If you managed to watch David Jones’ APB presentation from this year’s Develop conference without thinking, “I must play this, please,” then I suggest putting out an APB for your joy center.
Anyway, Jones and his team are doing some truly impressive things with their crime-based MMO, but right now, the biggest question mark has to do with the game’s monthly subscription model. When VG247 pressed Jones about it at Develop, Jones was as cagey as ever, saying, “We’re not going the normal ‘you have to subscribe to play the game every month’ rout. What we haven’t said is which route we are going, and in some respects we’re still looking.”
This seems to suggest that the game could feature some kind of “pay for as much as you play” model, which would certainly benefit those less hardcore fans intrigued by the overall concept of the game, but who maybe don’t want to make it a lifestyle like more dedicated MMO players might. I for one would love this kind of sliding pay scale, because I’m not an MMO person, but from what I've seen of this game so far, I might just have to pull the trigger when the game is released early next year.
What kind of subscription model would you like to see for APB?

I would like one where every month, you pay nothing. You pay a 60$ starting fee. Wouldn't that be great? I could understand us playstation users paying, because were playing for free, but the xbox users are already paying plenty.
RRODisBack
Let me get this straight, you have to pay M$ first to play the game online and then you have to pay Realtime Worlds to play the game online too?!?! WOW!
GODS1N
this game is still on 360 right?

i agree jake, ive never been able to get into mmos. the whole paying every month thing has always sold me on that. but this game has got me very intrigued.
ral1121
but what if it comes to the xbox 360?
Were already paying for the Xbox Live Subscription.

Play for free (minus cost of game and xbl or whatever) - Pay for enhanced features (badass gun, car, base, levelup quicker, etc,etc,etc)....you'd still get plenty of guns, cars and the rest...just not the premium ones.....the game would need to be fully playable though (none of that stop you midway to buy the missions crud...side missions maybe...main quests should be playble to everyone)
It seems to be pretty much the only way non-WOW mmo's have been able to survive....and again...a lot more people are willing to pay up for the quality when they've already gotten a taste...

The problem with doing an mmo in that fashion is you spend as much or more if you want to be competitive or get a party.
If you only have free gear you are gonna be on the bottom of the totum pole,so you fork over the cash for decent gear or waste your sixty bucks on the original purchase.
Bad news though for 360 owners either way I guess.Could be a good game however.
jamie543
on the main site it says the game hasnt been planned for consoles as of yet but they are looking at the possibilty. So i doubt its gonna be on the 360 - atleast not right away.
redheadjhawk
To attract people away from their consoles, like me, it would need to be cheap no matter what method you choose.

..... hmm indeed.

I think it should be Buy to Play like Guild Wars. You buy the core game and its free to play, but if there is a new expansion pack. You only buy it if you want to ot you just keep on playing what you have for free. I don't know why more developers and publishers don't go this way.
Normally you buy the game and pay for subscription or you download a game for free and play for free, but have an item shop with virtual goods. With Buy to Play, even if there is an expansion pack ever year. You're only paying say for the expansion once a year. and not have to thing about paying a subscription or buying virtual items. Before MMOs that was how it was done and still is done in some other genres. I

@purewitz: Whoa, someone on this site knows what Guild Wars is.
I have to agree, I think a F2P model would encourage more people to buy the game. It would keep people playing if it was any good and they would be coming back for more expansions, prestigious gear and whatnot.
swede7754
I have to agree with purewitz, setting out expansions like in Guild Wars is a good idea.

i hope it lives up to the buzz surounding it, it does sound interesting so far.

ive never tried an mmo because of the pay every month crapp but apb might change my mind.
Waffles66
Pay2Play sucks. It what keeps me and my friends from playing MMOs. (other then the Free MMOs we play)
I really want this game, though.
TSuperfly
how about pay once play forever? like Guildwars!
gravy666
I hate paying for MMOs. Not getting free Internet is bad enough.
aPoLiS117
a "weekend warriors" model, that would be good. like $5 to play Friday 12:01AM to Monday 11:59PM every weekend of the month. i would totally play if they did that cause i have like no time during the week : ( or they could just do a "pay for what you play" where they charge like 20 cents per hour of play or something.
and to all the people that want it to be free; so do I! but i know i wouldn't like it as much in the long run. the subscriptions go to keeping the servers up, fix bugs and make expansions. that being said the expansions should be free, i shouldn't have to pay just for a few more guns and a stupid hat.
BigDogW
if you watched E3 it was said the game will be released for both the pc and the xbox. for you PS3 owners you get nothing
