The big news of the day is Disney buying Marvel. Disney is reportedly paying $4 Billion for the comic-book company.
So far, reaction from "serious" financial types have trumpeted the wisdom of the proposed deal. For example, Arvind Bhatia, and analyst with Sterne, Agee and Leach told Reuters, "My initial reaction is that this is a positive. a win-win situation for both companies. On the surface, it looks like a great merger." And Jason Bazinet of Citigroup wrote in a research note: "We think deal makes sense strategically...It will help Disney target the male demographic aged 18 and 35 years old, a group that it currently has limited appeal to. Disney will also be able to monetize Marvel's brands across its entire ecosystem (TV, parks, movies, consumer products, video games, etc.)"
So Disney is going to make money, and Marvel is going to make money, but how will the deal affect you, the consumer? Will we be seeing Iron Man show up in the next Kingdom Hearts game? Will Goofy the Dog-Thing be appearing in the next issue of Spider-Man? Will Iron Man 2 feature a princess-oriented subplot? Take a deep breath, everybody -- it's not going to happen. I don't think Disney is going to do anything to "water down" or taint the Marvel line at all.
Disney's press release pointed out that Ike Perlmutter, Marvel's Chief Executive Office, will stay on to manage Marvel's properties, so, initially, it doesn't seem like there's a huge push for change in the Marvel strategy. The film rights to the Spider-Man and Iron Man franchises, the two largest Marvel film series right now, are already owned by other studios (Columbia and Paramount), so we won't see Disney-produced versions of these series any time soon.
In spite of these details, Disney could still significantly change Marvel's output, but if you look into the precedent Disney has set in the past, as well as its likely rationale for the purchase, I doubt the company plans to Disney-fy Marvel.
In 2006, Disney purchased Pixar animation. There was fear at the time that Pixar movies would henceforth feature pop-culture-wiseguy sidekicks in the vein of Disney animation movies, and that Pixar films would creep toward the Disney formula and eventually all be stories of self-empowered princesses. But if you look at what Pixar has produced since then (Wall-E, Up), that's almost the opposite of what's happened. If anything, Pixar has been allowed to be more creative, adult and less "Disney" over the years.
Disney has a long history of buying "edgier" companies that dates back to the early 90s, when it bought Miramax, leading to fears among fanboys and film-geeks that Miramax's cutting-edge content would be censored and watered down. It didn't happen, and I don't think it's going to happen here.
Disney's many holdings and film companies are strong in appealing to many demographics -- they have young girls, and young boys locked up with various kiddy properties, and teen girls with all that Hannah Montana stuff-- but Disney is weak in appealing to young men/teen boys -- that 15-25 demographic that runs the box office consistently. No one knows the future, but I think it's very, very unlikely that Disney will do anything to to significantly change the proven success Marvel has shown over the last few years at appealing to that segment of the market. Basically, it aint' broke, so I doubt Disney is going to fix it.
Disney has always been incredibly good at keeping their brands from being watered down: They seem to know exactly when it's appropriate to invoke corporate synergy, and when it would be lame. It's part of the Disney culture that goes back to when Walt himself was in charge. So it's cool. If anything, I think Disney will mostly just do a better job of distributing Marvel entertainment to an even bigger audience.

Screw that the marvel animated movies are already to kiddy friendly ( no blood and not enough violence extc.) If Disney gets a hold of it it will really be crap. If you want to see how a comic animated show should be look at the HBO series of Spawn.

Marvel Vs. Disney fighting anyone? lol

I'm ok with it as long as nothing and I mean nothing changes in the Marvel Universe. Keep it business as usual NO! X-Men/Mickey Mouse Club crossovers or any Snow White and the Seven Mutants or The Little Mermaid/ Namor crossovers please.

I hope this means that Disney wants to change and they're not trying to change Marvel too much... Disney does have some sense, they did publish Pure and that game rocked, so maybe they want to change their image but Marvel has a huge fandome and if you mess with the fanboys ...it's going to be non stop Disney blasting all over the web. I must admit haven't collected comics since the 90's but I keep an eye on what's going on and with this purchase it's only going to get more "interesting". (good, bad who knows.)

This is great for the companies, but terrible news for me. Damn you Disney!

This is proof that mondays suck. My inner child has just died as the Nazi mouse machine will most likely destroy a good thing....

@SJohnson makes valid points, and now I have faith that Marvel won't be destroyed by Disney.

If a Kingdom Hearts 3 were to be created, Id very much like to see marvel in it, ya know, expand to different worlds but not just disney/final fantasy and such.
I wanna see it expand to Star Wars, Marvel, and looney toons. Maybe not looney toons, but who knows, Bugs bunny with a keyblade :P

Well, Apple appears to be doing a better job of controlling my life than MTV ever has. On the plus side of things, Disney (who also owns ESPN) has Steve Jobs as Majority Shareholder and a member on the board. Based on what they've done with ESPN, I'm optimistic that they will not tarnish the Marvel brand.
My concerns though defiantly plays into the corporate stance Disney has with its Movies. Since Marvel made the decision to produce it's own Intellectual Property I have found that their live action productions are really capturing what the comic enthusiast has been looking for while still attracting everyone else. I'd hate to see Disney's policies water down the remaining Avengers lineup.
I highly doubt we'll see Micky Mouse dancing with Wolverine, or Deadpool taking a cleaver to Tinker Bell (although - that would be rather hilarious!); The main Marvel Universe will likely remain independent but there are numerous other properties under the Marvel belt that have potential for synergy with other Disney properties.

goodbye marvel, we knew ye well.
I hate Disney.

It might be the case that Disney won't change anything about Marvel. But, it is true that movies and things published by Disney have a "lets learn a life lesson while having fun" essence to them. And its true of most super hero comics and movies that there is a lesson to be learned. But you can almost guarantee that when another Marvel movie comes through, it has to be ran by Disney of course, and when they see things like terrorists killing people, refer to ironman 1, its going to be edited so fast that Marvel's head will roll. Disney likes being supported by all the people who are in high moral fiber, why? Because they know that if its between watching people get blown up or a happy cheerful girl sing songs about all sorts of kid friendly stuff, parents are going to choose the less violent more appropriate show.
And, not to sound like a conspiracy nut, what else does Disney own? ABC. Which, as far as I know, has a very large news station as well. So who would be funding the studies to show movies with violence harm children and make them threats to society? Bingo. Disney strikes again. Because they can have them reported by good ole ABC's news network. But now that they own the maker of some of these shows and movies, and can edit them as they see fit, they are going to support Marvel and start trying to get those parents who choose the happy singing girl shows, to buy into the very thing they tried to direct them away from. and guess what? They will buy it like it was made of gold, why because its been changed to fit into the Disney namesake.
P.S. If you are a parent who does discourage violent shows from your child, this was in no way meant to offend. Violence is a problem amongst young people, i do agree to that, but as far as how it should be handled I'm sure i differ from your perspective.

the merge is wise finiacally but retarded in so many ways its like motal kombet merging with sesame street(sub-zero: this match has been a presented by the lette "b"). just doesnt make sense but then again if they watered it down only otherwise its gouing to be all good. i better not see mickey in the ultimate avengers, or the iron man in tron... wait... wait that is a great idea at anytime not in 2 months not even in 30 years just wait until i drop dead.. scratch that i dont want my children or my grandchildren eyes to be tainted with the black panther being coverted into the black lion then made into the movie called the black lion king.i hells of dont want to see ironmans suit to be powered out of hopes dreams and a little pixie dust

Let's not forget that DC has been owned by Warner Bros for years and DC Comics hasn't gone all "Loony Tunes." If Disney were run by smart business people (and it is) they would follow AOL-Time-Warner's lead and let Marvel run atonomously.
CamperHunter1
As much as I hate anything Disney has their hands directly on, there are a lot of good points listed here, Disney owns more than you think but they don't tamper with their day to day affairs, they just give a little advice or funding at most to make sure their projects get out so they can keep making money and gain larger demographics.
Might be a good thing for Marvel, a lot of their latest releases haven't exactly been grand slams with critics or moviegoers, a little brand management and control might do them some good.

The most massive merger of intellectual properties ever.
My initial reaction is one of disgust and hopelessness. I'm still worried about the mouse's heavy hand in the Marvel cookie jar. But, if they let Marvel do their thing for the most part, imagine what Marvel will be capable of with Disney watching their $back$. Sure we'll see a flood of horrible animated cartoons and toys (let's face it, it's inevitable), but considering they are lassoing a much needed older demographic with this acquisition, they'll probably turn it up to eleven as far as Marvel productions are concerned. Disney Parks might get a hell of a lot more exciting in the coming decade. Sucks for Universal, though. we'll see where that goes.
I don't think they are stupid enough to 'Disney-fy' Marvel. It would be corporate suicide.
BONERJAM
Why does everyone think this is going to ruin Marvel? Who is to say that this will even change what Marvel does? The Marvel name will likely stay intact thus allowing Disney to keep Marvel comics the same way without getting murdered in the press and by angry parents. Can you people simply let something play out before you jump to conclusions and start whinning about it?
