LucasArts Teasing X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter AnnouncementLucasArts' two-pronged attempt to revitalize their classics with The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and Tales of Monkey Island appears to be a success. As part of a follow-up interview with LucasArts president Darrell Rodriguez about plans for the months ahead, I asked Rodriguez for thoughts on a return of the company's lauded X-Wing and Tie Fighter flight sim series.

His answer?

"We don’t have any announcements now, but stay tuned," said Rodriguez. "We will soon….."

By the way, that's his number of dots, not mine. We conducted the interview over e-mail. Five dots is far more mysterious than three dots, so I'm willing to bet I'm onto something here.

Whether it's a full-on remake ala The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition or an addition to the company's growing Steam lineup…well, who cares? Either one would be the first acknowledgement of a major part of LucasArts' legacy in a long, long time.

The last major release in the series was X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter X-Wing Alliance. I missed that one.

That would be t!ts. X-wing will always hold a special place in my heart as the first flying game that got me addicted to the genre.

The last game in the series was "X-Wing : Alliance" wasn't it? had amazing multiplayer in that as well, but the story mode was truly fantastic.

Any new x-wing/tie-fighter games would be fantastic, especially say on iphone!

if they updated the graphics that would be cool. But it will be cool just to play them again.

I would love to see a good Star Wars fighter sim on the consoles. I remember I used to play them back on the N64. But lost track of them in the next gen and haven't seen any good ones for this gen. I really hope they come out with one. I can't wait to blow up a Star Destroyer in HD haha.

I wonder how well it would translate to a console. The control configuration would have to be insanely nuanced.

You could get very complex situations where you prioritize your system repairs (like the ejector seat...), increase your top speed by draining your shields and lasers, and occasionally divert power directly from laser banks to shields. I always loved it when I could get a beam system installed, because I could store the energy on the beam to recharge shields and lasers. Then, I would only bring up the tractor beam on a charge just powerful enough to intermittently screw with fighters flight control.

They would be more likely to overhaul the whole system than try to fit everything into a console port.

Why didn't you ask Darrell about SWBF3?

A New X-Wing TIE Fighter game would bring me great pleasure. I have no complaints about playing it with a gamepad, if that's the way it ends up going. I played the originals with a mouse :'(

AND walked to school, uphill both ways, through waist-high snow.

interesting, ign.com has some off-screen, leeked, videos so a star wars themed air craft in the video section or Star Wars Battlefield: 3 (Rumored). i wonder if that was actually early production of this game? The footage was soon to be pulled by request of Lucas arts

Oh my god! When people ask me what game I played and then replayed over and over again, my answer is ALWAYS the Collector's Edition of TIE Fighter. I don't think I can play it anymore, my system is too much for it, but TIE Fighter had a great story and was completely action packed. I've never been more immersed in a game than I was with TIE Fighter. I loved flying the TIE Defender and hitting the boost button (what was it called? "NANDS?"). Can't help gushing over this game and possible news of it coming back.
