We haven't heard much about what Criterion Games is working on, outside of new downloadable content for Burnout Paradise

. Now we do. During the William Blair Growth Stock Conference this morning, which I managed to listen to via webcast, EA chief operating officer John Pleasants confirmed Criterion has been assigned to an unannounced Need For Speed game.
"We've taken the Burnout team and combined it with our Need For Speed franchise," he said, speaking on EA's efforts to reboot the lagging racing franchise. "So we now have that in our favor because that Burnout team is probably one of the more online-centric and notably high-quality game developers that we have out at Criterion."
I didn't hear any other details on the game during the webcast, but confirmation that Criterion is taking a crack at Need For Speed is enough. Sounds like win to me.

As an unabashed fan of ev'rything Criterion has put out i am both extremely happy to see what direction they take the series in and a little concerned it might fail but i'm betting it comes up aces.

As long as they don't turn the franchise into Need For Burnout I don't care who makes Need For Speed games. Just keep what the series is known for and make it fun.

if criterion can't turn this series around then it could be the end of the need for speed.

This may or may not be a good thing, if Criterion treat this game with as much care as the burnout series it may be a breath of fresh air for the Need of Speed franchise. I really liked the fact that I could modify and customize cars, as well as get into police chases along with the street racing.

Need for Speed: Burnout. The Criterion team could definitely add another dimension to a title that is more or less diluted.

umm...just a thought, but what if EA kills burnout altogether so criterion can make ONLY nfs games? that would suck...hopefully that won't be the case

Yay, hopefully they can make a next-gen Most Wanted/Underground 2. Burnout Paradise is amazing so I can picture this turning out great.

Wow this is gonna be epic if this Nfs pops off i wouldnt be suprised....
and if they do make a next-gen underground 2 or most wanted, they should call it underground evolution-or NFS UG2 unlimited welcome 2 bayview!
