To many members of the gaming population, one of the main selling points of the original PlayStation Portable was the ability to mod the system. The new PSP Go, though, will not offer the same opportunities to modders and/or pirates.
The last couple iterations of the PSP featured a removable battery that could be replaced with a hack friendly power-source, but according to Sony, the new handheld will not allow this.
Sony's John Koller said, "You won't be able to rip your games and play them on the system, the firmware precludes that," Koller explained. "There's no external battery, so there's a number of protections put into place on the system."
I don't like this news on principle: Anything that limits my options as a consumer is bad. But I never mod anything anyway. I'm not into piracy, and I don't have the patience to mod things to play homebrew games or otherwise change their functionality. I'm just not interested enough to get seriously into that kind of "scene." Maybe you're different, though. Are you a modder? Does the news that the PSP Go doesn't support modding change your opinion of the system at all?

It will still be modded. All they've done is make a new puzzle to intrigue the hackers.

Dont they have to have games people want first? i mean, thats why people pirate games right?

Are there Starboard and Portside cannons?
joshpelkie8
seriously? the battery not being removable won't hurt just pirates but legit customers too. and ripping games for personal use should be legal. I think this system will fail...

Yet more ways they will be ripping people off on this console and they claim its all to help combat pirates, but how in the hell does this benefit the regular legitimate consumer?
IT DOESNT!
Not to mention its not going to stop pirates, so in the end its a losing battle that only ends up costing people who play fair more money.

it will be hacked within 2-3 weeks no doubt. Still wont get one im fine with my modded one right now

BTW if you dont know this but 360 and ps3 can be modded. Even there controlers are moded. So what makes you think they can't mod a pspgo? I'm not a moder but just him saying that it can't be done. This will get every hacker in town trying to mod the system. You can still send applications from pc to pspgo via usb port. So yes it can be moded :)
Jimi0088
It will be done!!!!! Just a matter of time.

Uh Sony this is the reason that people hate the Sixaxis controllers. No other handheld has ever not have had the ability to replace the bats as they kick the bucket and can not be charged anymore and I am talking gameboy - DSi/PSP. These things will suffer the same issue that iPods do (heavy use kill them fast and then it cost more then the unit is worth to fix the issue). This is a case of cutting off your own nose to spite your face. Not that this will stop the hackers but it will hurt the people who want the system.
Poho
Ya, my PSP battery can't hold a charge for very long anymore, and if you can't get a new one to put in it, that'll make the system useless. I did hack mine, but I liked being able to use Youtube on it, brighter screens, and playing music while in a game. And I wouldn't bother buying most of the games anyways. The only difference is whether I have to buy it or not. If I do, well I'll get over not playing some mediocre game. (except tekken and gran turismo, both I'd be willing to pay for.)

What does he mean "There's no External Battery"????? Does that mean if my Battery goes bad after a year or two, I can't easily replace it??? Are you frackin kidding me!?!?!?!?!?!?
BertSaxby
Ridiculous. Even more ridiculous not being able to change batteries.
There certainly is nothing 'green' about arbitrary limitations that shorten product life.
Oh well, just call it another Sony Epic Fail. They should have a patent on it by now.

you just wait its gonna be another tease and touch as stated above theres pretty much no limit to a hacker and his imagination i personally am gonna stay with my darth under a service plan and if that dont work theres plenty of places i can get a used one and im sure most of us have a small stack of umds sitting somewhere gotta love gamestop ,game crazy and pawn shops
cryfordawn
BS nothing is unhackable. If I buy a PSPgo all I will do is steal the games. Why would I bother paying for DLC when its free. This was a dumb idea and I plan to help the hackers show sony they were WRONG.

For all the ppl complaining about bad batteries going dead fast, you guys really need to learn how to properly charge your batteries and do proper charge cycling. As in you fully discharge them and fully recharge them at least once a month. Also dont let the battery sit empty for long periods of time.
I have had my psp 1000 since launch day and the battery pack it has is still going strong and hasent changed one bit. Same goes for my cell phone battery and other rechargable batteries i have.
Just remember dont go charging the battery when its half full or when the battery is very warm.
Now for not being able to change the battery to thwart hackers...well its a small deal. Sony does not want any kind of ripping going on because that would lead to to many sales being lost. But if you really want to know, sony is mostly moving more twards digital distrobution anyway so you will have to buy the games from the psn. We already see this happening with alot of the newer games coming out where the games are going straight to DD instead of heading to a umd disk.
Also with the addition of the PSP mini programs you will see more developers just making DD programs. Sony is shifting gears and soon you wont see many umds at the local game store. If the games are only available only from the psn, it means the game wont be pirated as easily as it is with umds.
A wile back on the sony forums alot of the known hackers complained that the psn games are easier to hack then the umd games, but i laughed and asked them that if it was so much easier to hack the psn downloads then why are they complaining if sony changed to all downloadable content...i never got an answer. Mostly because the hackers where trying so hard to keep sony fron changing to DD games mostly because they know that the DD content is harder to hack then copying the umd games.
Also Sony wont say it but some time in the near future i would see more ppl with hacked psp's that download the games being blocked from the psn, at least from the psp games.

someone will figure something out.

Let's be honest here, it's common knowledge that if anything is sold to the public it will be modded in some way, from a pencil, (yes, I use to carve an ergonimc grip into my #2 pencils) to a portable computer. There are iPod touches running the full OS X 10.5 and still utilizing it's touch screen functions.
I gaurantee you will see a hacked PSP Go within the month of release.
