The video game rumor of the day is huge, folks: A new PSP is on the way and it will feature a touchscreen as well as other science-fiction style tech. Here's how IGN describes the handheld:

"IGN has learned from several credible sources that the PSP 2 is indeed on the horizon, and will be packing multi-touch technology. According to our sources, the PSP 2 will feature a widescreen multi-touch interface comparable to that of the iPhone for both in-game control and menu navigation. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure any additional details on the alleged new system, but this latest batch of rumors seems to fall in line with other recent claims orbiting the vast recesses of the internet. "

IGN apparently started looking into the matter after internet denizens reported Sony conducting a survey on what features gamers would like to see in a PlayStation Portable 2. Along with the touchscreen, The survey mentioned "Better battery life," "Easy file transfers from the PS3," "an E-comic and book downloading service," and even "A keyboard for easier internet browsing and communication."

Hmm, touchscreen, keyboard and internet... if they added a phone, it would be a little like an iPhone or Blackberry. But still, the PSP is a choice handheld, and a fully upgraded, teched out version would be very nice. I'm probably a geek for admitting this, but I'd really like a book-downloading handheld: Those Kindles are pretty expensive. But is it enough to compete with the Nintendo DS? And would the inclusion of more non-game related features on a handheld really make gamers want to buy one?

Update:  According to game site MCVUk's source, rumors of the PSP 2 are "Nonsense." Here's how they put it.

A source close to Sony has told MCV that: “Clearly, being a quiet time of year, many, what we thought to be credible websites, are making up stories about PSP2, and how it allows you to teleport across the globe, travel through time, and will be powered by the horns of baby rhinoceroses.

“Hopefully, you can sense a mild tone of sarcasm, which should hopefully indicate how ‘on the money’ IGN are. Needless to say, we don't comment on rumour or speculation, but this is nonsense.”

That sounds like a comment to me... Aren't internet rumors wonderful?
