Electronic Arts will be consolidating or closing "at least nine" of its studios bringing its total layoff count to 1,000. That includes taking Black Box and merging it with EA's Burnaby, British Columbia studio.
EA said back in October during its restructuring initiatives that it was already planning on laying off 600 employees. But it recently added that some of its major games underperformed in the latter part of this year.
That coupled with the current state of the economy has prompted EA to take further measures to reduce its financial costs and portfolio. I reported previously that EA nixed its plans to open a third studio in Vancouver.
"EA is implementing a plan to narrow its product portfolio to focus on hit games with higher margin opportunities."
