One of the more intriguing games at this year's Nintendo Media Summit was DS rhythm game Rhythm Heaven--a sequel to popular Japanese game Rhythm Tengoku on the Game Boy Advance. The game play in this title is very simple, but from our brief preview, Rhythm Heaven has that elusive "X-Factor" games strive for: Addictiveness. It's a simple little game that will make gamers say, "Gotta try it one more time."
Rhythm Heaven works like this: Players use the DS stylus to tap and flick in time to music while accompanied by simply-drawn, charming animations. That's it, but it's the kind of game that seems tailored made for having a few spare minutes while riding a bus. Rhythm Heaven will kill those ten minutes.
We tried three of the games six "levels" or mini-games. The first featured a factory, where players flick screws into bolts in time to a song, a level where the object is to "sing" by controlling a character's mouth and keeping time with two other members of a trio, and a mini-game that involved filling robots up with fuel. All of these are drawn in different styles: The factory level features simple, line-drawn 3D, but our favorite was the singing level, which features hand-drawn, expressive black-and-white characters and looked a bit like an artsy cartoon. We like.
Overall, while it's a bit difficult to describe, if you pick up this title, you will not be able to put down your DS. It's that addictive and fun. It will be out in 2009 for the the Nintendo DS.
