At The Azenberg Group's [A] List Summit, vice president of strategy and client services Steve Fowler took some time to chat with me about his days at Microsoft. Serving as lead product manager from 2000 to 2003, Fowler was responsible for the brand management of numerous action games, including a little title called Halo. The word on the street was that Fowler was largely responsible for the game's tagline, "Combat Evolved". When asked about its origins, he told me:
"Back in the original days of the Halo brand, before it was anything, we did a lot of consumer research. We went across the world, talking to consumers in Europe, Asia, and North America. We were concerned with gamers that weren't aware of what Halo was and we needed to be concerned with them because if this was going to be a franchise title then we couldn't just rely on core gamers or people that were following it since the MacWorld announcement. The new customers were going to be the ones that would make or break the Xbox, so we need Halo to go bigger than that.
The emotional response to the word halo was not exactly what we were looking for. [laughs] It seems trivial now because it's such an established brand and it's synonymous now with unbelievable sci-fi action. Back in the day, halo was seen as a feminine word and had religious connotations to it, so we felt like we needed a definer. 'Combat Evolved' was what ended up being that definer. [laughs]
There was a lot of back and forth between Bungie, the internal Microsoft marketing team, and the outsourced creative agency. There was a lot of debate, a lot of nail biting, a lot of screaming at each other [laughs], and lots of compromise. It was the single piece of content that defined the Xbox. At that time it was the next-gen system, so we were evolving combat. First-person shooters on consoles were never really that popular outside of GoldenEye 007, so Halo was a big risk. It was a bold statement that said, 'Hey, this is a shooter that was meant to be played best on a console with a gamepad in your hand.'"
When I asked Fowler if he was the one that coined the phrase, he shared credit with his team. He also told me that a lot of people at Microsoft weren't keen on Master Chief representing the Xbox and would have preferred a certain Oddworld Inhabitant.
"Well, I think I had the most responsibility for the phrase, but it certainly wasn't done in a vacuum. There was a lot riding on Halo back then. There were a bunch of naysayers that didn't believe in leading with a first-person shooter as basically your mascot for a console launch. It had never been done before. There were people internally at Microsoft that felt that Oddworld should have gotten the bigger budget and should have gotten the bigger push, because Munch would have made a better console-launch mascot. They asked, 'How can this big green guy with no face and no voice represent our box?' In retrospect, it was perfect [laughs]. Microsoft is this giant green machine that doesn't talk to anybody, so it made exact sense!"
Can you imagine how different the Xbox would have been if Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee was its leading title? I'm not the biggest Halo fan around, but it's easy to see that it's an enormously successful franchise that really helped define the Xbox and Xbox 360. I understand why Munch would have been the choice for traditionalists that wanted the Xbox to have its Mario or Sonic and it's easy to say this looking through a retroscope, but I can't imagine Halo not leading the Xbox. Combat evolved indeed!
What do you think of the origins of the phrase "Combat Evolved"? Do you think the Xbox would have been as successful if it was led by Munch instead of Master Chief?

Wow, must be a sloooooow news day...

I remember hearing about Halo back in '01 and thought it was a RPG or something. All of my friends just called it Halo and I didn't have a Xbox at the time so I figured "Ah, it must some new RPG or fantasy game".

i never really gave it much though. i always thought it was cheesey anyway. and if oddworld was the xbox's flagship title, then there would have been no 360 for the most part.

I"m not a big fan of Halo, but i rather choose master chief over Munch.

I don't think anyone can argue that Halo evolved the standard for FPS's on consoles, but I never got the combat evolved tag. Never called it by anything but Halo.
FakeShake
To be honest, i remember not even knowing it included the term "Combat Evolved" until after i had bought it. So yes, i believe it would have been just as successful.
MindCarrot
i didnt care about the title. i was blowing stuff up.

I'll be honest - most launch games for the original Xbox sucked. Halo was the saving grace. Not that this "syndrome" is only Microsoft's to bear, but they were entering a completely new market they haven't partaken on before, and they needed this to be successful.
After all, I'll always respect Halo for giving me longer levels. I was a single-player junkie back then. And the tagline creates awareness of the product in consumer's minds - I believe it did it's job. Because Halo alone doesn't shock anyone.

Personally, I think Halo is just another Generic Shooter. It doesn't bring anything fresh to the table. With the exception of regenerating health, it was just another FPS in my book. Something like Gears of War is a much better game if you ask me.
Having said that, I do not believe anyone other than Master Chief could have led the Xbox to stardom like Halo did. I understand that, at the time, First Person Shooters weren't the Go-To genre in gaming. And Microsoft really took a gamble with that decision, in retrospect. And I love the Xbox because of the fact that Halo opened up the floodgates for some really awesome FPS's on the 360. The Orange Box, Bioshock, Portal, Battlefield, Rainbow Six Vegas, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.
And it worked out great for them. I just wish they would openly recognize us, the Gamers, for being responsible for their success. Because as it stands, they haven't done a damn thing for us. Just look at the brand new and severely Over Priced Xbox 360 Games on Demand. Or the severely Over Priced and Unnecessary Avatar Clothing and Accessories. And how ALL of their Accessories have a bloated sales price of 300% or more. Or the fact that we are STILL being charged for Xbox Live. When the PS3's service is just as good (It really is 360 Fanboys), and for free.
Microsoft needs to stop pinching our wallets at every turn. And start thanking us before we get tired of them grabbing at our wallets every chance they get.

yeh... that's my problem w/ the xbox. if halo didn't exist (or even was multiplatform) - not that i hate halo... halo's awesome. i hate that it's a 360 exclusive- then the xbox may have stepped it up on the software side for the 360 instead of going all "buisness"
SIRsmackzALOT
this is why xbox 360 is so popular master chief made me buy an xbox which led to a 360 which led to all the great exclusives to 360, hey if thier making so much money on 1 console why can't we? which led to the release of gears and the buying of multi-platform games for the 360 xbox is now seen as a community friendly and shooter console (THANKS MASTER!!)

Enough Halo. Play a shooter that actually requires some skill like COD4.

While the oddworld games were indeed pretty cool and unique, I don't think Munch would've had the respect Master Chief has as being the xbox mascot. Halo did indeed bring FPS to another level and it's still bring new fresh things to the table. Can't wait for ODST.
As for Munch, he would've been worse off than poor Crash Bandicoot, who was at one point Sony's mascot before becoming multiplatform like Sonic.

lmao i remember playing a demo of munch it was fun when i was a lil kid but that game couldnt be the face of xbox when you say xbox halo comes to mind already

I must say from the stand point of consoles, Halo was combat evolved. Goldeneye had its wow factor for its time but Mario64 among others were the reason i begged my folks for a N64. Halo sold me on Xbox and all I kept saying was "how is this system able to handle all the crap that is going on in the game?" Halo is a system seller. If they left it to Munch I would have skipped Xbox and eventually got a PS2 laying my Dreamcast to the back burner. All this talk makes me want to crack the game out and play it on my 360.... gave my Xbox to my little brother but he wasnt getting Halo. HEHE!
Adrenalyn915
Halo is the only reason I bought an XBox, and the ONLY reason I got an XBox 360. It is also the same reason many of my friends have an XBox 360. And truthfully, in retrospect, it wasn't worth it. I rarely even turn on my XBox 360 anymore. The only reason I rarely turn it on is because I bought my 360 before my PS3, and I already have four controllers for it, and only two for my PS3 so far (which will change soon). So I use it when I have a group of friends over. Unless Micro$oft does something drastically different for their next console generation, I don't see myself buying yet another defective XBox console, only to play Halo.
FreshCut_T70
Its hard to imagine Munch a mascot for any system, hes a good character and the games are good but hes not mascot material. Master Chief is perfect for a more mature audience and seems to fit the Xbox. I remember reading about Halo in a game magazine back in 2000 and it was slated as a Dreamcast release too...that would've been different. I actually still have the Official DC mag that talks about upcoming releases in 2000 and Halo was one of the games along with Halflife, which you can download since the DC HL is a finished product...LOL Halo started out as an RTS and evolved into a FPS, makes sense since Bungie knew FPS games at the time and were reesponsible for the FPS series Marathon.

I imagine they are "depends"

I remember I didnt even buy the original Xbox with Halo:CE in mind. I was just excited about getting a new console with new games to play. Everybody said it would be a mistake to purchase the Xbox, but I did anyway. I remember picking up Halo on day one along with Dead or Alive and a few other games I cant even remember. I knew about Halo from reading different articles about it - but never thought it would end up being such a great game. IMO the first Halo is still the best one. Now looking back, I cant even imagine Microsoft lasting without a game like Halo:CE. Especially with that big ass anchor Microsoft called a controller! Thank the gaming gods for Halo: CE!! I think ima go play it right now. . .. . . . .
WhiteWolfAssassin
It's hard to say, because you never really known what could have happened if the Xbox had a different mascot. I do honestly believe however that without Halo, Microsoft would have had a tougher time pushing the console and not as much developers would have seen the potential in the Xbox. With Halo, Xbox become synonymous with first-person shooters and FPS became one of the most popular games for consoles. I suppose it's just impossible for me to imagine a gaming world without Halo and what would of become of the Xbox if Halo was supporting it. I can tell you I think it would have taken much longer for FPS to become popular on consoles, without Halo.
