While SOCOM fans don't currently have a PS3 singleplayer SOCOM, the next Fireteam game - which will include both singleplayer and multiplayer - is shaping up to be a worthy entry in the series on the PSP. The game, which is currently in pre-alpha, uses a few new features to streamline gameplay and innovate over Fireteam Bravo 2.
Storywise, Bravo will not be receiving orders from HQ anymore. They will be dropped off in a former Soviet republic and tasked with finding and interrogating an individual that has information about threats to the Western world. Once on the ground, however, it's up to Bravo to make decisions with the information available to them.

On the gameplay side, the FTB 3 will utilize a smart lock-on system that will actually adjust when the player is behind cover. For example, if you crouch behind a rock and lock-on to an enemy soldier, your character will raise up just enough to get the barrel of his gun over the cover. This way, you remain as protected as possible, while being able to put fire on the enemy. This is a great implementation as it only requires the player to hold the right shoulder button to lock-on. The less buttons I have to hit on the PSP, the better.
Each mission is portable-sized and will take about 30 minutes to complete. Once completed, a mission can be reloaded and played with a different objective. Doing this helps work toward unlocking all 70+ guns, items, and pieces of equipment. Like previous entries, FTB 3 will include a robust multiplayer game, but the team isn't ready to reveal specifics. They did confirm to me, however, that there will be an infrastructure mode as well as ad-hoc mode.
We'll hear more about SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3 at this year's E3, but the game is already looking great even at pre-alpha.
