Updated: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Features Third-Person Multiplayer Mode?

Remember how “surprised” we all were when the newest trailer for Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 revealed that at least some portions of the game will take place in a bombed-out Washington D.C.? Well, depending on how you feel about MW multiplayer, this latest rumor/kind of confirmed revelation might just headshot your surprise zone: Modern Warfare 2 seems to include a third-person multiplayer mode.

Over the weekend, gaming site Kombo posted a video that showed several MW2 multiplayer matches being played from a third-person perspective. Shortly thereafter, a screenshot of multiplayer game modes popped up, which included a mode called "3rd person team deathmatch." While Activision has yet to official confirm the mode, IW’s community manager Robert Bowling (aka fourtwozero) posted the following to his Twitter account yesterday: "Just an FYI, if you're wanting a spoiler free and pure Modern Warfare 2 experience, now would be a good time for a media blackout."

This could all be part of some elaborate ruse on Activision’s part, so until we hear something more official, don’t place any bets just yet. Although, in the meantime, it is probably worth discussing what this move to the third-person might represent for IW should it end up being true. Is this an attempt to attract Gears of War and SOCOM fans? Are there gamers who only play third-person multiplayer games, and if there are, is a single multiplayer mode really going to be enough to persuade them to buy a game they might otherwise have avoided, since the game is a first-person shooter 99.95 percent of the time?

Lots of questions, folks. So have at it.

Update: According to Joystiq, Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling has confirmed that Modern Warfare 2 will in fact include a third-person multiplayer mode. However, the mode will only be available in private matches (toggled like Hardcore settings) or in third-person designated playlists, and everyone in the matches will have to play in the third-person perspective. So there you have it. Let the third-person vs. first-person multiplayer debate commence.

I love first person shooters, but ever since the 3rd person mutator was released for Unreal Tournament III I've found that the gameplay can work just as well from over the shoulder. I'd be glad to see the option to play in 3rd person at times in MW2. Sometimes it's cool to see your character on-screen, especially if it's customizable.

I can see it becoming like Battlefront where you could switch betweene first and third person view at will, personaly i dont like 3rd person but if people want to play like that let them

The GRAW series were my 2 favorite multiplayer 360 games. CoD is a little too fast for a good 3rd person game. SOCOM and GRAW worked because they were more tactical. People in CoD just run around and shoot people. I don't think it'll work well, unless it's in hardcore mode, and they change some rules.

They perfected the FPS game with MW1. As long as it is just one of the many game types in MW2, that's fine. I just won't play it. Domination FTW!!!

This would be sweet. I've always hated the first person perspective. It's extrememly limiting and it allows the developers to be lazy on character animations.

That would be a terrible third-person view.

1. The camera, when not aiming, is way too far away.

2. When not aiming, it's a top-down perspective.

3. The reticule is in a very odd place.

All of that coupled with the fact that it would allegedly be a separate game mode makes me believe/hope that this is fake.

If Modern Warfare 2 is going to have some 3rd Person gaming it might get some attention but not a whole lot.All Call Of Duty games have been FPS,why change now? COD 4 Modern Warfare sold great just as a standard FPS I'm thinking MW2 will do the same thing unless people are just bored with playing video games since Modern Warfare two years ago.One things for sure I'm getting Modern Warfare 2.

This could just be a theatre mode just like in halo 3. Maybe the IW developer's were bummed that they only had a killcam mode which only showed you dying, and from there they decided to go the whole nine yards and put in a theatre mode. Many people would enjoy this because you will be able to see your awesome double headshot with one bullet! or your 5-kill's with a grenade. Also it might just be the known spectator mode, but i seriously doubt that because only one person was in the game lobby therefore meaning he can't spectate himself, but there will always be a spectator mode. The idea of being able to see your person it third person will have many flaws and this would make it a bad idea due too not knowing where to shoot, and trust me many of these videos show people that can't aim quite well at all, just imagine these people with a third person view. I do not doubt that IW developers would throw in a third person view, but they would need to have a reticle for aiming just like in 1st person view.
