Happy birthday to the PlayStation 2. The undisputed champion of the last console war has turned nine years old today -- ancient, by video game standards.
According to Sony, one in every three U.S. households own a PlayStation 2, and nearly 140 million people around the world enjoy the system, making it among the most successful game systems ever. Plus, they're still making games for it! In case you missed the last decade, you can still pick up a PS2 Slim for only $99. Bonus: you'll be able to get older PlayStation 2 games for crazy cheap through used game retailers everywhere. There are currently over 10,000 titles available for the system.
I'm not the nostalgic type when it comes to older game systems, so my PS2 is currently on the top shelf of my closet, awaiting that fateful day when I either throw it out or bring it to a thrift store. What about you? Are you still rocking you PlayStation 2? What's the best game for the system, overall?

Happy birthday PS2. Here's to the PS3 going just as long. I have a B/C PS3, so no need for my PS2. I gave it to my son.

That is pretty impressive how strong the PS2 has been around. I did think it will do good and it does, it is pretty cool.
I don't have a PS2 anymore, not really. And why not, with the PS3 around, everyone wants to get a piece of the action. PS3 is pretty much the future and the PS2 is the past. But I do think it can make a great gift for a new person in the gaming universe.
There's a lot of cool PS2 games that I could think of but come on! God Of War is just the best there is. That's the consensus face as of now and I think so. I don't think you can go wrong with any one, 1 or 2. Part 3 just validates the series and the adventure that will lead to in the PS3.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PS2
I have the original PS2 (the fat one as some people call it) and its 9 years old too. Still works, hope my PS3 last just as long.

I went through four In 2 years. The first two overheated and shorted out and the third just caught on fire. Would I do it all over again? Damn straight! Actually on my fifth. My son at age 4 thought that it could play 5 DVD's at the same time. And that was right before GoW2 came out.

I have a PS3 but my sister refuses to give up her PS2 so i still play a game or two on it.

I had gotten rid of my ps2 way back when the ps3 emerged...but just recently bought the slim version of the ps2. the games are still hot. I bought component cables for the ps2 and it looks great on my hd tv set. Amazing, that i can buy like 8 or 10 used ps2 games for the price of one ps3 title.

I would say that Grand Theft Auto is the franchise that resonates w/me as putting the PS2 ahead of everyone last generation. Disclaimer: Never had a ps2 myself though my oldest son did for awhile.

I still play my ps2 sometimes and it never failed me once

@ Stephen Johnson;
Why you want to throw out a console that etched its place in history as the best ever?
I will take it you're either joking or you kept it in a bad condition now that you have a PS3.
Anyways, GOW 2 is the best PS2 game in my book.
HAPPY (9th) BIRTHDAY PLAYSTATION 2!!!!! You aged like fine wine; still a beauty to behold.

It's between the PS2 and the SNES as the greatest console ever made. My vote goes to the PS2.

I sold my PS2 on January 16, 2008 in preparation for the purchase of my PS3. We had some good times... Anybody else remember "Enter the Matrix"?

I still have my ps2 as backup. If anything happens and my ps3 has to go for repairs, then I am whipping out my ps2. Plus it was such a good system, one of the originals, never had a problem, giving it away or selling it, just wouldn't feel right.

best game console i had!

Man. I got my PS2 in 2002. I remember my first games were Twisted Metal Black ,Onimusha, and Devil May Cry too, I think. Worked and saved like a dog for the system. It was so worth it. It's still purring like a kitten, along with my PSX, Super NES and NES.
I even still have my Sega Saturn for some reason. But the PS2 will remain my top console after the Super NES forever.

Wow...What is that, like 98 in console years? It's hard to believe you can still buy new ones in stores. I'd actualy get one myself, now that the PS3 slim isn't backwards compatible, if it wasn't for $100 pricetag (Still?!). What PSN needs to do is offer direct downloads of popular PS2 games in addition to PS1. (If they don't already, I'm not as familiar with PSN as I should be.) PS3 is on my holiday wish list, but I'd rather have a fat for the backwards compatibility. Too bad I can't find a reasonably priced one on the net, not that I've looked very hard.

I only ever had one PS2 and I think it lasted 8 years before I got the PS3. It was such a great console, had so many games to choose from. I only had one moment in where I was tempted to throw it out the window. Does anyone remember a holiday demo disc one year with the viewtiful joe demo that wiped out your memory card after 5-10 mins of playing the demo? I had both memory cards plugged in, and I lost all 5 of my FFX files. Other than that I can't say one bad thing about. I got a 60GB PS3 so no need for a PS2. I would have to say my favorite game was FFX and FFXII, some of the best stories and experiences I ever had. Congratulations to Sony for being able to keep a 9 year old system in the market.

The good ole' PS2 how I loved you
I do not own a PS3 currently, hopefully I'll have one come Christmas
I've got a few 360's here and there (some broke and what not)
But we have two PS2's around my household and yes they are used everyday, I still go back and play the Metal Gear games, Ratchet and Clank and what not. And I can honestly say, lately I have really wanted a PS3 just to play the latest of those games.
Happy B'day old pal, thanks for the many hours of my childhood spent killing stuff!!
