which Bethesda Softworks just released for free as part of the game's anniversary is big. Like, really big. How big? Try 62 square miles. Even though Bethesda's RPG series has appeared to become bigger with each sequel, the opposite is actually the case; Daggerfall's much, much bigger than The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind or The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

.
I checked in with Bethesda to do a little math. Here's how it breaks down, but keep in mind these numbers are approximations, not exact calculations:
- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion -- 16 square miles
- The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind -- 6 square miles
- The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall -- 62 square miles
Bethesda wasn't able to come up with the milage for The Elder Scrolls: Arena

, the first game. The numbers, as Bethesda pointed out to me, can be a bit misleading, though. For example: much of Daggerfall's content was randomly generated.
"Because we change the scale of each game," explained marketing VP Pete Hines, "the size doesn’t necessarily compare from game to game. In other words, how fast you can move across the world has a lot to do with how big it seems."
Thanks to Internet magic, I tracked down fan-made maps of each game, too! Check it out:
The Elder Scrolls: Arena

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Still, 61 square miles. Wow!

Patrick, I believe you have the Daggerfall and Morrowind map mixed up.

Darkflame123
why is this crap on the wii tab?
salec
Your facts are wrong Patrick. Daggerfall was NOT 62 square miles but rather 62,394 square miles with over 15,000 towns and over 750,000 non-player characters.
mckin3228
wow the map of Tamriel is really wrong if Daggerfall is that bit it only looks a bit bigger than morrowind.
BlitzSage
I'm at a loss. How do they calculate this?
Draq
Does anyone know if they are working on a new one? I played the crap out of Oblivion, I hope there is a new one in a couple years.
MrKrinklez
I'm not so sure Morrowind was only 6 Sq. miles. I'll have to see if I can figure that out myself next time I pop out the old Xbox.
mls201991
when are they ever gonna make elder scrolls 5
charles_dysan
I have always wondered about this, and i can definitely see how Morrowind is 6sqmi. I think it feels larger whenever you are trudging along between 2 towns with no boat or silt strider access at the beginning of the game with Speed of 20. The world feels much different once you get the Boots of Blinding Speed, or a version i made in the construction set without the drawbacks,
skwareballz
You know that Elder Scrolls 5 has to be in production by their main team while the smaller teams are cranking out the Fallout 3 DLC to make it seem like they aren't taking forever to make a new game. Brillant strategy from a dev that now has id graphics for their next game. Now we just have to guess which top-notch actor will voice in the next game...
BlitzSage
Okay, does anyone know how they calculate this?
REAPER094
does any 1 know is they are going to make a new 1 pls tell me

that's so weird, i just popped in oblivion last night for the first time since last october. i've got 50 hours into it and still haven't beaten it.
doodle_billy
dude i spend so much time on these games. i had almost 500 hours put into oblivion. and fall out 3 is getting up there too
Lord_Valgor
First of all yes there is going to be an Elder Scrolls V, when is it coming? probably in 2010 or 2011 according to Bethesda. The way they calculate it is by measuring what in game distance would be equivalent to a RL foot or meter then convert to miles and kilometers respectively. Also I don't really believe wiki on the "fact" that daggerfall is 62,000 sq miles because that is outrageously giant but 62 miles sounds big yet not too big. you can all read about it here:
Size: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T he_Elder_Scrolls_II:_Daggerfal l
TES 1-5: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T he_Elder_Scrolls

Daggerfall was probably the first game I invested 100's of hours into. It really is much bigger than any of the games that have come out since. The main quest line was so buggy that it was pretty much impossible to complete but the sheer amount of exploration blew my young mind.
DarkChaos67
if u look at the whole tamriel map then oblivion is basedd in the bigest country, cyrodiil, plus oblivion also has shivering isles and oblivion its self. but daggerfall is based in only a little part of hammerfall and high rock so just by the map its smaller. but maybe im wrong because they could of made it so mouch bigger back during daggerfall then when oblivion came out make the countries smaller. i dont know i didnt make but its just my opinion.
bugmenot150
i can confirm that the 62 miles is wrong. Daggerfall is most definitely ~63,125 square miles - i don't have all of the calculations memorized, but if you go to alt.games.daggerfall you'll find more information, including the speed of the player character. Remember, the Daggerfall map is broken up into provinces which are 1:1 scale models with how they should be according to the lore, and make up most of High Rock and Hammerfell - *much* more than 62 square miles. If you followed the lore from old games about the Imperial City, you would know it was supposed to hold millions upon millions of residents - which it didn't in Oblivion, because they didn't build it to scale. However, Daggerfall is built to scale. etc etc etc - Daggerfall is freaking huge, and the best Elder Scrolls game ever, and one of the best games ever
Signed,
Summer Glau (P.S. - Don't forget to petition Fox to bring back Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles!)
