These days, everyone's off about haunted bedrooms and alien abductions, but did we forget about a particular famous witch?
With a domestic total of nearly $85 million only a few weeks after its wide release, dominating the Saw franchise, and even just this week, coming in just under $5 million shy of spoiling the #1 spot debut of Michael Jackson's This Is It, the power of low budget buzz movie Paranormal Activity is undeniable. However, about this time 10 years ago, everyone was in awe of another low-budget project's rise to dominance, which would eventually set a place for itself in pop culture history. That film, of course, was The Blair Witch Project. Shot with a set of handcams with some unknowns on shoestring budget, the sleeper hit of all sleeper hits would eventually yield over $249 million (worldwide) at the box-office. With the recent success of Paranormal Activity, one may wonder if a fire may have been lit under the long-dormant Blair Witch franchise. It appears that it may have happened.
Co-Writer and Co-Director of the 1999 phenom (partnered with Daniel Myrick,) Eduardo Sanchez recently commented on the possibility of a new chapter in the Blair Witch franchise. The duo initially spent a number of years evading the possibility of returning to their franchise, even passing on involvement in the conventional, big-budget sequel, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2. (Good call on that move, btw.) After spending the ensuing years sporadically on various low-key horror/sci-fi projects, it seems that Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity may have inspired the calling to resurrect this franchise. According to Sanchez:
"We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now. It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it."
The film would prospectively be a sequel, which would not acknowledge the events of Blair Witch 2 (which were anticlimactic, to say the least.) Original cast members, Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, would also be pursued for roles of some kind in Blair Witch 3. However, the film will attempt to avoid regurgitating what was done in the groundbreaking first film. While laughing at subsequent films which utilized Blair Witch's signature "shakycam" style like Cloverfield, Sanchez also acknowledges that audiences may be disappointed if it does not return. When gauging the crowd at a recent Screenwriter's Festival in LA, Sanchez comments:
"I asked the crowd, `Who would be turned off by that?' And nobody raised their hand. Then I said, `Who wants to see more shakycam?' And everybody raised their hands. We might have a problem here. We still haven't really decided yet, but instinct-wise it seems that doing the same thing would probably be a mistake."
Therefore, I wouldn't expect the Sanchez/Myrick duo to attempt reinventing the wheel all that much.
I suppose the real mystery lies in where they want to go with the story. If indeed the characters of the original cast (who we could have concluded were either missing or dead) do return, then in what capacity would it occur? Maybe the permise of the film could center on their mysterious resurfacing 16-17 years after the footage of their ordeal was found. (Seeing as the "ordeal" in the film took place in 1994.)
Either way, it sounds intriguing.

Blair Witch sucked. I remember being like 12 years old when it came out and everyone saying it was soooo scary and that it was a "true" story. I watched the movie and was incredibly bored, never got scared and I never even believed it was a true story. A sequel to Blair Witch is about as interesting to me as watching paint dry.

Horrible movies. I could never get past the first 10 minutes, so if you like being bored and feeling sick from crappy shakycam, Blair Witch is for you! The shakycam fad needs to end already.

I didn't like the Blair Witch Project, but I enjoyed Paranormal Activity. Maybe with another shot they can make a movie that is actually scary?
I personally enjoy the "shakycam" effect, when done effectively, and don't have problems with vertigo or dizziness when watching movies such as Cloverfield or Paranormal Activity. For those like babyscottback that don't like it, don't watch the movie. Simple.
Sawblood45
To me Paranormal Activity was like blair witch 1 with a blair witch 2 ending. Thought it was meh, the only parts that creeped me out were: SPOILERS i guess: the first night with the foot steps, and the girl screaming towards the end...
...other than that, I thought it was a little too long and way too overhyped. After watching this for some reason Open Water came to mind, and that means I wasted time.

I, for one, liked the first blair whitch movie! and would be pleassed to see it come back.

Blair Witch sucked. Haven't seen Paranormal Activity, though, but Blair Witch couldn't scare me as a child (who would've been scared of the darkness at night) and the me back then knew it was just a novelty camcorder movie that was just too lenient on the f-word.
Looking forward to seeing Paranormal Activity, however.

The Blair Witch franchise died because of that horrid sequel. I actually like the first one, but on a cult-status, and I don't consider The Secret of Esrever to even have any realtionship to it. It was a movie that was trying to ride the coat tails of the first movie's success.
The Scooby Doo Project (a direct parody), was actually more enjoyable than finding out that the sequel, The Secret of Esrever was "reverse" spelled backwards. Oooo, spooky!

If they make another Blair Witch movie I won't watch it

The first one, honestly, sucked. It was a waste of two hours. The only good part was the end, as that was kind of scary. The rest was just f-bombs and drama that wasn't scary or even remotely creepy. If they do make a new one, it better be good.
rrodmicroshaft
was i the only one who almost fell asleep watching parinormal activity that movie was not scary

I actually liked the first Blair Witch. Nonetheless, I don't think that it was something that needs an actual "franchise" attached to it.
Some producers, especially of independent films, need to learn to stop at one (City Slickers, The Matrix, Friday, Donnie Darko, etc).

I agree with cha0sRe1gns. Just stop at one. But then again, someone might come along and improve the formula... It could happen I think.

But if there was no Blair Witch 2, I might not have Burn Notice.
