'Spider-Man 4': Yet Another Writer Hired, Third Time's A Charm?

It seems that Spider-Man 4 is having a hard time getting a script written. It is being reported that Writer/Director, Gary Ross has been brought on board as the THIRD person to pen the upcoming sequel. Having been preceded by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and David Lindsay-Abaire (Inkheart), Ross will take a crack at a task in which they apparently have failed.

The move also reunites Tobey Maguire with Ross, who wrote and directed Maguire vehicles, Seabiscuit and Pleasantville. It will also put on hold, a collaboartion between Ross and Maguire called Tokyo Suckerpunch, and a biography on legendary cyclist, Lance Armstrong.

This static behavior and personnel changes are likely sending the "spider-senses" of fans into disarray over the state of the franchise. Ross may be an established commodity, but one thing he clearly does not have on his resume, is action films. (Although he is attached to pen the script to the upcoming remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon.) It's possible that he may have been brought on board because of his connection to Maguire and a desire to collaborate further with him.

Whoever ultimately ends up writing this script has a huge task, given the mess of a storyline that was left at the end of the last film. It seems that almost every conventional avenue in the Spider-Man mythos is left as either a dead-end, or has been altered into an unusable state. The task of writing this script isn't just about who can create compelling drama (although that will obviously help), it will be about being able to pick up the pieces and putting it into some workable form.

Besides being tainted by the last film, it will also have the obstacle of possibly being overshadowed by newer, more exciting comic film franchises like The Avengers (and its related spinoff films) which will arrive in theaters roughly around the same time that Spider-Man 4 is planned to hit. The Sony-backed Spider-Man franchise will ironically enough, find itself competing with heavily-hyped Paramount-backed Marvel counterparts who will have a lot more momentum behind them.

To delay the film, would also be costly, as the franchise will be far too obsolete to continue, being a decade-old. (You do remember Superman 4, right?) Also, frankly, the stars of the film will be too old for their parts. (Tobey Maguire will be playing teenager/early twenty-something, Peter Parker at nearly 36 years old on Spider-Man 4's proposed May 11, 2011 release.) Time, therefore, is also not on their side.

The best thing that at this point could possibly happen, is that the film is scrapped altogether. Sam Raimi -- you gave us two great Spidey films...be proud...move on to other projects. In a perfect world, Sony could work out a deal with Marvel films to do a reboot a few years down the line, which takes place in the same Marvel "movie-verse" of Iron Man and The Avengers. (That's a pretty tall order, btw.)

"This static behavior and personnel changes are likely sending the "spider-senses" of fans into disarray over the state of the franchise." - trust me, spidey fans' (myself included) spider sense has been more than just tingling since the last film. these guys trying out more than one writer for the fourth film ain't gonna make it buzz anymore than it already does.

honestly I like the latter idea of allowing spidey 4 to simply not exist and having marvel and a new director step in later on to adapt spidey as well as the x-men into a gigantic marvel movie verse with the avengers...

but that makes way too much sense

I don't want a fourth film anyways. The 3rd was too scatterbrained. Just leave it alone. We can always revisit it again in the future with other actors. Criminey.

Keep it simple... bring back Doc Oc. Let's face it, he's not really dead. And maybe finally introduce The Lizard.

Writers are constantly brought in at a variety of times during the screenwriting process. Bring in a fresh person and throw around some new ideas, that is always a good way to re-vamp the series. Also, the script hasn't been in production too long, so just give it time.

Is there a reason they just haven't offered it to Michael Chabon again? He is the reason SM2 was as great as it was. Anyone involved in the SM3 debacle should be banned from the Sony lot. INCLUDING Raimi.

Are the editors on this site stupid.I don't think that Tobey Maguire will be playing a still teenage Peter Parker. Its called story progression. He'll more than likely play an older Peter Parker thats about to move on to the next chapter of his life.I can't believe people honestly think hes gonna be the same character in the first film. This actually happens in the comics to or did you actually think he stays the same age and fights the same villians and same senerios over and over.If that was the case the comic books life spans would of end along time ago.

The best part of spiderman 3 was when he danced in the club and in the streets. That made me laugh my ass off but the rest of the movie sucked. Plus the dancing has nothing to do with spiderman. It was a give or take with those particuar scenes but the action was okayaya.

You want to know how to make Spiderman 4 epic?

    1. Hire either J. Michael Straczynski or Peter David to do the script.
    2. Fire/kill/maim Tobey McGuire and Kristen Dunst.
    3. Do not give in to whinny fanboys about who to include/exclude into/from the movie.
    4. Same as above only replace "fanboys" with studio executives/producers.
    5. Do not deviate from the script.

    BAM! Great movie.

So easy, a caveman can do it.

    6. Do not allow ANY dance scenes
    7. NO flipping the hair the other way to show how evil someone is
    8. NO EXtreme flying skateboard goblins running around
    9. NO Venom, Carnage or any other symbiote (Yea Venom is cool, but OBVIOUSLY cant be done well yet
    10. REBOOT REBOOT REBOOT
    11. Make Spider-Man sarcastic and funny
    12. GET RID OF KRISTEN DUNCE

    BAM Great Movie

Reboot the series or forget spider man 3 ever happend and star off from spider man 2. Dont do anything stupid like giving peter a daughter its to early for any thing like that. Why would they put venom in Spider man 3 And only give him 20 min of screen time then you kill him. Dosen't venom kill sand man after biteing him in the comic whats going on here. Any way Venom should have been the main antagonist. Marvel has to gain the rights of there comics back so movies like spider man 3 dont happen again

No. A bold director must simply ignore the past. Yjr viewer must in the first second be thrown into a panic and they must not be allowed to breath until the hook is set. Must start with base fear, like fire or falling. You do not see who you are, only that you are falling, and fire, trying to not fall into the fire... Get the to relate to the sensation of falling and the certainty of death.

Its Peter Parket's voice but you do not see him, you see what he sees. Force the user to consider the heat.

Spidey's hand comes up and anther, he's un-jamming the spidey silk jets and then, suddenly, he is casting a desperate net at a distant rusty beam that has suddenly appeared, create suspense, will the silk hold?

His voice narratrs his fear, no our fear, and only after he has pulled an incredible save from certain death does the camera pull back to reveal a scuffed and dirty costume containing the wisecracking webspinner.

Once you have them that far in, you jump back to frame the beginning, set up the plot and characters.

Old storylinrd will no longer be in their mind. You made them BE Spiderman for those few minutes.

    Good Luck!

What do I think should happen now? Do what the Hulk did and pretend the previous movie didn't happen.

Just start over, I'm a massive Spider-man fan and I was almost in tears at how terrible number 3 was, I say just re-do the whole thing!

Also, please use Carnage this time. D:
