It's unacceptable that Xbox Live, a trailblazing network in most regards, continues to limit users to a mere 100 friends. I rarely engage in online multiplayer and never foresaw reaching the cap, yet suddenly even I have almost 100 friends. The latest Xbox Live update brings a variety of new, welcomed features to the service, but continues to cap your friends list at 100. Why, Microsoft?
"It's a really good question," said Xbox Live chief of staff Steve Willet in a recent phone interview with me. "It is absolutely a continued focus and I am not [a] technical architect that you could tell you why it's capped there, but I will say it continues to come up, it is something that will not be forever, but I can't give you a real time horizon on when it's going to change."
Microsoft has previously said the cap is related to connections to the original Xbox. There are issues that will make this problem a growing one for Microsoft, though.
"One, I very much understand why people care so much about that [cap]," said Willet. "Two, I really think that when you look at the phenomenon that is happening around social networks in general, there is such an enormity of connecting with real people, your friends. I think as we bring these social networks on, the pressure will only get greater."
"I don't think that conversation is purposely being put the backburner," he concluded, "but there are technical reasons I can't really articulate for why we are still where we are. It doesn't mean that's how it's going to be forever, though."
For the time being, however, the cap remains at 100 friends. That needs to change.

I was going to my Uncle's house for a party and I ran into my little cousin and he asked me to come play 360 with him and I did. And when we were finished I was like, I'll friend you later when I get home. As it turn out he maxed out his friends with all the random people he meets online, oh well I guess we all can't be friends.

I find it annoying when you try to add someone, but the request gets denied because of him having 100 friends already.

100?!? I will never reach that and nor do I care to. I doubt if I actually know 100 people anymore. Heck even my graduating High School class only had 43 and I only wanted to talk to about 10 of them. (ugh reunion next year). I sure as heck don't know enough people to have that many fake friends. I don't friend with people I just sit and play a game with online.. Last time I friended someone on here to my PS3 they asked for my account to "redownload" a lost game, so I blackballed them. You know who you are.

100max becuase the system well lag same thing why they haven't added the search for you guys yet. I bet its got something to do with ram maybe?

This is probably because of the size they gave to the list on the 360 and the xbox. There would have to be a way to deliminate the two systems and make it so if your a xbox user that you would only see 100 people and on the 360 you see more.

i dont really care. ive never come close to the cap. i just keep friends i know in real life and some i met on live and thats about it. I have about 50 friends right now and i doubt i will ever reach the cap.

I don't really care for the cap going up. 100 friends limit is fine with me. I keep a tight firends list so I doubt I will ever reach 100 friends. and plus thats to many people chiming in oline. you xbox would get a huge workout saying whos online every 5 min.

Please Microsoft, raise it! I want to be Major Nelson's friend already!

Man, this comes in about 6 years too late. When I used to play a lot I had trouble with this sort of thing all the time and it really annoyed me. Now, I don't even remember who a decent portion of the people on my list are anymore.

SlickyFats & Spoonpwner nailed it - I don't have that many people I game w/ that I don't know in real life. It doesn't bother me a bit that the cap is 100.

Long live the Mutant League! SWEET PIC!

I've got 37. Nearly all of them were random invites within the first few months of signing up. Really don't need 100 spots.

I don't really add people that i meet on Live unless they are really cool. I'd say in the year I've had Live i have made a lot of friends. Honestly i don't like having people i don't know in my friends list unless they are funny or I play games with them a lot because they are good. I go through my friend's list once a month i'd say and i've never had more than 20 friends. I'm fine with the cap, however I have met some really cool people i couldn't add due to the cap, but it's okay, it's not like i'll die without my Live friends.

I have 96, but only know about 18 of them.
So I'd have to agree with Slicky Fats.

If you have a problem with 100 people, you have a small problem yourself. Unless you truly have above 75 from your school that you have added, 100 isn't a problem. If you do reach 100 people, just delete the many people i'm sure you don't play with. Microsoft, please spend your time on something more important. Perhaps a continuos stream of games for games on demand

I love the people who comment saying "I don't know that many people, 100 is too much we don't need anymore." Just because your either antisocial or do not wish to talk on xbox live or play games with people, does not mean it is the same for everyone.
I play several different games which results in several friends for each game. I am hitting the cap constantly and having to remove old friends. Sure there are arguably more important things to work on. But this is something that should have been fixed awhile ago and should be able to be done without taking too long if they actually wanted to do it and not just "discuss" it.
If we all followed your theory, I never play Gears of War 2 or Rainbow Six, so they should stop making those games because I do not need them.

@ Patrck K,...or anyone else,...
S0 you have 100 people on your list. What's it like when you sign on and your 360 has to start popping up 60-70 some names?
Foxx_Racer
I can't stand it. U finally find some one worth playing with then *BOOM* their friends list is full.
