Has MySpace become an electronic ghetto? That's the contention of social analyst Danah Boyd. Boyd, speaking at New York's Democracy Forum, said, "It wasn't just anyone who left MySpace to go to Facebook...We might as well face an uncomfortable reality ... what happened was modern day 'white flight'."
According to Boyd, the people left of MySpace are "more likely to be brown or black and to have a set of values that terrifies white society."
Boyd surveyed young users of social networks and found that people on Facebook look down on people on MySpace, and view MySpace as less refined and less cultured than Facebook. "Any high school student who has a Facebook page will tell you MySpace users are more likely to be barely educated and obnoxious," she said.
Craig (17, California) was quote by Boyd thusly:
The higher castes of high school moved to Facebook. It was more cultured, and less cheesy. The lower class usually were content to stick to MySpace. Any high school student who has a Facebook will tell you that MySpace users are more likely to be barely educated and obnoxious. Like Peet’s is more cultured than Starbucks, and Jazz is more cultured than bubblegum pop, and like Macs are more cultured than PC’s, Facebook is of a cooler caliber than MySpace.
Personally, I switched from MySpace to Facebook for a couple reasons, and they weren't class or race based. I switched to Facebook because MySpace started loading slower, and also because MySpace's policy of allowing people to alter their pages dramatically resulted in un-navigable sites that took way too long to load, automatically queued up music I didn't want to hear and generally broke every rule of aesthetics and graphic design imaginable. But, yeah, it is true that Facebook seems more genteel, more sophisticated and less idiotic than MySpace.
I think Boyd's analogy between real "white flight" and the switch from one network to another to be interesting, but doesn't hold up under close scrutiny. One of the main reasons middle-class flight from the inner-city was so problematic was because of the people who were left behind by an unwillingness or inability to take flight themselves. But online, anyone can abandon their social network and start up in another one with little sacrifice. So the online class system is much more fluid than the real life class system.
Also, moving to the suburbs may have been the ultimate dream of past generations of white people, but now everyone is moving back into the cities because, lets face it, suburbs really suck. I really don't think a similar return will happen to MySpace.
What do you think? Do you think people on MySpace and people on Facebook are of different classes? What about users of Beebo, Friendster and other social networking site?

Third Paragraph, second line, twelfth word should be changed to Facebook. But overall I agree with this, but that's just from my experience.

So, reading this post(and source link post), it seems to me that these are two white males that don't really talk to many "black or brown people."
Apparently, ghettos are filled with only lower class BLACKS AND MEXOS who aren't trying to do anything with they're lives.
Some people are born into unfortunate situations. That doesn't mean they're lower than you because of it.

Grammar error: '...people on Facebook look down on people on MySpace, and view MySpace as less refined and less cultured than MySpace.'
And view MySpace as less refined... than MySpace? Don't you mean Facebook?

I liked myspace because of its customization and html coding that I wrote myself, but now there's too much glitter and flashing crap on everyones profile and yes the loading times dramatically increased with videos and music and graphics all loading at once, its a massacre for some people pages. Mine is still quite simple and yet I've lost much respect for myspace as a company 'cause of the spam friend requests and band pages... people competing to see how many 'friends' they can have... its childish almost. The move to Facebook is came naturally as an escape from the 'ghetto' myspace has become, not based on race/ethnicity but on the ability of control and privacy of Facebook. The simpler design maybe be less customizable to the prior, and yet sometimes keeping things simple is the best approach.

Well now it's the third line, sixth word, and the pictures different.

i personally left myspace to go to facebook...but not for this reason at all, i just found it confusing to navigate at times.Boyd is absurd for even thinking of something like this, is she a racist? How dare her say something like that...

Thanks for the editing help, everyone. My posts are living, breathing documents, like the constitution, and thus are subject to change. :)

I feel I should also include that I, myself, am Latino and find it almost insulting to say something in the nature of "I belong on myspace as an underclass to facebook.' Either way, people are free to choose what they wish and opinionate what they feel.

I still have my Myspace account, although I haven't been at the site for a while now (at least 7 months)... I honestly don't really care about those social networking sites, for me they start off exciting and fun to chat with your friends and share photos but then it quickly loses steam and hence I haven't on for a while. A few of my friends have Facebook and they want me to join, but since I see them all the time what's the point? Even they haven't been sharing or doing what the site offers lately... I believe that it's more of an acquired taste to really enjoy being part of that community... So, to answer the question I don't know where I fit in?

I left Myspace for the fact too many wanna be rappers and ghetto people. Now i have facebook

I wish Facebook stayed as a network for just college kids. I hate these high school brats that migrated from Myspace onto Facebook.

I have an account on each one and haven't been on either in months. They are both waste of time imo. Face book feels like it is less customizable and restricting. While Myspace does feel rather childish and gimmicky. But thats just my opinion and obviously millions of other people seem to disagree.

People think Transformers 2 is racist, but this? This is way more racist. Listen to that dude, he says MySpace is filled with people who are black and brown and obnoxious and dumb, while those on Facebook are white and smart and sophisticated? That is a racist comment if any. I know a lot of white people and smart people with MySpaces (and sure, we may all be teens, but that doesn't mean anything), and I know "black or brown" people on Facebook that aren't that smart. I feel both are pretty diverse, at least when it comes to racism. Age is a different story...
And personally, I don't mind MySpace. I like them both equally.

Actually, the deal-breaker for MySpace was even simpler:
The site was initially defaulted so that music started as soon as you loaded someone's site. Not cool when you're at work.
Plus, they focused on the wrong stuff (music industry/entertainment) when they should've focused on what was more important: fixing their busted ass code and lasering in on the social networking elements.
Facebook currently succeeds because it focuses on social networking, and it's more proactive about evolving with the pace of the Internet.
Think about this: MySpace spent ridiculous money on expanding internationally and getting people to translate its content. Facebook allows users to localize its site into their language and has an internal wiki. All volunteer-based. Yet another example of how one business does things smarter, and the other drags itself down.

myspace code is like a trainwreck, but the main reason i left was all the spam. I don't get spammed on facebook. Also when some 17 year old kid tells me macs are more cultured then a p.c. I want to drop kick him in the face.

Why is this even news? First off Facebook and twitter are more commonly afflicted by Hackers/Worms than Myspace now.
And even if that werent true, who cares!? do people lack a social life this much that they need to squabble over a website that lets you pretend you actually have friends and a reason to live?
"Social" networking has gotten out of hand, end of story.

Myspace is still alive? I thought the Facebook Jets had killed off those Myspace Sharks once and for all!

WOW...! RACISM TO THE MAX.
GO WHITE AMERICA, TOO BAD YOU'RE RULED BY A BLACK MAN WHO IS SURE AS HELL 4 TIMES MORE INTELLIGENT THAN THE PREVIOUS PRESIDENT.
So much for "... barely educated".
