I admit it: When NBC severed ties with iTunes and launched hulu.com, I didn't think it would work out. Who could possibly compete with Apple's video site? Turns out I was wrong, and NBC's video streaming site is looking less like an also-ran and more like an industry leader. As you might expect, CBS wants in on the action, so they've launched their own site at tv.com.
Today, CBS announced non-exclusive partnerships with Endemol USA, Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios Inc., PBS, Showtime, and Sony Pictures Television to expand TV.com’s library of television shows and movies beyond just CBS content. The new additions will add up to a total of 38,000 episodes from 19,000 TV shows available on tv.com.
CBS is aiming to become the most comprehensive video site out there by providing videos and social networking features. Users of tv.com can rate episodes, write reviews and view cast and crew information on the site, with more features sure to come.
If you're an Xbox 360 owner or a PlayStation 3 owner, you can stream both NBC's hulu.com and CBS's tv.com to your TV with PlayOn, a free-to-try application that allows streaming video from both sites, as well as YouTube, ESPN and more. I recommend taking advantage of the simmering video war while it's still going on by watching a lot of TV from the internet!
