In part two of G4’s mammoth interview with Quantic Dream’s David Cage from GamesCom 2009, the Heavy Rain creator talks to Billy Berghammer about the developer's creative relationship with Sony, who Cage believes the game’s audience will be, and what lies ahead creatively for him and his team.
Easily one of Cage’s most compelling assertions comes during his discussion about how he hopes people will play the game, given that so much of the experience depends on making decisions and seeing them through to their narrative conclusions. In terms of how many times players will play through the game, Cage says:
“I would like people to play it once…because that’s life. Life you can only play once…I would like people to have this experience that way.”’
Of course, in the end, it is a game, and Cage understands that people will naturally want to go back and play through again, and even perhaps reload a previous save point to avoid unpleasant results that might occur because of actions taken in the game.
To this, Cage says, “I’m fine with that, but the right way to enjoy Heavy Rain is really to make one thing because it’s going to be your story. It’s going to be unique to you. It’s really the story you decided to write…I think playing it several times is also a way to kill the magic of it.”

so, in other words, no re-play value.

i agree with him
DreamingDarklyRobin
So he wants us to NOT replay a $60 game that I got for the sole purpose of replaying multiple times?
Someone shut this guy up.

I agree with him sometimes I don't watch a movie that is really good 2-4 x over. It does kill the magic. But it's good if you watch it again next year or 2 years later of which you have forgotten alot about the movie. Even with all the replay value I just don't go back after I beaten a game.

So... a guaranteed rental? I appreciate his sentiments, but that is not really something I think you want to come out and say and expect high sales. But then again being a Quantic Dream game, maybe they weren't expecting high sales... But still, this can't help.

i agree that gamers shouldnt try to change what they have done in their play through once its happened and that its your own unique story but i will most likely go back and play through again solely because i would love to see how the story pans out other ways from what i did
joughy
Wow, what an inventive way to increase sales...pay $60 for this amazing game I have created...the only catch? You can only play it once or it will be forever spoiled. Let's see how this works out for them.

Mr. Cage: foot, meet mouth
cmdluke
remember there are multiple characters to play through the game with. beat it with one character, then play through it again with another character. there is your replay value right there.

i think some of you guys are taking what he said out of the way he meant it. he doesnt want gamers to play it like any other game because this game is supposed to be like life itself and there is no redo or restart buttons in life. he is making a game so of course people are going to play it more than once but i think he wants to be attached to the choices that we make within the game and the way that we direct the choices within the world of heavy rain. honestly guys yea he may have chosen the wrong words for what he wanted to get across but its not like he is say play this game then throw it away so that you can waste that $60 you spent on it. he just wants you care about whats going on and not treat it like any other game by not going back and changing something in your play through because you didnt like what happened

l33t360: Brain, meet Book.
With the variables the games contains, reloading a last save to change something is idiotic.
Playing through again and again, will not kill the magic, but reloading a game over and over until you get what you want, and not what is intended is the magic killer.
Off topic, God of War 1 and 2 are getting refitted with 60 fps and 720p visuals, and trophy support,
and will be released on a single blu-ray for the holiday season.
So GoW fans, rejoice.

I think he's talking about not altering the story on your first play round and to stick with your own dicision. There are alot of play value on it. You can alter the story and you have other character that you can play from and see how the story turn out.
I33t360 you are such a tool! Why does it bothers you since you dont have a ps3 anways? Are you mad that the PS3 is getting alot of notice now and all your friends are leaning toward getting a slim? Maybe its because you bought a system that broke down on you so now you have free time to go to the forum?
sukTHEfacc
that's just stupid. i will play it without reloading save points...but since the game is so dynamic, wouldnt it be a GOOD idea to play thru multiple times? wouldnt it be like getting 2 or 3 different movies in one?
sukTHEfacc
TO ADD:
wouldnt this be like a Goosebumps "choose your own adventure"? I loved those books specifically for the fact that I would read thru multiple times, and get a new experience from each...
BONERJAM
So you expect me to pay $60 to play a game once and thats it. I would never buy a game expecting to only play through it once. I may pick this up and if I do dont expect me to play it just once. I understand what he is saying and what he expects but I'm not going to do it like that.
IBloodstormI
I'm not going to bash on the guy because I fully understand what he is saying. A lot of you need to learn the meanings of words when used together in sentences.
The guy is saying that the first play through should be the one that matters most. He wants you to play it without reverting back to saves when something goes wrong. He is saying that the second time you pay it, you will know what not to do, making the experience less unknown.
I still think this game looks like nothing more then an interactive movie with too many quick time events and a lot less actual playing of a game, but I see the guys point.
Shockwave562
I personally really enjoy going back and making different decisions in a game. I like to choose my own outcome the first time around and then in subsequent plays I tend to choose the opposite just to see how it changes the game.
I'm sure this will be not only possible but enjoyable, contrary to what this guy believes.
fuyuhana
I'm with the game creator on this one.
This looks like one of those titles that are so immersive that you sometimes forget you're playing a game.

Yea everyone is thinking way to much about what he said... Its just his statement about what he would like people to do, I respect that and see exactly what he is saying. Doesnt mean I am actually going to do that though. This game looks solid right now, im expecting to play something fresh and original which doesnt come along very often any more due to how much of a risk it is to produce something when you have no idea if it will even make money.
