Analysis: NPD April 2009 Console Sales - Nintendo DSi And Sony PlayStation 2 Flourish

It's time for NPD hardware numbers! After a pretty significant slide in March, April saw a more drastic downturn for most systems. Let's take a look at the numbers and do some dissecting.

  • Nintendo DS - 1,040,000
  • Nintendo Wii - 340,000
  • Xbox 360 - 175,000
  • PlayStation 2 - 172,000
  • PlayStation 3 - 127,000
  • PlayStation Portable - 116,000

Let's stick to the positives first. Nintendo had remarkable success with its various DS consoles. The launch of the DSi combined with the unstoppable power of Pokemon made it an excellent month for Nintendo's handheld systems. I expected the DSi to make a splash, but I'm totally surprised by these results. I didn't think it would do that well. Color me surprised (it's an orange-blue tint).

Sony's PlayStation 2 price cut was effective, much to the chagrin of the numerous doubters reading TheFeed (told you so). The system sold 60,000 more units than in the previous month and it can all be chalked up to the price cut.

Now the bad news starts.

Every other system performed poorly. To be fair, April isn't exactly a huge shopping month. However, these decreases are severe. The Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 sold a bit more  than half of what they did the previous month -- half! The PlayStation Portable also saw significant decline, though it wasn't as sharp a drop as the current-generation home-consoles.

As always, Brian has examined NPD's software sales figures. Be sure to check it out!

Any thoughts on April's sales? Anyone want to tell me again that the PlayStation 2 price cut wasn't significant? Do it! Do it!!!
