No one can ever accuse director, Sam Raimi of shying away from fragile franchises attached to legions of hard-to-please, unforgiving fans. As most are aware, Raimi will begin shooting the fourth Spider-Man film this March. Additionally, (besides the 22 other movies he has in developmental stages,) he's taking on another whopper of a franchise in the World of Warcraft. Raimi recently had some words with MTV regarding the his mega-franchise with the wall crawler, as he loosely discusses ideas and directions. While we're far away from specifics, Raimi does seem to have a general idea regarding how he wants to approach the proverbial minefield that this franchise has somewhat become.
The film is a mere 5 months away from shooting, and it does seem that the spot for the villain(s) have been filled. By whom however, remains a mystery. On board creatively, is Gary Ross, who is working on the much-discussed re-write of the script. (Ross will eventually move on to the Venom film after completing a spy thriller based on Donald Hamilton's series of books with character, Matt Helm, with Bradley Cooper rumored to star.) Raimi is looking to rebound after the critical disaster of the third Spider-Man film.
When MTV conducted a poll, asking which villains fans would like to see in the upcoming sequel, the results were closely in favor of The Lizard with 29% with Carnage coming in second at 26%. With these number brought to Raimi's attention, he responded that he did "love" the Lizard, but was "less familiar" with Carnage. While obviously unable to outright reveal who the identity of the villain, one could judge by his reaction that it is likely one of the two. Raimi further elaborated on the selection process :
"What we're trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome," Raimi said. "Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain—and we're trying this right now; we're trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict."
Are we left with any clues? If Spider-Man 3 had never existed on the earth, I would have sworn that this would mean Venom was our guy. While there are plenty of storylines from the Spider-Man lore that are not yet covered in the films, which have forced Spidey to grow in the way Raimi described (the death of Gwen Stacy, buried alive by Kraven, marriage, being cloned, etc.,) at this point, the universe of the Spider-Man movies is so jumbled, that it could conceivably be anyone. Did we learn anything? I think we did get a new perspective on how overall theme of the film.
I personally think that the villain should be the Lizard, based on the fact that he is an iconic Spidey villain and the fact that the Curt Connors character is already set in place from the previous films and ready to go. Also, in regards to Carnage...no disrespect intended towards those who voted for him, but I can't image how, given the general consensus that Venom was handled so very poorly in Spider-Man 3, that the vote ended up being this closely split on seeing Carnage get a treatment in the same series. (Really?? You want to see Carnage after all of THAT? Really??)
However, this may be Raimi's last go with the wall-crawler, and he could be looking to properly close out the franchise (at least, his version of it) before it gets rebooted by whoever Sony hires next. Therefore, what seems logical may not necessarily play a role, here. At the end of the day, Raimi is a genuine legend, and we should be hoping that he knocks this one out of the park. We know that he has the talent necessary.

I can't imagine they wouldn't use the lizard. They've used every iconic character so far: green goblin, doc ock, venom. the only major iconic character left is the lizard.

Im pretty sure Raimi is "less familiar" with Spider-Man himself.

Raimi already ruined Venom so I would guess he would do the same to Carnage. Anyway. I have always wanted them to do the Lizard, he has been in every movie just do it already.

I want to see Black Cat.

Lizard would be a better fit. I was really disappointed with the way they worked with Venom and Sandman, there was so much more they could have done, and to use and lose venom in about 30 mins of screen time was a complete waste. Carnage would turn out to be even more of the same I would imagine.
Curt Conners could allow for the kind of growth they are talking about, though in the end it would be more of the same as the first two movies (i.e. he cared for Norman and had to deal with him being evil, Octavius was his mentor.) We'll just have to see.

"Okay, now lets cut to a extreme up close zoom of woman screaming and we can call it a wrap." says Sam Raimi for the 10th time approx 5 1/2 months from now...
If you dont know what I'm talking about, you are no where near as critical of Sam Raimi's direction as I am, and I envy you for it.
Spider-man 3 left such a bad taste in my mouth that I truely wish Mysterio would be cast in part 4, just so we could write it off as the ridiculous special effects driven hallucination that it was...

The lizard with a side of mysterio

Please, for the love of all that is holy... no Carnage! The only way to make a carnage movie is to have it done by Tim Burton (or equivalent), have it rated "R" (at the very least), and filled with oodles and oodles of blood, guts and gratuitous dismemberment.
While we're on the subject. Can you not find a better Peter Parker than Toby McGuire? Really? Don't get me wrong. He was a fine "high school" Peter Parker and a halfway decent Spiderman in the first two films, but I fell in love with a wise-cracking, wise-ass wall crawler who's main weapon was getting under the skin of whomever he was fighting. Spiderman is all about witty banter and I just don't see that with Toby. He's just not that entertaining as the Spiderman that I know from the books. Less emoting and more fisticuffs, please.

P.S.- I forgot to mention: Stop it with the CGI Spiderman in one scene and then the real live Spiderman in the next. It looks like crap and it ruins the fantasy. If you can't film a real person doing crazy acrobatic moves with wires in front of a green screen, don't do it at all ... or just do the whole movie in CGI, but don't mix the two if there is going to be such an obvious difference.
P.P.S.- Kristen Dunst sucks.

someone really needs to drag this franchise out back and put a bullet through its head. the first wasnt even good. just cheese cheese cheese. toby sucks. dunst sucks.
if they rebooted it with say... jake gyllenhaal, then i might give them some of my money.

What about Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, or the Black Cat?

Burton? Seriosuly? That hack has ruined enough classics. His school thought seems to be bring in an over-rated Depp, make everything super trippy and then take a dump on the story. IMO Burton hasn't made a good flick in almost a decade. I do agree with you about McGuire & Dunst(fugly) though. Tobey is the perfect dork/nerd for the Peter Parker role but doesn't fit the Spider-man role.
GingerKid
I think they should just trash the whole series and reboot it with Todd McFarlane as the lead writer and director.

Personally, I would rather see Venom AND Carnage in Spidey 4. Both give him a headache at first, and then Venom and Spidey join up to take out Carnage. I.E. Maximum Carnage story from the early 90's. One of my favorites as a kid.
TheActionFigure
I liked all three of Raimi's Spidey films. Yeah I'm the first to admit that Vemon sucked ass in the third one, but the film was otherwise enjoyable. All three films had a goofy quirkiness to them, and fit together like a glove.

best thing you can do with this series is not make any more. give the rights back to marvel. get rid of sam rami. get rid of the actors. and jump start the series like they did with batman. iron man and hulk were great... anohter spiderman by sam rami is doomed to fail.. first one was boring. 2nd one was the best of the series but still suffered from pore acting by toby and kirsten. 3rd was just so horrible i demanded my money back. (not really but it was horrible)

I think they should have Venom come back and have to team up with spider-man to fight Carnage like in the comics now I wanted The Lizard to be in the 3rd Spider-man instead of The Sandman because Sandman was what ruined the 3rd movie he was never a misunderstood criminal just trying to get money for his sick daughter! if the 3rd movie just had Venom and the Lizard I think it wouldve been way way better for the 4th movie lets just have Venom and Carnage and Spider-man 5 can have Lizard
Scottydsntknow
Raimi is a moron so I have no hope

spider man 1 and 2 were good...3 was crap...2 was the best

I, for one, have faith in Sam Raimi. Spider-Man 1 and 2 were fantastic, 2 especially. If he's done it (twice) before, he can definitely do it again. Spider-Man 3 was enjoyable and entertaining, but it was definitely not up to par with the previous two. Personally, I don't think they should have ever introduced the Black Suit or Venom, at least not this early in the franchise. They should have either dedicated an entire movie to that story arc, or drop it altogether. Sandman should've been the main focus of 3. I wish they had spent more time on him, because he's a character that deserves more than he got.
For Spider-Man 4, I honestly don't know what villain they should use. The Lizard would be the obvious choice...I love the idea of having the Lizard and then have Kraven come to hunt both the Lizard and Spider-Man, although the overall plot would kind of be a dead giveaway for the whole movie.
If I were in charge, I would most likely do the Lizard/Kraven story arc, because it takes two villains and seams them together smoothly (unlike that of Spider-Man 3). Although it would be kind of an obvious choice for the story, I would do something shocking or completely unexpected (within the realm of reality) to stir it up a bit to keep the story less obvious. But hey, I'm not in charge so who cares what I think, haha. But still, that's what I would do.
