If you’ve seen any footage of Left 4 Dead 2, Valve’s upcoming sequel to its Game of the Year zombie-fest, then you’re probably more than a little excited to get your hands on it when it’s released in November. That is unless you’ve joined the Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott, a Steam group determined to persuade Valve to make good on its promise to support L4D with free DLC (you know, beyond the free Survival Pack DLC released back in April that included 16 maps, a new Survival Mode, and two new versus campaigns) by offering L4D2 either for free, or at least at a discounted price for L4D owners.
Now before you pass any judgment on the 17,738 people who’ve signed the boycott petition so far, you should probably read the group’s full manifesto first, viewable after the break.
Here it is:
-Valve is a company with financial needs and cannot be expected to survive without the release of new games.
-Judgment cannot be passed on the quality of Left 4 Dead 2 until its release.
-Left 4 Dead was, and is, a quality game which deserves the praise of the entire gaming community.
WE ARE COMMITTED:
-To holding Valve to its promise of free, continual updates to Left 4 Dead in order to build and sustain the community.
-To keeping the Left 4 Dead community together in order to improve the quality of online gaming.
-To supporting the model of continual updates Valve has set forth with its staple products like Team Fortress 2.
WE BELIEVE:
-The release of Left 4 Dead 2 as a stand-alone sequel will split the communities and decrease the quality of multiplayer gaming.
-The announced content of Left 4 Dead 2 does not warrant a stand-alone, full-priced sequel and should instead become updates (free or otherwise) for Left 4 Dead.
-Left 4 Dead has not yet received the support and content which Valve has repeatedly stated will be delivered.
-The release of Left 4 Dead 2 will make Left 4 Dead an obsolete purchase and inferior piece of software after only one year since release.
WE REQUEST:
-That Valve honor its commitment to release ongoing periodic content for Left 4 Dead.
-That Left 4 Dead 2 not be released as a stand-alone, full-priced sequel but as either a free update to Left 4 Dead or an expansion with full compatibility with basic Left 4 Dead owners.
-That Left 4 Dead owners be given discounts for Left 4 Dead 2, should it be released as premium content.
Therefore, we - the members of this Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott - promise to abstain from the purchase of Left 4 Dead 2 until our requests are addressed.

Lame... Really? With so much happening in the world, this is what garners a legalese-laden boycott petition? GTFO!

I'm not getting L4D2 until I beat all the L4D campaigns on expert. But boycotting like this is pathetic.

LOL.. L4D is a fantastic game with great multiplater, but I hope L4D II will add a better single player experience, as wel as build on the great multiplayer.
Il buy it!

Maybe since Valve has been soo good to it's fans , the fans should let this one slide and support their company.

Im going to buy L4D2, it looks like it warrants a stand alone title maybe the multiplayer aspect could be updated in order to share the same community? In other words the disk for L4D1 or L4D2 could take you to the same multiplayer experience...

I've signed the petition/joined the group. The 'New Content' they've delivered is just 2 of the original campaigns updated for Versus mode, which are still buggy and broken; and 'Survival Mode' is nice, but the 15 recycled maps and 1 new map aren't exactly 'content updates' to many people.
I know a fair number of people will disagree, but L4D was a $50 game, and it sucks seeing TF2, a $20 game, getting much more support and content.
2 Campaigns updated for versus and 'Survival Mode' with mostly recycled content does not make for much in the way of 'content updates' it feels like they were doing a half arsed job of finishing the game after release.

When people do things like start Internet petitions, I just stand back and laugh.

L4D wasn't that great. won't buy either.

Yeah. No PS3, why should I bother?

I agree with Cadugan559- it's disingenuous to call the survivor maps "16 new maps". The're pieces of maps. People like us feel the game, while amazing, was lacking in content badly. The game only had 4-8 hours of original content. The only "update" that would have been acceptable would be whole, new, "movie" scenarios. I had great fun playing the game the first time through, only to watch my enthusiasm quickly drain away as I realized how short it was.

Everyone seems to think that this means no more updates for L4D, but think there is still a couple of months till 2 comes out and even at that there is nothing to say they wont continue to release software updates for the original, because if you actually took the time to sit and think about it, they will get new gamers for 2 who will then want to try the original and get all the extra content as well. yeah they could integrate it in as a download for the original, but its all new stuff and new gameplay mechanics, hence it DESERVES a full release.

@ Megamark26
Why do you think it sucks?

I did not sign the petition but wholeheartedly agree with it's supporters. I bought it for both Xbox and PC (in that order) and, with how much I've been anticipating Halflife episode 3, was REALLY disappointed with L4D2...(well, as disappointed I can be with an awesome looking game). It's just not something that is up to the awesome standard of Valve.

Episode 3 is more important.

I'd also like to point out that Valve had already claimed they were going to support L4D in a 'Team Fortress 2' like manner, with new movies, weapons, characters, achievements and so forth.
For Doug or Chet to claim that they're still planning on doing so after already announcing a sequel is fairly ridiculous. It's like asking for a loan when you've defaulted on the last one, a creditor isn't going to give your promises much heed.
I'd like to finish by saying... They claimed to have started working on this, literally, right after L4D released. This doesn't instill much confidence in the team's ability to deliver new content. It makes people feel like their support was pushed to the side in favor of making us pay twice for nearly the same game.

There is no way these guys ain't getting L4D2. If there are a number of people who don't buy it, they'll be missing out quite simply

This. Ever heard of future-proofing, because Harmonix did the same thing with Rock Band 2. Valve isn't going to totally screw its customers out of being able to combine the two games in some way. If these guys want something to bitch at, try petitioning Activision for cannibalizing Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero for a quick buck.

I love Left 4 Dead. My friends and I wasted so many hours on this game. I'm excited for the sequel.
