Hope everyone had a nice 4th of July. Here's some console-war flame-bait to get the week started right!
According to Valve head Doug Lombardi, the PlayStation 3 version of The Orange Box

is inferior to the 360 and the PC versions. "If we were customers of that product on PlayStation, we'd feel like we sort of got the stepchild version of the product while the guys on the PC and the 360 got the sweet version of it," Lombardi said.
Furthermore, Lombardi says his company isn't interested in releasing inferior versions of its games, so until Valve gets a PS3 team together, they won't work on that platform:
"We've run a couple of experiments over the years of PlayStation in general; we did Half-Life on PS2 with an outside company and then we did Orange Box PS3 with an outside company. We weren't able to deliver the same type of product on PS3 and PS2 for that matter that we were on the 360 and PC. Until we have the ability to get a PS3 team together, until we find the people who want to come to Valve or who are at Valve who want to work on that, I don't really see us moving to that platform."
These quote echo things Valve's Gabe Newell told us. Gabe said:
"Until we can do a better job than we have [with PS3 games], I’m sort of hesitant to go back and screw them again. So, I want to make sure when we have customers on the PS3 they don’t end up in the sort of second class citizen that I feel that they’ve been by what we did originally with The Orange Box."
As a PS3 owner, I hope that this quote from Lombardi indicates that Valve plans on putting together the most kick-ass development team ever to put out PS3 games, but, honestly, it doesn't look like that's the plan. It seems more likely that Valve will bow out of releasing their games for the PlayStation 3 all together, which is a huge blow: Valve games are almost universally high-quality, awesome titles.
This kind of thing really doesn't look good for Sony -- sure, a decade-long product cycle is nice, but if big developers drop your system in the first half of its existence, it doesn't look good for the second half.

I love lamp let the war begin!
blasphemous

Scottydsntknow
sad to hear this, PS3 owners are missing out on some fun titles

This isnt really news. This is something people in gaming have known for a while. Halflife and Orange Box for PS sucked.
Valve is a PC gaming company and thats how they make there money. PC games and Steam, which is a PC service. The only reason there games end up on the 360 is because its an easy transition that makes there product available to 30 million more people for little to no cost (not counting L4D2 which Im sure MS is giving them cash to do).
I would love to see Valve product on PS3, especially since PS3 has shown with Epic that it would also support the MOD community (which 360 doesn't), but I agree I just dont see it happening, unless Valve gets bought by one of the superpowers (EA or Ubi, Activision already partnered with Blizzard).

yay. more "we can't do it cause its hard so we won't try" from valve.

Well I guess Valve sucks too now, right Sony fanboys? Just you wait people Sony Fanboys are going to spend the day trashing Valve.

Sucks for PS3 although there is no excuse why valve cant make it the same as the 360 or PC. Could imagine if valve made a game for the jaguar. In all its 64* bit goodness. * total combination of multiple processors. I mean they did a good job with the dreamcast game and last gen games. oh well

I don't understand why Valve gets so much attention over this. There are plenty of companies that don't develop for the 360 for the exact same reasons.
They develop a game for the PS3, and it would take too much effort on their part to port it to the 360 or PC. The potential gains simply don't outweigh the probable losses in development time and human resources.
Maybe I'm misinterpreting the explanations on both sides of the arguement here. If I am, would someone clear it up?
RRODisBack
I thought Valve was supposed to be one of the better dev teams yet they are the ONLY ones who can't develop on the PS3?

As a PS3 owner, I'm not sure what the point in saying stuff like this is. I guess it's a mea culpa but it's a mea culpa without any indication that they will "do right." The way they're talking about it sounds like Bush's "horizons" for leaving Iraq, which were vague enough to make you wonder if there were any plans at all. This certainly doesn't make me feel any better about anything. If a crappy version of a product makes me feel like a "second class citizen" than what the hell am I supposed to feel like when there isn't even an apparent desire to make a product for me to buy?

Maybe Valve should spend less time commenting on their inability to code for PS3 and less time sequelizing a game they promised DLC for much, much, much too soon and more time MAKING THE NEXT F-ING HALF LIFE EPISODE. I find it hard to believe they can sequelize L4D in a year but can't make one lousy Half Life episode.
quicksand
Why do companies keep screwing PS3 in multi-player games when PS3 is technically superior to XBox 360? I'm not trying to start a flamewar, but PS3 is more capable of better graphics thanks to Blu-Ray and such. So, Why does Rainbow Six look so terrible on PS3 and so sweet on XBox360? Why is Orange Box inferior? Valve has stated before that they don't want to do games on PS3 because of the extra work coding. Just sounds lazy.

Vavle wouldn't be saying this if every interview they had didn't ask for it. It's not like Valve is running out to tell people.
PS3 is expensive, time consuming and difficult to get right. If they don't want to wast their money on it then that's their decission.
Postal1111
It must really suck to own a PS3, glad I was smart enough to buy a 360.
This is just one more step towards the PS3 completely becoming a "fancy blu-ray player".
Yamato101
Half Life 2, both Episodes & Portal are not as bad on PS3 as everyone says.
TEAM FORTRESS 2 ON THE OTHER HAND..............

Well first off this 'news' is so old. Amazing G4 writers spend their time rehashing the same played out stories. I'm just glad I didn't buy the Orange Box...I've had it in my hands on numerous occasions headed to the checkout and for one reason or another always put it back on the shelf. Not sure what is 'bad' about the PS3 version I've never seen a side by side comparison...now that'd be some decent journalism...
BertSaxby
Oh wait...somebody did...on Spike. LOL.

Eh. Doesn't look much different. A little fuzzy maybe and some color variations

EA complain at first about the ps3 but now they are getting alot better on the ps3. If value can't do it and they have to pay outsider to make game port. Than that just mean they are still relying on out of date PC and software to make there games. PC and 360 code are preety similar so its not hard to make games for it. Oh well its not like i'm dieing to see what they have in store. I'm still waiting on ff and GoW3 to come out. Best of luck for value... As long as they still have a pc one than ill get it on that. Still get the best of both worlds
