Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time Getting Two Demos

No one really doubts that the PlayStation 3 has the technological horsepower to create mind-blowing interactive experiences for years to come. But to truly start to appreciate that power, you need games like Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Insomniac Games’ Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time to come along and show you what the console is actually capable of creating.

And luckily for us, the PS3 is still a few years away from leveling off in the power department; that is, according to Insomniac’s senior community manager James Stevenson. As CVG reports, Stevenson recently spoke about the PS3’s potential going forward, saying, "There's always ways we can become more efficient. The PlayStation platforms are built with a very high ceiling and I think that's part of the success Sony has had in creating these platforms with really long life spans.”

Stevenson goes on to say that developers usually spend the first few years of a new console generation getting comfortable with the technology, and that now, the PS3 “is finally hitting its prime.” As for the console’s future, Stevenson said that he believes it will two or three years before the PS3 is maxed out.

“We're using all of the PS3 right now, but you can always be more efficient in the way you use it,” Stevenson concluded.

Efficiency is clearly going to be the key to the PS3’s longevity, as evidenced by comments made by Naughty Dog back in August when the developer talked about having tapped out Blu-ray's storage capacity on Uncharted 2. Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig also told GameTrailers during this year’s PAX that the developer had “maxed [the PS3] out” with its latest critical smash hit as well. Clearly, developers have quite a task ahead of them.

Of course, if the last few years of the PS2 taught us anything, it’s that the end of a console’s lifecycle typically produces some of that generation’s most memorable and stunning games. There’s absolutely no reason to think it will be different this time around.

Or is there?

That doesn't seem long enough to me. I really hope we get an Uncharted 3 before the end of this console genreation.

Thing is, the quality G4 is talking about is generally only capable on exclusives. If its multiplatform then the game will be held back by its 360 limitations and the company wanting equality across the board as far as quality goes. There are of course a select few who will actually strive for the best possible product on PS3 regardless of its 360 limitations. I only hope Konami and Square Enix are one of these example companies who will not let the PS3 version suffer due to the 360.

once they release the next sony console they will probly need a couple of big titles for release, it would be cool if they got naughty dog to make uncharted 3 for the next console. Don't get me wrong i want to see the next uncharted as soon as possible but imagine what it would be on their next console.

i am sure the Xbox 360 would have better graphics but the space on the disks hold it back. I guess theres always the next system. Good for you PS3, disk space made you have a better overall system.

I can't even begin to wrap my head around what the next generation of consoles would be able to do.
I'm glad to hear this being said by a well respected and successful developer. It simply gives us more reassurance (like we need more) that the PS3 will deliver the bang for our bucks.

I agree with grunto, that the best games are the exclusives. Multiplatform games on ps3 are subpar compared to their 360 couterparts because of the difficulty of developing for multiple consoles.

Good news, but I think it's news owners of PS3s already knew. Once more developer stop being lazy (Value, cough cough) or work on the PS3 first, there will be more widespread acknowledgement of this.

Jay, because you can't upgrade your console hardware every few months like you can with a PC. New graphics card and hardware devices are released for PCs every few months that are leaps and bounds better than their predeccesors. While that sounds good and all...it's actually very frustrating and expensive for PC gamers to keep up with.

That being said, I don't think you want your consoles to have PC capabilities. Unless you're filthy rich with more money than you know what to do with.

I like this news. I got a PS3 in June and I'm glad to hear that I won't really need to buy a PS4 in a another year or so. But about that Xbox 360...
