Do you still have all your old games from past generation consoles? Do you still want to play them? Do they even work in the next-gen console you have? No matter what your answer to any of those questions, you should check out this week's Soapbox.
The Sess sits down to talk about the PS3 Slim's lack of backwards compatability, and uses that as a springboard to explain that while he loves playing old games once in a while, re-releasing them through digital download formats gives developers a chance to go back and fix the small bugs that originally existed in the game. Check out the video below and see if you agree with Adam, then let us know in the comments below.

Yes I still like playing my games from last gen, and I've used the xbox360 to play games like Psychonauts, Jet Set Radio Future, Fable, ect
I use my wii to play gamecube games like wind waker and killer 7
If my ps2 was still working I would probably be playing Silent hill 2&3 or Shadow of the Colossus.

Love the Sess!

I could care less about backwards compatibility. I got tons of current games to play for my 360 and don't have time to go back and play old games again. If I played it, won't again. If I havn't played it by now, I won't. Too much is currently coming out. No need to go to the past.
I hope that game don't go in to the digital distribution. I like having a disc I don't know why. I just do. I like the box art, the manual, and the case. Its something about the who thing that I'm paying for it, it's mine and I have something tangible.

I totally agree with you Adam. Thank you for pretty much saying my feelings on this.
I personally don't care about backwards compatibility. Like you said, sure it may come in handy once and a while but not that many games out there that are last generation will make me want to play it over again. But I shouldn't worry about it anyway since I own a 20GB PS3. =)
I am glad for God of War I and II to be released on Blu-Ray, a great way to catch up on the series for people that never played it, which includes me. ( I expect people to reply to me about this matter...)

I love being raped even more by video game companies forcing me to re-buy my favorite old games. On the other hand, backwards-compatibility isn't all that old. PS2 had it, PS3 had it for about five minutes, plus HD and re-mastered is cooler for games than for Star Wars. My real beef is with Adam's "Entitlement Disease" comment. Yes I should feel entitled as the video game companies are making things for ME. You know, since I buy their products and keep them employed.

If they were going to re-release all the old games that I want to play through some sort of DLC, that'd be just fine. But there is no guarantee that it will happen. Which is why I want some BC.
I'm not rabid or psychotic about it.. I'd just prefer it.

I kept quite a few of my "last gen" XBox games (namely Fable: TLC, the Halos, and KOTOR) when I upgraded to 360. Within a few months, however, I realized that I hadn't played any of them, and had little interest in doing so much further since the 360 games I had acquired (Halo 3, Bioshock, Mass Effect) were SO good, so I sold them back to Gamestop. While I agreed that backwards compatibility is nice, I think Sessler hit the nail on the head with his assertion that digital distribution is the new way to incorporate games of the previous gen(s).

What i really can't figure out about all these people complaining about backwards compatability is this: How did you play your PS2 games the first time you played them? on your PS2....here's a thought...you wanna play a PS2 game........just plug your PS2 back in and PLAY THEM.
ENUFF ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GET OVER IT!!!!!!! BW COMPATABILITY WILL NEVER HAPPEN SO DROP IT!!!

The only old games i want are god of war 1 and 2 but they are haveing remakes so i dont care now.

The problem I have with this is that I don't want to pay for a game that I already have just to play it on my PS3. Sure, its nice that the developers go and fix some of the bugs in the game, but I don't want to pay $15 or more just to play the same game. Its nice for people who haven't played or bought the original game, but for people like me, who have a library of ps2 games that we still play (For example: Jak and Daxter series, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Splinter Cell series, GTA series), its just a waste of money.

i love the idea of downloadable games because its simplicity, accessibility, and price points. like games on demand on the 360, im hoping the playstation 3 will get the same feature, im still waiting for Rare's Jet Force Gemini download.

PERFECT DARK XBLA.
You devoted a whole soapbox to GoldenEye 007. This previous soapbox would have been a great time to bring up the fact that Perfect Dark is coming out on Xbox live arcade AND its getting "improvments". I cant wait and I have a feeling you cant either. Mention it next time please.

I have no problem with buying old games vie digital distribution and I do hope that programs will be put into place where we don't have to repurchase a game digitally, if we already own the disc. It's possible that their could be a program in place for those that own the disc, but can provide a small fee or provide proof of purchase, so they can download the game. I suppose that is what has me concerned, that publishers will use this opportunity to take advantage of gamers. They could either charge the game more then it's worth and retail owners would have to repurchase a game they already own. Another issue that could arise is that their is a strong possibility that not all older games will ever be released digitally.
I do agree Adam has point, where publishers can fix and retool their older games for digital distribution. But that would be purely optional and there is no guarantee that developers would do that. I suppose I am just focusing on the negative, but I do believe that publishers will take this opportunity to gouge gamers.

Hey Old Man( Sessler) i like when you talk

Having backward compatability is a form of rewarding customer loyalty. The fact that they leave it off and re-release the older games digital is purely a marketing ploy. Eff that!

Eliminating BC and then charging customers for the game as a digital download is wrong. Perhaps, I should keep my PS2. Offering BC with the PS2 and then eliminating it with the PS3 seems like a step back... You add or enhance features not remove them...

I care, I have a PS3 and never had a chance to play God of War 1 and 2, but I have the 40gb version of the PS3 so...woe is me.

I think as Adam brought up at one point: I like to have one console to play the games from their previous consoles. I still have a couple of PS1 games that I haven't finished and, as I gave away my PS1 to my father, I have to use my PS2 or my computer, thankfully a program can help me run those CDs, to play those game. So it's not as always as easy to just go and plug up an older version of the console because we might have possibly sold those consoles because we needed the money but relied on the next generation of consoles to be able to play the previous generation games. Heck, when I finally got my 360 a year ago, I was going to sell my Xbox to get some money back, but when I learned that several games weren't compatiable with it, then I didn't want to risk not being able to play some of the games I haven't played yet, might buy, or want to go back and revisit.
Now, I agree, to a degree, that having digital distribution versions of the games are good as it's an easier way to get and play those older games along with it sometimes even being cheaper. Especially if those games don't work anymore; however, the problem seems to be that I'm being told that I'll have to pay to play those exact same games again, but they may have some slight tweeks to it. If I've already bought the game, then there should be some system set up that allows me to download the game for free because if there are several old games I want to play, I'll logically think it'll be better to spend money on getting the system again instead of buying several of those games again.
The only time I would have no problem with buying an old game is if the entire game was remade with better graphics, music, longer length, more to do, etc. then I would go with buying it again; however, I have a feeling that when that'll happen, it'll be released on disk at a $60 value over putting it on a games on demand type of service for $10, $20, or more. At least in videos and music, there are ways for you to transfer them onto a newer form of distribution, but for games, we can't transfer them onto the newer form of disk/device used and also make them work.

I agree on the not needing backwards compatability thing. I dont need it and I still have a lot of PS2 and PS1 games, well over 40 in total. I also have the original systems though so it wouldn't matter anyway if my PS3 were BC or not. I don't buy new systems to play old games, same reason why someone wouldn't buy a new car and drive their old used one. Most people who wants BC don't realize that when you get the new system and get new games you really start to forget about the old games and you lose your desire to play them.
Even with all those old games and the systems, I haven't picked one up in over a year and I have a lot of playworthy games (GOW, RE4, NFS, GTA, MGS...)
In fact last time I played a last gen game I look at it and laughed at how bad the graphics and gameplay was and said, "Wow this is how games used to look?" Once you play the new stuff, it's hard to go back from it.
P.S. Sessler messed up having castlevania playing in the background, I was so busy watching that I was hardly paying attention to what he was saying, lol.
