Aion, the very stylized, beautiful, and angelic MMO from NCsoft, opened it's public beta testing in Korea this week and has already seen more than 170,000 people join in on the online winged universe, making it the most popular beta in Korean history. Within the first two minutes of the beta going live 11,000 people were logged, and within an hour that number reached 40,000. NCsoft was forced to expand to 25 servers within the first few hours in order to handle the massive influx of traffic, but even after that there were still tens of thousands of people waiting to get in the beta.
“The response we’re seeing in Korea is incredibly exciting,” said David Reid, president of publishing for NCsoft West in Seattle. “Our Aion community in North America and Europe is also rapidly growing. We’ve got aggressive plans for the western launch in 2009”. With this kind of eastern following, gorgeous art direction, action-oriented gameplay, and full on aerial combat, Aion might have the chance to make just as much of a splash in this hemisphere as it did Korea.
