Aliens: Colonial Marines Release Date Depends On Aliens Vs. Predator's Success

Aliens: Colonial Marines will be released eventually, Sega president and COO Mike Hayes told me in a phone interview last week. It's a question of when, whose answer hinges on another game entirely.

Sega's grand plans for rebooting the Aliens franchise have changed. The Aliens RPG from Obsidian Entertainment was cancelled, while Gearbox Software's Aliens: Colonial Marines was placed on the backburner and Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator moved to the forefront. Gearbox continues to work on the squad-based shooter while its future remains in limbo.

Hayes said Sega still hasn't nailed down a release date for Aliens: Colonial Marines because there are several factors at play.

"I think the detail of that [release date] is probably still too early," said Hayes. "What I would say is it's unlikely that we'd launch anything within six months [after Aliens vs. Predator], but probably nine months, eight to 12 months possibly. Though we literally are looking at that at the moment and a lot of is going to depend, as well, on how successful AvP  is at the box [retail]."

There's a problem for Aliens: Colonial Marines in this scenario. Sega has a great amount of confidence in Aliens vs. Predator. Hayes said Sega's received more feedback from fans about the release of that game than anything else in its lineup. If Aliens vs. Predator is wildly successful, Sega can move ahead with Aliens: Colonial Marines sooner, possibly even before the end of 2010. If gamers reject Rebellion's shooter, though, Sega could decide to hold off for a while.

"It's what level of 'well' does it do," said Hayes, speaking of Aliens vs. Predator's potential sales, "do we then determine when we want to bring the next one out and then, of course, determine what the third one in the series is likely to be."

Despite the cancellation of the Aliens RPG, Sega is still committed to producing a third Aliens game.

"Oh, absolutely," said Hayes.

Well that sucks, I am more excited about A:CM than AvP... I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I don't care about Aliens vs. Predator. The franchise is beating a dead horse. I just want Colonial Marines :(

If I have to purchase AVP to get colonial marines then so be it. Everyone else should be willing to support the franchise as well.

So most of you are willing to play a potentially cookie-cutter shooter with colonial marines instead or playing a game with all three factors in play? Am i the only one who sees this as strange??? AvP could be the sleeper hit the franchise has needed for, well, decades!

Cookie cutter is AVP. It's the third game in the series. No game has ever just pitted the marines against the aliens from this franchise. AVP has been done to death, you can find mods that do it for just about every FPS from the last 10 years. I've always thought mixing Predator in was a terrible idea, from the very first comic through all the games, movies, etc. I wouldn't mind a bit if AVP was canned entirely and CM got a bigger marketing boost. Saying that CM is a cookie cutter title while AVP is original is like saying Silent Hill was cookie cutter but Silent Hill Homecoming was an amazingly original work of art.

I agree that AvP would be the more cookie cutter of the two, seeing as how it is the third game in the series. I disagree that it's been done to death. The last actual game came out some time ago, and both games were really good. Neither the Alien or the Marine had much to do with the Predator in those games. The Predator was usually just an end level/game boss that you had to fight, not much else. My only concern with the new AvP, aside from the worry that it'll bomb, is the Predator in multiplayer. In the older games the Predator was just way to good compared to the Marine. I didn't play the Xenomorph much, but with all the weapons, vision modes, and "med-kits" the Predator had, the Marine just seemed weak. Guess it doesn't really matter though. I'll buy both. :)

AvP is going to bloody awesome and in multiplayer they will balance it. the Predator will be awesome but only 1 or 2, the marines will be average but have numbers and technology while the aliens are brute force and numbers if everyone works together as either a) Marines or b) Aliens it will be balanced and imo AvP loooooks sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet im defintely buying

this is one of the main reasons i got into gaming, after seeing Aliens. Some times when i play halo or modern warfare i think about alot of the ideas those companys used from the movie to put into their game and alot of companys did the same thing. but its not a bad thing, those games are so badass that they are one of the best FPS out there and thats just with their own concept. That will be BS if they dont make CM

Man, release a simple top-down shooter like Alive 4-Ever for iPhone/iPod Touch based loosely on ALIENS: Colonial Marines, and you'll have yourself a promotional item that pays for itself. I miss the old hand-drawn artwork of the old ALIENS vs. Predator arcade game: http://screenmania.retrogames. com/arcade/04/arcade_0100.html

It has been about 5 years since it was announced and now they wanna put avp out first when it wasnt even thought of before acm. sega is going to be the next acclaim.
