The hottest tech rumor of the day: Apple has purchased a crap-ton of cameras from far-eastern factories with the intention of installing them in upcoming versions of the iPod. Supposedly, even the iPod Nano could sport a video and still camera in the future.
I'm not sure whether a camera-equipped Nano could be cost-efficient enough to make sense, but the inclusion of cameras in the next-generation of iPod Touches seems incredibly likely. The iPod touch runs on the same software as the iPhone, so including a camera wouldn't be a technical leap, and taking video with your MP3 player would be very, very hot.
If this rumor turns out to be true, every other manufacturer of cheaper digital cameras is likely terrified, particularly the makers of Flip video cameras. Right now, the iPod Touch and the Flip Mino HD cost about the same: $229. If Apple's brings the iPod's excellent video camera to the iPod Touch, it seems like there is no reason to buy a Flip. While the Flip takes marginally better quality images, the Touch will likely come with on-device editing and uploading to YouTube, internet browsing, email, bajillions of games and other apps at the app store, oh, and it's a music player as well.
No word yet on when these will hit the market (if they're real), but I'd guess sooner rather than later.
I don't have an iPhone because the monthly charges are ridiculous, and I use an iPod classic as an MP3 player because of the harddrive size, but if Apple releases a Touch with a camera, I'm in line, that day, to buy it. Having one device that takes decent video and plays music is exactly what I want.
What about you? What MP3 player do you use, and would you trade it in for a Touch if it had a camera equipped?

Totally with you SJ! I love the iPhone, but I can't stand AT&T. I'd get an updated iPod Touch this year, for sure.

One of my primary reasons for wanting an iPhone is the camera and the ability to upload pictures directly to twitter and other services. I currently carry my 1st gen iPod Touch everywhere I go, often wishing I had a camera. If the next gen comes with a Camera, and perhaps a boost in capacity (perhaps a 64 gig) then I will definitely settle for that instead of having to switch to AT&T for the iPhone. (If the camera works as well as the one in the iPhone that is.)

i have an ipod touch 2g and i can do practically anything on it, except take pictures and make calls. i can definitely see them putting cameras in too because i can already upload pictures i have downloaded on my ipod to whatever social networking/picture website i want to. for that reason alone, i could see them putting in cameras in the 3g touch.

THIS IS THE GRESTEST NEW EVER this week

Johnson I currently use a Creative Zen, because it fit my budget at the time and has plenty other features that the Touch doesn't have. However if Apple does release this with a camera and ups the amount of gigs then I THINK that may be enough to push me over the edge (I also use a 4th gen 40gb iPod).

I didn't know people still bought MP3 players. For a long time now cell phone have had the same if not better functionality than most MP3 players. I had an iPhone but felt ripped off by its lack of some of the more basic functionality. I just use my cell phone for my camera, MP3 player, satellite radio, home phone, & tether for internet. It has a 32Gb micro SD card so it hold more than most MP3 players also.

I LOVE THIS! I current have an ipod touch 1st generation, lately I have been thinking about upgrading to the 2nd generation. But now that I hear this I am definitely going to wait and get myself the 3rd generation, that's if the rumors are true. I agree with (ZekeTheSquirrel) I would stay with my phone and just get this itouch and avoid the hassel of switching to AT&T

Makes sense - it's the last input method I can think of for use in games. Except for maybe some buttons...

I have the 1st gen Touch. It's getting a bit ridiculous that we're closer and closer to having a phoneless iTouch (well, if you have Skype and headphones with a mic, it's kinda like a phone then). With a camera, they'll be pretty much the exact same (aside from the mouth piece and cool backside). I need a new iTouch anyway unless Verizon gets it's own version of the iPhone anytime soon.

I just bought a refurb 2nd gen Touch and right before I bought it I thought that the touch would be soo much better if it had a camera. Now my prayers to the apple gods could be answered (hopefully).

If the camera on the new itouch is the same as on the iphone then you might as well not waste your money. That thing is a piece of crap. And it amuses me to see people run out and waste money on Apple's products every 6 months when they make one minor change and then re-release it.

but i doubt that it would support video. wouldn't they want to leave that exclusively with the 3gs and wouldn't prove that the iphone 3g could have supported video since the ipod touch is weaker than the 3gs
either way i would definetly buy it since i just lost my old ipod touch in a cab.
