and more ads for multi-platform games flashing the PS3 logo at the end of them moving forward.

Ultimately though, with the hard data concerning those 15 percent and 7 percent of gamers that OTX’s research highlights, it’s hard to say just how significant or widespread this shift from one console version of a game to another really is. However, if it is happening as frequently as this data suggests, then perhaps we’ll be finding out much more about it very soon.

What’s your take on all of this? Are you one of those people who are picking up a PS3 version of one of these games over the 360 version? Why the change? And if you can refrain from dragging this discussion into mindless fanboy-crazed territory, you’ll get 107 gold stars.

I am getting COD for my 360.. Gameflying Assassin's creed for the PS3.. most of my gamer friends are on 360.. hardly see anyone of my friends on PS3..

Most of the games are identical from what I have seen so it all depends on the multiplayer for me and most of my online friends are on 360's.. even the guys that have both systems tend to play their 360's more.. Several of them actually got mad at me that I suggested getting COD4 for my PS3.

ya..i have both xbox and ps3, no difference in grafx, but i would rather have a blu ray disc which has scratch protection than a dvd disc that would damage data.

Well, as far as this page is refreshed, ill be the first to confess, i got the first 2 on the 360, and though i just recently purchased a ps3 slim, ill be getting the sequels, along with the majority of other games, on the 360 because of my gamerscore lol. Personally i dont care what system i play them on, as long as it gets played, but im an achievement whore, so ill get em on the 360 lol

Sorry - 360 gets all my multi-platform games for several reasons, the biggest two being xbl and the controller. Oh yeah - the load/update times too.

I prefer to pick my multiplatform games the democratic way:

    With a coin flip.

No, seriously. Between nearing Trophy Level 8 and a Gamerscore of 20000, I don't really sweat Achievements or Trophies anymore as a determiner of whether I'll buy a game.

Unless I'm reviewing it, in which case, there are more determining factors, like what version shows up from the publisher.

IDK, I picked up Arkham Asylum for the PS3 and I was missing the 360 all the time (I'm not an achivement wh*re but I got a lot of trophies I'd rather see as Gamerscore).

Also for MW2 I'd rather use XBL.

anything shooter related, xbox for sure, because the ps controller sucks for such a thing imo.

anything that will probably cause fps lag at least once during the game, ps3 cause im less likely to experience said fps lag

    anything thats graphically awesome, ps3

fighters, xbox cause i have my stick for my xbox

I'm sure that the people who bought a PS3 slim are looking at ways to build up their PS3 libraries and buying the sequels of the games that they know and love are a safe way to do so.

I, for one, think that one of the worst aspects of owning all the gaming consoles is the hair-splitting decisions of what console you will buy a multi-platform game on. I am such an indecisive person and I lamented choosing a game between the original Xbox and PS2 back in the day. I would literally spend over ten minutes with the two versions of the game in my hand staring and them intently as if one of them would respond "pick me!" Ultimately my girlfriend (at the time) wanted to drag my ass out of the game store and go shoe shopping so she grabbed one of the games from my hand at random, put the other one back on the shelf and had me pay for it at the counter. To this day, I'll always wonder what it would have felt like to play "Black" with a Dual Shock in my hands.

To each his own, I guess.

    -M

P.S.- Now that I think about it, how the hell can she spend half an hour going back and forth between (what looks like) an identical pair of red leather pumps, but I can t spend more than sixty seconds deciding between an Xbox or a Playstation game?

I am starting to buy games stuff for my PS3 now just so i can support Sony because i have a feeling they have a better idea of what longevity means... look at PS2. I mean i love Xbox, but its really not what it used to be in my eyes.

Well speaking as someone who bought both for the 360... I plan to get both of the sequals for my PS3. More of my friends have purchased a PS3 and so multiplayer is now prefered due to free access plus my friends will actually be on thier PS3's now and single player really just has to do with my prefence in system having changed. I always prefered my PS3 for media but the 360 for gaming but lately really starting with Killzone 2 and Infamous my preference has shifted and I don't really use my 360 anymore except for exclusives.

I get most multiplatform games on 360 because all of my friends only have 360s. When it comes to shooters though, the 360 just has a much better controller because it has concave triggers and thumbsticks. I think even when it comes to exclusives, the 360 is better for multiplayer gaming and the PS3 is better for solo gaming, and I kind of treat multiplatform games the same way.

I'm not paying for XBL anymore and buying a extra game each year with the savings.
    So... COD & BF:BC2 on PS3

This article is just asking to start a flame war.

Anyways, the first of my multi-platform consoles was the 360, causing my friends list to be larger on it, so I just get multi-platform games for it. I usually only get PS3 exclusives for my PS3.

That being said, They're both great consoles. I'm not going to say that one system is better than the other at something different, because that really boils down to opinion. I play both of them equally, and I love them both to death. It bums me to see all the flame wars that occur for either system, because there's just so much to love about each console. All in all, I think this generation has been some of the best for gaming, and I can only look forward to what's up ahead.

If my friend has a game for 360 that I have for PS3, I'll bring my PS3 over to his house to play it because
    1. The controller is more comfortable; 360's is bulky and they're always running out of batteries
    2. PSN has always given me the least lag

Interesting, as a ps3&360 owner I preordered cod 6 (get over it) on 360 when I had 4 on ps3, and I was thinking about getting AC2 on ps3 just cause it doesn't have online and I have the first for ps3.
