Infinity Ward "Doesn't Feel Tied" To Call Of Duty Franchise Forever

Call of Duty was released in 2003. Infinity Ward has been making new entries in the Call of Duty series ever since, but the studio told Develop it doesn't feel obligated to continue making new entries in the Call of Duty franchise. That doesn't mean we won't see further Call of Duty games from Infinity Ward, but there's no guarantee the company will keep making them, either.

"We take it game-by-game," explained Infinity Ward community manager and headline maker Robert Bowling. "We never worry about the future too much. Right now we wanted to make a sequel, so the entire team is hands on deck for making Modern Warfare 2. Then once this is done, maybe we’ll see about doing something new. If we do want to do something else, then we will do it. We don’t feel tied to making Call of Duty games. We still make Call of Duty games because we’re having fun doing it. And when it stops being fun, we’ll move onto something else."

Infinity Ward has denied the long-rumored sci-fi shooter the developer was said to be working on, but I gotta admit: I'd really love to see a hard sci-fi shooter from them. But given the amount of passion being poured into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, if Infinity Ward can continue to push my buttons, I don't have a problem with them remaining there, either.

C'mon, though. Sci-fi would be pretty rad.

Looks to me like Treyarch will be taking over the Call of Duty games. They're making Call of Duty Vietnam as we speak.

I would like them to try something new. I love COD and I have since the original but I would like to see what else they can do because they are a really talented team.

I'm pretty sure you are in the minority on that. Personally, I hated COD3 and it made me hate Treyarch. Once Treyarch released W@W I finally stopped hating them. I still think IW is way better but Treyarch proved that they could add something to the franchise(nade throwback in COD3, Nazi Zombies and a pretty good campaign in W@W) even though their mp was super glitchy and it was basicly a reskin of MW.

They probably will make at least MW3 since they talked about how its a seperate branch of COD, and they wouldn't do that for one game. If they thought about dropping the COD name from the cover, obviously they had future plans for Modern Warfare.
Maybe IW could do Battlefront 3, because apparently people think that its more important to make one for the DS and PSP when they got the last one. IW and Lucasarts? Would be the deadliest thing ever

If they do stray from Call of Duty, I would like to see their next series have a type of multiplayer on par or better than the COD multiplayer.

No offence to Treyarch, but I just don't like their Call of Duty's as much. It would be a bit sad to see them take over completely. I mean, when are they going to hop off WWII games? Sure, WaW 2 is supposed to be based on the Vietnamese war, but still. Oh well. That makes two companies not sure about their series that are my favorites: IW and Bethesda. IW takes the title of Modern Warfare, Treyarch takes the title of World at War. Both would be branded with Call of Duty, only loosely however.

I think that would be a good thing.

They wsay they would like to try something new, but I really doubt they will. Call of Duty is their bread and butter and Activision will continue to give them tons of money to milk the CoD franchise to death. There is only one thing anyone in the game business seems to understand and that is $$$$$.

Infinity Ward would make a killer sci-fi shooter. I can imagine something like a cross between Call of Duty, Battlefield 2142, and Killzone 1/2, but batcrap crazy.

All I recommend they do is drop the Call of Duty moniker for it for obvious reasons.

The fact that waw even had call of duty in the title is an insult to the franchise. That game is so half assed in so many ways it was a big let down. I think iw's got a good thing going here, its futuristic enough and frankly im not ready for lasers. Its still something new theyd been on WWII forever and this is only the second modern warfare. However it would be nice to see a super sci fi game that makes sense and has a good story as opposed to the last two halos. (not including odst because i havent played that)

Here is how I see it, if IW has the confidence to Stretch further beyond their wildly popular series that is Call of Duty then they should go for it. Infinity Ward is big enough to make another series, I think. If they wanna make a Devil May Cryish type game(Hack slash) they should give it a go. I mean if they take a break from CoD are their fans gonna say? "Screw you IW." I doubt it, then they're not fans of IW just of CoD. But Yes I am all for a Sci-fi Call of Duty or something else.

Whatever gets them away from Activision would make me happy. MW2 is the only Activision title I buy because of IW. I don't really think we need another Sci-Fi shooter. Future Warfare would be cool though.

what's the deal with video game companys making something successful and popular, and then saying, "we don't need to keep making these games" Sure they want to branch on and make other kinds of games and that's fine, but don't abandon your fans.
