has sold 2.5 million copies and brought in over $125 million since its release two weeks ago.
Yesterday, our own Patrick Klepek argued in favor of Bungie's approach with ODST. In his piece, Patrick reasoned that should the game go on to be a financial success, which it clearly has, and it’s only been out a few weeks, it would send a clear sign to other developers that taking risks (or at least, thinking about established brands in new ways) can be financially and creatively beneficial.
Well, ODST is a certified hit, and while it will most likely be a while before Bungie takes another adventurous sidestep with its juggernaut of a franchise, at least now the developer has a green-tinted frame of reference should it decide to try something “new” like ODST in the future.
SInce we already kind of know the upsides, do you see any potential downsides to ODST's success?

If this means a new IP is going to be put on the back burner so another expansion is released or for the love of Pete another FPS will is born (and make it WW2 from Switzerland's side of the war).
Come people try an RTS, or a RPG, or even dare say a turn based game!

your right lol wait till we see the numbers of Uncharted 2

Super Street Fighter 4 for $60 says hi.

"do you see any potential downsides to ODST's success?"
Developers thinking they can get away with selling an expansion at full price and reach the same level of success without the game being hugely popular or putting a lot of time into it.
IcemanMX
The only potential downside to this is that this success may go to Bungie's head and they may get complacent resting on their laurels.
I'm hopeful that isn't going to happen, of course... Halo Reachs' around the corner.

P.S.- Sorry, I meant "Halo Reach IS around the corner" not "Halo reach around the corner."

I see big publishers as using this as fuel to milk more franchises. COD:WAW anyone?

You can tell that ths guy that posted this article is a PS3 fanboy. he basically just posted trollbait asking for PS3 users to come in and bash ODST.

no down side stupid question

This is terrible news for gamers. Developers and publishers of popular franchises are getting the message that they can slap together small packages, charge full price and the dedicated fans will eat it up.
If a company can get $60 from the consumer for a smaller, cheaper iteration of their franchise, WHAT'S THE MOTIVATION TO DELIVER A BIGGER, TRUE AAA EXPERIENCE????

This is my ONLY problem with ODST and why I haven't purchased it. You're basically paying $60 dollars for half a game. I played the single player campaign with a friend of mine and we beat it in around 6 hours or so (and for what it had to offer the campaign was fun aside from being VERY short). The other disk is basically the multiplayer I already own with Halo 3. This game at the very least should have been priced at around $40 dollars...OR just DLC I could have downloaded.
And seriously...who here (that owns an X360) didn't get Halo 3? Or let me ask it this way...who here is going to buy this first if they didn't buy Halo 3? $60 dollars for this game is greedy and stupid.

@mikemill--that wouldn't work for anyone but Bungie--I agree that it's a bad message, but I'm guessing developers know better than thinking they'll have any success trying that with anything but Halo or Gears of War, or God of War--something that's been around and sold an infinite number of copies in the past. They would never ever ever work with a new ip

Bungie made a huge profit thats awesome. The bad side is that good games that you know and love will follow in the same path. Use the same engine and slap some maps or even use the old maps and change it up a little. Bang!! Presto a 2million sale that cost developers 3months to works on. So why should we pay 60bucks for a half fast game being made? It should be 30dollars for those kinds of games.

I personally want Nintendo do take a big risk with some of its own first party titles like "Metroid: the other M" and making new game ideas (pikman)

Ok, farmers! The milking of the cows is confirmed. A trend is set and is in full flow.
All I can say is, the power to purchase or not is still my decision.
Gullible fan-bots took the bate.

@Sandrock323
Refering to your MW1 comment about 11 maps. If you remember(if you had the game from launch) they added several maps including Showdown as free maps that weren't part of the game on launch day and then they added the map pack. I never heard anything about 11 maps but they did give us some.
TheSiwentKiwwah
@myself--I take that back, it would work for a few other developers, such a Capcom, naughty dog, etc

Snipe said it best. Why should we pay 60 bucks for half a game? We shouldn't, but we will continue to because our culture says that we need the new things now. Not tomorrow, but yesterday. So as long as that is the rule, releases like this will continue. Again, I say, if you don't like it, don't buy it day 1.
Even better... Johnny Cochranism: If you have a doubt, wait it out!!!!

Finally got a chance to play this game last night and it was an alright experience. The campaign was about what i'd expect but It just wasn't the same knowing I wasn't playing as the ultimate badass in the game. It's like an expansion game with you playing a lamer character. not cool. The fire fight thing was pretty cool but would be much cooler as the chief and with a BR. I was alright though, but I can see why people would be unhappy with paying 60 bucks for it.
gamersince1995
SO DOES THAT MEAN I SHOULD GO BUY MY SELF A 360 AGAIN??? MHMM..... OH yeah the old along wait game for the 360 YEAHAY!!!
