The Joker

I (finally!) finished Batman: Arkham Asylum over the weekend. It’s the best game about Batman since 1986’s Batman, in other words, ever. I’m not going to spoil AA’s  ending, but it is a very awesome conclusion, in the true sense of the word… but then, so is the beginning. You know why this game inspires so much awe? The Joker. The Joker is such a terrifying but endearing bad guy, it got me thinking about video game nemeses in general and what makes a great game villain.

As in any kind of story-telling, you can’t have a hero without an enemy– The “goodness” of the good guy only works if the “badness” of the bad guy is in balance -- Think Ishmael and the Great White Whale, Tom and Jerry, God and Satan. That’s why Darth Vader is so much better than Darth Maul – Vader’s single-minded obsession with  destroying the rebellion was terrifying enough -- dude would blow up planets for no reason-- but when it turned it out Luke was his son… damn. Where Darth Maul looked sort of scary, I guess, but that was about all he did.

What’s your pick for overall best/worst video game villain?

Let just rattle off what I am thinking here:

    1. Joker - Mark Hamill voiceing the Ace of Knaves never gets old, even if he is, and B:AA really shows that. The banter between the Kevin Conroy voiced Bats and his nemesis was the high point of the game (not counting the fact that Batman kicked ass in his own special way all through out it). Personally, gotham fanboy wise, my GOTY.

    2. Kefka FFVI - Kind of comical, but undoubtably one of the most deranged figures ever faced. Poisoned an entire town's water supply because he didn't feel like waiting around... brilliant and sick. Shows Sepiroth that it takes more then a cool sword and emo haircut to really get stuff done.

    3. Larevic Uncharted 2 - Fresh in my mind from this weekend, quint essential Indy/Drake villain. As effective in the story as is the classic Cintimani/MacGuffin, he is probably one of the best written baddies I have played against in a long while. Unafraid to kill his henchmen, capable of Bondoian errors (I want you to see Shambala before I take it away from you!), he is to Drake what the Nazi's were to Indy. Love it.

Sadly I have yet to play Arkham Asylum :-( and yes, the Joker has always seemed to be the best example of balance between bad guy and villain that I can think of.

But i can't really think of any other awesome video game villains that stand out in my mind right now....just horrible ones lol. Does anyone remember Jack of Blades in the original Fable? He sucked as a villain but I found it funny how he had a high toned wimpy voice in the original release and then in lost chapters they changed his voice so that he actually sounded somewhat evil and mean lol.

When you played AA did you go to where the finale boss fight will be before it was time to? You should if you didn't. The Joker made some...

Luca Blight, (Suikoden II) Anyone who'se played this game will obviously know why, taking him down is also like the most epic battle ever, basically takes your entire army to do so. He was a Genious, Psychotic and just pure evil, but seeing his own mother raped infront of him as a child over and over again kind of messed they guy up so you also feel kind of bad for the guy.

GlaDOS (Portal): Everyone should know why :-P

    Thus ends my short list.

Joker is just the greatest villain period. The reason is because you don't know why he is so demented. He doesn't do it for money, power, or fame. He does it just for the shear terror I guess. Sorta like Dick Cheney. Next is Andrew Ryan in my opinion. The conversation with him made me feel insignificant and make me look at myself sorta. Would you kindly?

    Best Villian Ever?

    Infinity Ward. :P

Nah. Hrmm...Sephiroth from FFVII, and Wesker are at the top of my mind when I think 'villian'.

Although I suppose he can't be considered a complete villain, I thought Magus from Chrono Trigger was great. Ganon(O.o.T.), Atlas/Fontaine from Bioshock, Krelian from Xenogears are good to.

the best and worst villains that i can think of are Nazi's although i love shooting them in the Call of Duty franchise i believe they are over used in video games....Dead Space is one of the best games i played last year so with that being said i am going to say that the ship was a major villain in that game because it needed fixed so it put the main character in harms way...

Luther from Star Ocean: Til The End of Time. I mean the guy is going to erase an entire universe of conscious sentient beings just because he refuses to believe they are real.

I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of any more right now.
