In an usual foray into the music world, Capcom recently licensed an album made up of samples from one of its most popular games.

Mega Ran is a hip hop album by Phoenix, Arizona teacher/gamer turned rapper Random made up of samples from the classic NES game character Mega Man. So as part of its celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the character, Capcom approached the MC about re-releasing the previously underground album with their full support and approval.

“It's really unbelievable,” Random told TheFeed exclusively. “I got an email from a Capcom representative when the word started spreading about Mega Ran, and I was immediately scared to death. But they were quick to tell me that they were very supportive of what I was doing…and best of all, that they weren't gonna sue me!"

Available on RAHM Nation Recordings, Mega Ran hit iTunes in 2007 and continues to be its #1 best selling video game/hip-hop/rock compilation. It has been featured in Blender and Wired, and Complex Magazine even called it "one of the most creative releases of the year." Capcom even allowed Random to perform "Mega Ran" songs at this year's Comic Con in San Diego.

“I played these games as a kid a lot, I still do,” Random added. “So to be not only noticed, but embraced and supported by the people who help create and market them is something I would've never imagined. I still think I'm dreaming.”

Random is currently working with Capcom to produce Mega Ran 9, a collection of songs that will utilize the soundtrack of that game as its backdrop. Mega Ran 9 will be released on February 2, 2009 via www.capcom-unity.com as well as www.rahmnation.org. Mega Ran is currently available on iTunes and Amazon.
