Darren Williams, an executive at SEGA, has called the Nintendo Wii "the most expensive board game on Earth." Ouch.
The full quote, given in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, is:
"I think on one hand the Wii has become the most expensive board game on Earth - it's the kind of thing that families will play at Christmas, and probably won't play again throughout the remainder of the year. So things like Wii Sports, Wii Fit to a certain extent, that's great."
It's an exaggeration, but does fall along a line of thought that has hurt the Wii, especially among the hardcore crowd. There simply aren't enough hardcore games worth purchasing on the console. What was the last Wii game you purchased? Super Smash Bros. Brawl? Boom Blox?
Most of the casual crowd is content to play Wii Sports and Wii Play until the end of time. We know Nintendo has no trouble moving consoles, but will families keep purchasing games a few years down the line?
Do you agree with Darren?
