The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued a letter to Nintendo, suspending their application to trademark Wii Remote on grounds that remote is too common of a word for a trademark.
The application was submitted to USPTO in March 2008. Nintendo still has a chance to obtain the trademark, but they would have to "disclaim" possession of the term remote, unless used in Wii Remote.
Someone else in Florida, called Fobis Technologies, owns the rights to Weemote. Nintendo and Fobis previously tried to negotiate a deal, but nothing ever came of that (to possibly trademark Wiimote, unofficial term for the Wii controller).
