Army of Two

If you don't pre-order Army of Two II: The 40th Day before it's released on January 12th, you won't be able to access the game's four-player co-op mode, Extraction (a gametype best compared to Firefight or Horde). The mode will be unlocked for all users a month later, February 12th. A gamer interested in Army of Two II could theoretically pick up the sequel on the first day of release, yet be prevented from accessing a chunk of the multiplayer until the lock expired four weeks later.

To understand why EA chose this type of pre-order incentive, I quizzed an Electronic Arts spokesperson over e-mail late last week. EA positioned Extraction as a multiplayer mode that wouldn't otherwise exist unless it developed as a pre-order incentive.

"We are not locking Extraction – we are offering extra content which was originally not part of the game as a bonus to our dedicated community after launch," explained the spokesperson. "We decided to make it available earlier, at launch, for those who pre-ordered the game. This game mode was actually developed as an extra, bonus game mode and so there is nothing we are taking away from players. And it will be available for free to everyone 30 days after launch (Feb 12)."

If you pre-order Army of Two II, retailers will provide you with a code unlocking Extraction. According to EA, there will be no method of unlocking Extraction unless you pre-order prior to its release date.

"All users will get the Extraction bonus mode for free one month after launch, even if they did not pre-order it," said the spokesperson.

I think EA marketed Extraction wrong. If it were exclusive DLC instead of being something already on the disc, I think that people would be a little more welcoming. Locking content that's on the disc is just not a good way to get gamers to like your company.

The whole idea of exclusive, game-play/mechanic altering (i.e. not purely aesthetic), content being restricted to specific purchasing conditions is one of the worst things to happen to video games in a long time.

I'm glad that EA is at least making the content available to everyone at a specific date past release, which is more than can be said for what the GameStop/Developer partnerships are doing. Two people pay the same amount of money for a game, but only one of the two will get the complete experience because he/she bought it at a specific place at a specific time. If that's where the industry is headed, count me out.

All of this exclusivity and "Pre-Order now and get more crap" is stupid as hell. The reason they gave for this is absolute bull crap. If this was not meant to be part of the game, they would not have made it. They made it purely to get people to pre-order it and assure they will get the sales they want. Exclusivity of major gameplay elements to consoles/regions/pre-orderers/ etc is ridiculous. It started recently with Fallout 3 and Xbox only DLC, and with EA making over half of the Sims 3 content available purchase in their online store not more than a couple of DAYS after the release of the game. Also, Gamestop and it's numerous deals with developers is stupid. Pre-Order MAG and get the beta? How about let us have a demo before we become committed to the game for crying out loud. Like dropslash, if this is the way the market is heading, then at least it had a good run.

The whole idea of exclusive, game-play/mechanic altering content being restricted to specific purchasing conditions is one of the worst things to happen to video games period.I myself like the game Army of two, so it is not a good idea for all the extra stuff a gamer needs to go through just to unlock bonuses?! Why should I go through all that just to buy the squeal!!!

Attract new players hell. I won't buy it specifically for that reason. I also won't be buying any more of their games period. I expect get the entire game when I pay full price no matter how I or when I buy it.
