Why Microsoft's Disabling

As part of the next Xbox 360 dashboard update, Xbox 360s will no longer recognize "unauthorized Xbox 360 storage devices." If, for example, you purchased Datel's 2GB Max Memory Card (still available at Amazon.com and can expand up to 16GB due to a replaceable Micro SD card slot) to store data, it will no longer work. Such accessories are not officially licensed by Microsoft and while they've been usable in the past, as of now, Microsoft is eliminating that option.

Xbox evangelist Major Nelson announced the change late last week on his blog. The response from the Xbox community was mixed (the first comment on Nelson's post: "Maybe if Microsoft released larger storage options at prices that weren't completely ridiculous then customers may not seek alternatives"), though many did not even seem aware these options were available to them.

The change in policy is because of cheating, according to a Microsoft spokesperson I talked to.

"cheating...is the primary purpose and use of these unauthorized memory units"

"Microsoft goes to great lengths to protect the Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE service from cheating, which is the primary purpose and use of these unauthorized MUs [memory units]," said the spokesperson. "Unauthorized MUs are not tested for compatibility or certified for safety and compliance standards and thus could damage customer’s Xbox 360 consoles."

This update does not affect the hardware's interaction with third-party hard drives and USB thumb drives. You can still store music, movies and photos on those devices and the Xbox 360 will read off them just fine. Licensed Xbox 360 memory devices are needed, however, in order to store (and move) profiles, game data, etc. Before, this was possible using the memory options provided by Datel and other manufacturers. Soon, it won't be.

"Memory Units without an official Xbox 360 licensed logo are considered unauthorized and are not guaranteed to work with your Xbox 360 console," said the same spokesperson. "All authorized Xbox 360 Memory Units are marked with an official Xbox 360 licensed logo. If you have specific questions about a 3rd party accessory, we recommend you contact that company for additional details."

I did contact a number of companies -- including Xbox 360 accessory manufacturers Datel, Logitech, Mad Catz, Hori and Nyko -- but other than Hori, none responded to my requests for comment. Hori does not manufacture storage devices, nor does it plan to, the company told me. To my knowledge, Datel is the only company who produces memory devices affected by this change that are easily found at retailers like Amazon.com. Datel did release a statement to CVG. It did not address the concerns raised by Microsoft about cheating achieved through Datel's equipment.

Why Microsoft's Disabling "We are following this issue and awaiting the outcome like everyone else," said a Datel spokesperson to the website. "If the Major Nelson blog is to be taken at face value then we're disappointed to see that Microsoft are taking these steps to prevent customers from exercising their freedom of choice. Everyone is looking for ways to make their cash go further at the moment and we believe that Max Memory offers a good value, high capacity, alternative to the official Memory Unit."

Based on Datel's statement, it's unclear whether Datel is interested in becoming a licensed distributor of Xbox 360 storage devices -- or if that's even an option available to them.

Major Nelson's recommendation to gamers using devices that will no longer be compatible was to purchase "officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories." Gamers have few choices here, though, as Microsoft's own website underscores. There are only three storage hardware options on Microsoft's website: a 512MB memory unit for $29.99, a 60GB "starter park" for $99.99 and a 120GB hard drive for $149.99. Datel's 2GB memory unit is $39.99 but held 2GB of data.

I asked Microsoft if there were non-Microsoft but officially licensed memory units available to consumers. Microsoft confirmed there are no such options. Using an unauthorized storage device will not break your Xbox 360 when plugged in after the update, but the data will become inaccessible.

"Any users that have not recovered their profiles off of unauthorized Memory Units will not be able to recover their profiles following the software update," said the spokesperson.

The obsession over achievements means there are no doubt gamers who are using every possible loophole to exploit the system and jack up their score. In the interest of fairness, that should be fixed. But in all of the discussion threads I found about Datel's memory unit (like this one), there were simply consumers interested in a cheaper alternative to Microsoft's regularly criticized memory solutions. Does the possibility exist that gamers are using these devices to cheat? Absolutely.

But the message from consumers seems clear: there should be more memory solutions. Right now, there aren't. It's Microsoft's devices or nothing. Microsoft may be trying to protect people and the integrity of the gamerscore system, but in doing so, they're also taking away their freedom of choice.

That's something to be concerned about.

Does anyone know if Microsoft's MU has ever dropped in price? I fairly certain that it still costs the same amount it did back when I got my 360 at launch.

I believe it is still the same price.

Also nice article, it's a shame that they are willing to punish the the community for what some people might be doing.

They should create alternatives not just set the rule and leave it at that. In the real world you compromise!

    512MB memory unit for $29.99
    60GB for $99.99
    120GB hard drive for $149.99.

Wow, just wow. This is the only reason they're doing this. They want to rip off their customers ever further. The PS3 uses any 2.5 inch HDD and that doesn't bring more cheaters. Anyone who believes M$'s spin on this needs to wake up.

Also, M$ can actually raise the prices even further now that other storage options won't work. Scary isn't it?

After 9 360's. I'm done. My current 360 and has not died yet. Once it has, my PS3 will be all I play. I am tired of the shenanigans that Microsoft is playing part in. You hear me. Shenanigans.

i really can't believe that they expect people to buy that excuse. and i can't believe they would try to screw over their customers so much. especially when there are so many people who defend them to the death - the so-called xbots.

    i love my xbox, but tbh i think people could care less about gamerscore modding. like REALLY? who cares its a number. what they need to do is get rid of this p2p networking crap that there using right now, thats the source of 99.9999% of the cheating going on. but of course that would cost them money. this, and the hardrive prices are my only 2 problems with my xbox that i do love dearly >.<</safety_wrapper&g t;

    Patrick,
I m gonna have to disagree with you on this one. Your comment on after doing some research, you come to realize that most people are looking to buy memory at reasonable price. Of course that s what your gonna find, it not like they will tell you oh ya, I hack my 360 with Max memory I mean HELLO anybody home. Sony does the same thing, as a matter of fact no one makes Sony memory stick but yet you still haven t said anything about that!!! Are you taking sides now??????

I love my Xbox but i think that microsoft is doing this to squeeze money out of their fan base. I mean if any company now a days tried to sell a 512 mb flash card for $30 no one would buy it when you can get 2gb for like $10. This is a large disappointment to me because although i knew microsoft weren't the best when i came to charging a fair price for their devices. actually forcing people to use their over priced devices really just ripped off any facade they thought they had to show the ugly money hungry monter most of us knew lurked under the surface all this time.

I'm ok with this. I mean the various forms of expandability of the console hasnt been disabled they're just trying to level the playing field (so to speak).

Again, to be clear: there is no reason Microsoft shouldn't be applauded for controlling cheating on Xbox Live if that was the primary use of these unauthorized memory devices. However, how come it's taken so long to finally ban them? Why aren't there other options in place -- legal options -- for consumers? I don't doubt Microsoft's claims that some people are using them for the wrong reasons, but like I said, I couldn't find people talking about it. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Sounds like anti-trust to me, where in you don't allow competition so that you can control the market, granted it's for your own system but to charge that much and disallow cheaper alternatives sounds like Bill Gates crossing the line.

Microsoft needs to just lower the price of all the hard drives, 20gb $20,60gb $40, and the 120gb $70. but they should still work something out with that company and still let them sell there product. Then punish the players that they say are cheating. Yes i Am an xbox fan but i think this is wrong and microsoft does need to lower some prices. Actually all the systems need to lower some prices. For instance does anyone agree that $60 is to much for games now. I really think the gaming industry is getting a little to greedy and is going to run its self dry if they don't do something soon,

MS always doing what they do best squeeze as much money out of people as possible. By making good products, people buy them and we have to keep on paying.... paying and paying. MS come on don't you have enough money already? Windows 7 just came out, put a discount on xbox live or make wireless adpotor come with the xbox like they do in Canada. All we have to do is:
This is how it should be
    Xbox 360 bundle
Console, 2 controllers, 3 games (not just that casual crap), 250GB hard drive, NO RROD, free live, and free wireless thing, build in HD drive, and no disc tray. Please MS just do it right we know your just holding back.

if u really want that 250gb hard drive without losing an arm and a leg just flash the firmware. the 360 can't tell the difference. u can do the same thing with usb thumb drives i imagine to use as a memory card. microsoft ur pockets are one of my pet peeves.

Great article, both perspectives are greatly appreciated. My question is if Microsoft had done this from the release would they have dropped prices on "official" memory units? I just bought the 120gb HD for 150, too much $$$ in retrospect.

Wow, why is everyone so surprised by this. It was only a matter of time, has everyone forgotten NetScape already. MS has a track record for this kind of thing. The only thing about it that surprises me is that it took this long. MS has made history out of squeezing money out of us. Vista hardly 3 years old and we are now expexted to upgrade to Windows7. How many of you bought Vista and now are learning that to upgrade to 7 is I think 100 plus dollars.
