Nintendo Unveils New DS: The DSi LL

Another tweak to the DS is coming to Japan next month, sporting a larger screen, stylus and pre-installed DSiWare software. It's coming here, too. Nintendo of America has confirmed this new DS, to be called Nintendo DSi LL in Japan and Nintendo DSi XL in North America and Europe, will arrive sometime in the first quarter of 2010 (sometime in January, February or March).

The company released a brief official statement to me about the announcement:

“A new iteration of the Nintendo DSi system will be introduced in Japan on November 21, 2009. To be known as Nintendo DSi LL in Japan, and as Nintendo DSi XL in North America and Europe, it will offer a screen 93% larger than the current Nintendo DS Lite with a better view angle, an additional longer touch screen stylus, and pre-installed Nintendo DSiWare software. The new version will arrive in North America and Europe in the first quarter of calendar year 2010.”

I still haven't picked up a DSi, but the lack of access to DSiWare continues to bug me. It's unclear whether the larger screens will prove useful for a youngster such as myself (as the new DS is aimed at older audiences), but perhaps this will drive down the price of the DSi a bit.

So... how many DS console variations will this make now? 4? Why, exactly?

Sony Goes smaller while nintendo goes bigger....wow lol, i personally like objects being smaller and lighter, and i don't see the point of giving the DS a bigger screen when the graphics on it already don't look good even on a small screen. The bigger screen will just enhance ur perseption on how bad DS games graphics really are. lol (btw im not saying the psp game graphics are tons better, but they are an improvement)

So, it went from big and clunky, to small and sleek, to small, sleek, with a camera but no GBA slot, to big again? Does it get its GBA slot back? You know some games actually used that... God, I don't know what these guys are doing.

    Why Nintendo?!?!

I'll admit, it looks good but I'm slightly annoyed. This is the fourth DS iterration to come out - the original, Lite, and DSi - and the latter most DSi was just released earlier this year. I was pondering whether to upgrade from my DS to a DSi but now I"m compelled to wait till next year for this.

On the other hand, that is a big screen. Hopefully that will translate into a better gaming experience especially with DSi exclusives (like Ghostwire).

I've not bought a DSi yet but I think I'll get it over this newer version. The bigger screen is cool but I think it'll be significantly bigger and clunky. Just my opinion.

Nintendo is slowly sabotaging itself. People won't buy the same hardware forever (albeit with very minor changes), and they aren't doing much in the games department. They're going to come crashing down, and they won't have any clue what happened. Nintendo is slowly becoming the hardware version of Activision.

WOW JUST SHUT UP CRY BABIES.....awww Nintendo and Activision keeps coming out with software and games after games, I would too if people kept buying my products and wanting more!!! If you don't like it don't buy it, if you don't have enough money and mad that you can't have the latest tech. then suck it up it's okay you just won't be the nerdiest of them all

I don't see the appeal in a fat DS. I think it's Japan's way of saying, "Hey America, you're all fat, so we're gonna market a DS to match you fatness." I think there should be a limit to how small gadgets get (iPod, I'm talkin' to you), but this seems a bit pointless. Like someone mentioned above, the DS's graphics don't really warrant a larger screen. It just doesn't seem necessary. It's like if they had put out the gameboy pocket before the original gameboy. Why?

At least the psp go has 16gb of memory to justify its price!

If only the amount of color displayed was increased as well then this will be worth it!

The 4.25" screen is nice, but I still think it's not big enough for internet browsing ... and it doesn't support my Reclusa keyboard so ... I'll pass.
